Fear and stinks

Weak stomached people...TURN AWAY!!!

I have a question. Yesterday, Keira and Pirate and I were in the
family gettting ready to watch the Bears (go bears!), and Tony came
running down the stair, all macho like, wearing a Bear's Jersey. So some
reason, Keira seemed to panic and was terrifically scared.

Then, all of the sudden we smelled the most obnoxious odor coming
from her! She quickly realized it was only "Dad" and settled down. I
checked her tush, and there wasn't any evidence of a "leak". All seemed
well.

But, question is what the heck was the stink? Does anyone know?
With all the dogs I've had, I've never experienced anything like that.

How odd... what did it smell like?
Ummmmmm, How old is Tony's shirt? Is it one of those "Lucky" shirts?
HA HA...Yep...its very old. I think, in the 70's or 80's there was a player with Tony's last name, so it is his precious Bears shirt.

The stink was terrible! It dissappated quickly...but it was like nothing I had ever smelled before (and hope never to smell it again!)
Actually you may smell a bit of it each time the dog poops. The fluid is passed with each bowel movement. It probably serves to help the dog mark his territory. Also they can be squeezed when frightened, especially with strange creatures come wearing uniforms or miniature horses dance inside a box.

Dogs who don't pass the fluid easily.......well, not THIS easily (are you use the dog isn't a skunk in sheepie clothing??)......are the ones who end up with impacted glands.

Which is worse, free flowing or impacted................. :?
When Murphy gets startled or scared, a fishy odor comes from his bum.. the same kind of odor there is when the glands are expressed...

The only time I have smelled it is when he is really, really scared.. or get his butt squeezed....
Yea, Brenda...it was a very gross fishy odor. UGH!

I wonder why "Dad" scared her so much? She just loves her daddy!!!!

Hmm...maybe she's a Saints fan and just never told us!

Yea! Keira is a COLTS fan!!!

:high5:
Now...don't turn my words around!!! I said, maybe she's a Saints fan, not a Colts fan!!

Geezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.... :?
I have smelled this twice from Simon, my basset.
It IS the stuff like comes from the anal glands. He had a small smear of dk green slimely stuff around his rectum each time. I washed it off and it fixed the problem. Both occurances were after a emotional stress incident.
Definitely sounds like anal gland smell to me. Fozzie does this a lot and especially when Annie has frightened him with her snap. We have been contemplating removal, but will wait to find out how long the vet technician's "squeeze" holds us. It smells AWFUL!
All of our OES have done this at one time or another. Smells like a cross between air escaping from an old inner tube and dead fish. When it happens here we say "Ugh! Nelsons' fished!"
Thankfully weve never had the "stink" part of this problem, but my girl, Abby, is VERY sensitive to and upset by, certain types of clothes! We have formed a list over the years of Abby's personal fashion "donts"...long black coats, large floppy hats, feather boas, wigs of any sort, sunglasses, dreadlocks...I have a friend who refers to her as my "Working dog for the fashion police"
How do these dogs get so crazy??!!!
I don't know about Kiera, but in Abby's case, she was a rescue who spent the first 5 years of her life in an airline kennel (24-7, except for going out to pee & poop) and as a result just had very little experience with new and different things...Weve had her for 3 years now and have exposed her to as many new people and experiences as possible, but, although she's quite calm about most things now, a lot of odd little things still throw her. Her quirks make her all the more lovable to us though! :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:
Keira was a rescue. But, we got her when she was very young...5 months. Whoever had her, said they couldn't take care of her, and turned her in.

Over the last couple years, we see little ghost popping up for her. Tony once lifted his foot, to block the dogs from the front door, and Keira, literally threw herself back, as if...not to be kicked.

She doesn't like a lot of things (other than home and family), but we try to get her to experience and hopefully get used to stuff, like going to the coffee shop.

But...she should, and does know Tony...maybe his exaggerated walk, or whatever goofy thing he was doing, struck a nerve with her.
I dont think there is ever a way to know for sure why some dogs are upset by some (occasionally really odd) things. Our old boy Spenser (who we lost sadly this past august) Was also a rescue, but in his case out and out abuse and a truly horrible living condition should have (it seemed to us) left him timid and fearful, but instead, he was absolutely unflappable!! The only things that EVER bothered him were fireworks and carnival rides...(two things oddly enough, that dont bother Abby at all!) He honestly NEVER seemed to meet a person he didn't like and greeted every new experience with enthusiasm. ... I'd better stop now, as I'm starting to tear up!!!
gosh...I know you miss him. Been there, done that...still recovering after almost 3 years...

But...carnival rides? You take your pups on CARNIVAL RIDES????????

I guess that did sound pretty strange!!! I'm a artist, and make my living primarily through doing shows and fairs...my dogs come with us to fairs whenever the rules allow for it, and a couple of these have carnival rides...At the State Fair Spence refused to go out into the field where we gave them potty-breaks if the rides were going
I agree with what everyone else is saying about that this is an anal gland reaction.

Some dogs actually musk and it doesn't take anything to set them off. It does stink something terrible. One breed that musks is beagles. My best friend has two beagles, both female and at certain times of the day one of the dogs is prone to let out some stink. We did some reading and found out that this is a common phenomenon with the breed. I think that this is isolated to female dogs. My mom's beagle was male and he never once musked.
I agree with y'all. I just hope, when Tony puts on his jersey for da SUPERBOWL (go Bears!), she doesn't "musk" with a houseful of guest!!!!
