Writing bios for Shelter Animals

I once heard never ask someone that has nothing to do as they wouldn't usually help out. Instead ask the busy person as they are likely the type to say "sure I'll do it".

So when I was asked by the SPCA if I could assist with the writeups of the animals at the shelter I didn't hesitate to say yes. The co-ordinator said I had a knack for it as there had been no activity concerning the two foster cats I had in my home since Aug. I wrote an update concerning their amazing personalities which was easy as it was true. The next day the shelter was flooded with calls and as some of you know they were finally adopted!

Then the co-ordinator asked if I could perhaps write about the 5 seniors that were currently at the shelter which were going to be hard to place. After asking opinions from various animal lovers as to what ad would works, most agreed that something coming from the animals perspectives works best.
Much harder this time as I don't know these cats personally. Two especially pull at the heartstrings - two old seniors 12 and 9 whose owner passed and the two sisters ended up at the shelter. I'm praying some kind hearted soul adopts both.

I wasn't really confident about the ad I wrote concering the seniors but the co-ordinator was happy and said placing them yesterday with their bios they did get calls the next day. Soooooo after my long ramble whether she's just telling me this and no one else has stepped up to the job..she asked if I would do it all the time. Me...who has 11 of my own furballs, a gazillion jobs and a household to run..of course said YES!

I'm not surprised they asked you. You are a very talented lady who is also over flowing with compassion for all creatures; 2 footed, 4 pawed/hoofed, winged, etc.

Please feel free to ask for help, that's why we are here.

8) Marianne: Congratulations!(Maybe?) I can see why you where selected because your concern for the animals flows through out your writtings. You are a kind compassionate person and are blessed with the talent of being able to put your passion into words. I feel they have made a great selection and many creatures, that may otherwise not be adopted will because of your writtings. Best of luck with your endevior!
I agree that the writtings that seem like they are from the animal seems to catch peoples hearts. If I can help you out, please let me know.
You do have a knack for it, Marianne. :D It's easy to see why she asked you to write them. I know you're very busy, but I think you'll do a wonderful job with this and help lots of hard to place animals find new homes. :D
Hi Marianne:

I've been reading your stories on this site for some time and I believe that you have the skill to write good ads about each of these animals that will help them get adopted.

I think that people are attracted to stories about each animal that provides an idea of their personality....and if possible, some of their background (such as why they are at the shelter, a bit about their previous life, if possible etc).

When we go to the shelter, I always want to find out a bit more information on the animal than is usually on those little cards that they provide. Yes, it's nice to know the age and if they are spayed or neutered...but do they like being brushed, are they a lap sitter (for cats) or do they prefer to be more independant, how well do they get along with others etc.

Good luck

There is no question about it, you do have knack for writing!!
Marrianne the way you capture an audience with the stories you tell will definitely help these guys out.

Coming from the cats' perspective would be great, because they didn't ask for their owner to die and leave them. They must be wondering where she is, where their daily tuna treats are.

I know our cat Jake (9 3/4)...couldn't survive without his daily milk, he's had since 8 weeks. And Amy (7 3/4), will refuse everything except dry cat food, and she carry's her baby in her mouth (small stuffy). They are definintely set in their ways, but a little info like that would make a transition so much easier.

Find out something about them, and go with that. Good luck.
Marianne,

You are great at writing little stories. If you have the time, oh please do it. :clappurple:
You will be great Marianne :clappurple: :clappurple:
You will do great, your heart is so big for all the fur babies that cross your path. :D Your a natural Kiddo and look forward to seeing what you write.
Hi Everyone!

Apologies it took me so long to respond as I was super busy today..well more so than usual. :D

Thanks for all the warm comments and vote of confidence in me. I actually think I write like I talk, but thankfully don't have spelling errors when speaking..ha ha!

:ghug: Group hug for all!

That's what spell check is for

I have always wished Ron would give us spell check on the forum, my terrible spelling (and typing) has long been an embarressment to me!!

I have tried, and it is too complicated for me to do it well, and make it work for everyone's browser.

But Google has more money than, well, Google has lots of money, and they have incorporated a very nice spell check feature into their toolbar, and I use it all the time!

Go to this page:

and select the "Google Pack", and install all the software, or just the toolbar.
I like the google toolbar too... most toolbars suck and are loaded with spyware and bugs (like yahoo) but the google one hasn't caused me any grief.
So Marianne,

When I read this I thought of your new "job".

This ad ran in the Atlanta Journal:

Single black female seeks male companionship, ethnicity unimportant. I'm a very good looking girl who LOVES to play. I love long walks in the woods, riding in your pickup truck, hunting, camping and fishing trips, cozy winter nights lying by the fire. Candlelight dinners will have me eating out of your hands. I'll be at the front door when you get home from work, wearing only what nature gave me. Call (404) 875-6420 and ask for Daisy, I'll be waiting...

Over 15,000 men called the number which happened to be for the Atlanta Humane Society. Daisy was an 8-week-old black Labrador Retriever.
Hi,

Thanks for that!! Gave me such a chuckle!
