Hot Spots

I've seen this term used numerous times, but don't know what it refers to? Would someone please define it?

Thanks, Stacy.

In grooming Maggie yesterday I noticed a very heavily matted section of her hind foreleg which was discolored from heavy licking. She was just bathed and groomed at the groomers on the 12th, and was groomed by me last Thursday, and was matt free. But I must have missed this area since the hair is thickly matted right next to the skin. Since I have no clippers I'll have to take her to the groomer to have the area shaved. Your link indicates that if ignored the areas could easily become a hot spot. So far though there appears to be no skin irritation.

Well it'll have to wait till tomorrow; groomer is out today with a sick baby.
Here's a picture of a very ugly one that Lucy got.

Ewwwwww.... :twitch:
George, you could cut through the matt, parrallel to the skin and then comb out what is left. The shorter it is, the easier it will be to get through and could give her some relief before the groomer can get to her.
A lidocaine spray, applied afterwords, would give some pain relief but may burn a bit when first applied.
If you are able to cut it off and then comb through it; wash it, dry it (towel dry and a cool dryer or some fanning) and watch for redness and swelling. If the groomer has seen her that recently, the matt shouldn't be that old or bad and the skin should be pretty good underneath. Just make sure it stays dry and no licking! (For everybody!)
I was going to suggest the same thing as Mandy, if you can somehow cut through the matt to allow air to get at the spot that may help prevent an irritation.
Thanks for the encouragement, I tried to work on it yesterday at the end of our long grooming session and she was getting pretty stressed. After reading your posts, we went back to the table and it took me about 15 minutes to get several 1/2 inch mats right next to the skin cut out and numerous little bitty mats combed out. Fortunately the skin was not raw, though did look a bit irritated. After I was finished she gave me a big kiss and got a bit of a hot dog in return. (Some women are so easy to make happy :D

You will be glad you got them out now!!

Sure she wasn't just sniffing and trying to lick that yummy hot dog off your face. Sheepie kisses can have another motive for that wet Slurp. 8)

Glad you got the matt out of her. Hard work EH!!! :P
