Chum swimming update

I can't even believe what a difference it is making! Chum has been going twice a week. She has worked her endurance up from 3 sets of 1 minute each to two sets of five minutes and 1 set of three minutes. According to the therapist, this is rapid progress. The dog before Chum today has been going for weeks but he can only go for one minute before he needs a break. Her movement in the pool is getting really steady and even and she really extends her front legs and motors with her hind legs.

Compare a video of her first day: http://picasaweb.google.com/vyates/Chum ... 6654747506

To a video taken today:

It is a good workout:

But the greatest thing is that her mood is great -- really positive. She loves to go and her good mood carries over for the rest of the week. She wants to walk more often and longer distances, greet more people, bark more, etc. She is so enlivened by it. I can't believe the transformation it is making in her quality of life.

Keep up the good work Chummie! :cheer:
That's awesome, I'm so happy to hear how well Chummie is doing :)
She really does look comfortable in there! So relaxed with it now :)
That is so great Val. What a treasure you have in Chummie. We are all cheering her on. GO CHUMMIE GO! :cheer:
She looks much more relaxed than she did in the first video where she looked a little panicked to me. 8O

That's just wonderful.

What motivates her to keep swimming? Is she swimming towards the ramp? How much of a tug is she putting on that lead?
Absolutely amazing is chum. Such a difference from when she first went to now, it really is wonderful and the therapy sounds like it is paying off big time for chum even in her personality and how she is doing.

WOO HOO GO CHUM, keep that dog paddling going. :cheer:

Pssst chummie if I lived closer I would be the first to line up and pat and cuddle you  :ghug:

GO GIRL GO
8) Val Chummie really looks like she is enjoying herself. How wonderful. It is great that the therapy has made her more mobile. That is great news. Keep up the good work Chum!
AWEEEEEEEEEE Chummie!!!!!!!!!!!! What a PRO she has become!!!!!! Tasker says she's as sexy as she EVER was and WOOHOO, Chummie in a bathing suit!!!

Val I'm so glad it seems to help.
Wow - how great for Chummie! She looks like she's having a blast!
Exercise is great for the mind and body for both animals and humans. Our pool is down for repairs and boy am I getting crabby

Chummie, I'm glad this is working for you.
How wonderful! She sure seems to be enjoying herself. It's amazing what a little exercise can do! I suppose I should get on the treadmill...
you can really see an improvement in her from the first time.. like ron says.. she doesn' have that look in her eyes anymore.

Soon she will be able to swim the english channel..

You go girl!!!!

I agree she looks scared in the first one but I wouldn't go so far as panicked. She seemed to want to keep her eye on people. Now she just kinda motors along without needing to keep eye contact. I am not really sure what motivates her. I think she might like being able to fully extend her front legs. And she really kicks with her back legs, which to me suggests alot of pent of energy that she finally can release without pain. The therapist says Chum's back legs are really fast compared to other dogs. She says usually for beginner swimmers, the back legs are slow and the front legs fast and the dog struggles to get out but Chum is the opposite -- the front legs are full slow strokes and her back legs go very fast. Interestingly, her front and back legs are not synchronized, which I also see in her crazy walking gait.

The tug is firm but you can hold her back with one hand. It doesn't feel like she is trying to get anywhere -- just that she is in steady motion, like on a treadmill.

She is facing the ramp but it isn't like she goes right to it when she is released for break. She just goes to the shallow end and stands and pants happily. After the third set, she heads right for the ramp. I don't know if that is just training or whether she is worn out and ready to get out.
The smile on her face in the still picture says it all! :yay: She loves to swim, bless her soul!! All she knows is that she's having fun, and loving it!! :hearts:
Chummie is an inspiration! Gotta love that drive and determination!

She is so adorable...
Wow. She is amazing Val.

Just add some bubble bath to that water and she can stir up some big bubbles with all that paddling ...LOL

Keep up the great work chummie! :clappurple: :clappurple:

What a great improvement she's made. She really looks much more calm and happy in the latest video. She seems to be enjoying herself. The picture of her resting on the ramp with that huge smile on her face says it all. :D

This is absolutely fabulous news!! :D
Wow, what a huge difference. She's trying to leap out in the first video. I still say she has a "why the heck do I have to keep doing this look" in the second video, but that could be because she's working hard to keep going. Still very impressive. I told Mr J how cool I thought it was that you did so much for your doggies!
Chum looks good. :D
Is the water just plain water, or have chemicals in it like a pool or hot tub?
I was wondering if that was affecting her skin and coat. At the very least it's a lot of hair drying!

Chewie's mom is doing water therapy also - as a rehab from a spinal cord injury. She is doing well too!
It is so great that Chummie's energy is up and she is getting more exercise....pretty soon she will be ready for bikini season :D
