Getting an old dog used to a new crate

My parents are rescueing Lucky in AZ.

Right now they are not sure if he was ever crated while his owners were out of the house...but to ensure his safety they want to crate him (at least for the first few months). I was wondering if anyone had tips about getting an "older" dog used to a crate. Also, where is the best place for the crate? Maybe in a spot that they frequently are when home...so he is used to hanging out in the room?

Thanks for any tips you guys can give.

P.S. Izzie is very excited about having an "uncle"

He is a beautiful boy.. congrats to your parents...
No tips from me, but congrats to your parents! Lucky looks like a sweetie.
Awww, handsome happy looking boy! :)

Congrats to your parents :)

As far as crating an older dog goes, I think it depends on the dog. I would suggest leaving it open and putting a treat in it, then praising him for going in to get it. Then after a few times slowly close the door but don't lock it, and treats and praise again. Then maybe close it totally, and as long as he stays fairly calm, praise ,treat and then let him out etc... just baby steps....
Willowsprite had a great suggestion to work on introducing Lucky to the crate gradually.

Next step when Lucky is comfortable in the crate when people are in the same room, is to leave the room for a couple minutes and gradually work that up to an hour or more. Then try leaving the house for a couple minutes and gradually work that up too.
I'm of zero help with this issue, but I just wanted to congratulate your family on the newest member of your pack! He looks like a beauty! :D
