HI all! This question does not pertain to sheepdogs but I hope you all will help anyway. My sister and brother in law are looking to adopt a smaller indoor puppy and I have been looking for them. I found Dachsund puppies on pet finder in my area and contacted the person via email. She sent me a letter back stating the terms a conditions of the adoption. She wrote me and said that she had gotten the mother and puppies from a puppymill auction because she believes she can break the puppy mill cycle by taking the mother out of the situation therefore reducing the number of dogs being breed. This is were my question comes in, she says she paid 1,100 dollars for the mother and 3 puppies. After that she she has had them spade or netured and all shots caught up which cost about $150.00 a pup. She is asking $400.00 dollars for each puppy saying she is not making any money off this but is trying to cover the cost of rescueing these puppies. Does this sound right. They need to have their info in by tonight and she will make her choice on Monday of who gets the pups. She also said she may have more puppies avalible in the fall and wanted to know if we did not get one of these would they be interested in puppies in the fall if she gets some. So what do you think is this normal. Something just does not sound right to me. What do you all Think? Thanks |

There is a nwe phenomenon of people selling puppies on petfinder.
Don't know if this is the case, but...... |
NO! Avoid these types of people! Many times these people are in the business of what they refer to as "rescue" to make a buck! They are no better than the puppy mills! By her giving $1100 to a puppy mill - she's not solving anything - that's not going to end puppy mills - they use that money to purchase more breeding stock. Dachsunds have a lot of health issues to begin with - never mind puppy mill products - who probably were too sick to sell through their regular means and that's why they're going through as "rescues".
These people are no better than the mills as far as I'm concerned. There are often puppy mill brokers (the middle men) used by mills to do exactly as you described. Unfortunately, these people have started to infiltrate petfinder in securing homes for these dogs.
Be careful!

Itradan,
Here's an article I had posted under a different subject - about a person (like you described) who is selling puppy mill dogs that she "saved".

It's appalling!

| I would have to question the fact that she said she will have more puppies available at a later date? Didn't she say she got them neutered and spayed? It sounds like she plans on continuing to breed them. |
| Intradan, I would suggest if a person is going to pay 400.00 anyway, why not find a truly reputable breeder? Or, adopt from a shelter maybe. This situation doesn't sound right to me either. |
