Dog Mardi Gras Costumes? Need Ideas

CAWS (Capital Area Animal Welfare - Local Rescue Group) that took our Christmas photos contacted me and would like me to participate with my trio since they are all rescues and since OES are rare in LA, in the Mardi Gras parade Krewe of Mutts. Info is below:

Throw me something Mister, a bone that is! That's right, its time for Mardi Gras so grab your pooch and start thinking of a cool costume for you and your four legged family member.

8th Annual CAAWS Mystic Krewe of Mutts Mardi Gras Dog Parade

Sunday, February 11th
Parade rolls at 1PM
Theme is Pawrates of the Carribean - Barkin for Bones and Treasure

So I need cheap costume ideas for me and three sheepies - any one have an idea? My son volunteered to pull the wagon (somehow we have to turn it into a pirates ship) filled with beads to throw.

I wish some of you creative people lived closer to me so I could get some help. Put on your thinking caps and give me some ideas. Please?

This is the link to photos of the parade from last year:

Our local Target has some cheap pirate stuff for kids in the $1 area by the front door. The pirate vests are too small, but there are some hats and plastic swords, if you can figure how to incoporate them into the costumes.

Good luck and remember the cameras.
How exciting!
Kids Party shops sell a lot of stuff cheap, they should carry Pirate stuff like cardboard pirate hats etc.

Party Masks as well from a party shop. You can make them fit by just cutting a piece of hat elastic to fit around there boof heads to hold the mask on. OR they also sell the Eye patches as well in cardboard, again you will have to alter that with the elastic to fit around the head.

The rest, a toy shop, for plastic swords etc. and even get a stuffie parrot too, what pirate can resist a parrot on there shoulders. Or in doggies pirate cases, sitting on their back. Put a belt around one sheepies waist, attach the stuffed parrot to that, looks like hubby might loose a belt all for a good cause, raid his closet too for an old vest of some type if he has one, poor hubby  . 8)

Oh and on the wagon, definately a small pole with a flag of the Skull and Crossbones on it, not a pirate ship without that. You can get some cheap black material and use some white paint to paint that on rather then buying an actual flag.

Sounds like so much fun, Hey Photos of the crew too when they parade on the day.

Ahoy mateys! Not sure how well you can see it, but Bailey has on a collar with bones on it. For s sheepie the collar needs to be much bigger - could hardly see it under his fur! But you could make big collars out of black felt then cut skull and crossbones out of white felt and glue them on. That would be quick and inexpensive.

The hat was cute but Bailey hated it and kept taking it off! And then of course, you'll have to have Pirate beads!
Since the 2nd movie was just released on DVD before Christmas, there should be tons of kids costume stuff available for that theme at places like Toys R Us, Target, Walmart, etc.

Good luck! & Have FUN!! :D
It just sounds like so much fun!!!!
Hi Wynette,

Merlin,Panda and Blue all got Skull and Crossbone bandanas in their stockings this year. I can see if the "Loonie store" have any left. (yup that's right we Canadians have Loonie stores while you have Dollar stores)

If the store no longer has any in stock, they are willing to lend you theirs via snail mail. Just let me know. Would that help?

Marianne and the boys
Marianne,

Thanks for the offer. One of Joe's friends came up with the idea of a theme "Diving For Treasure". I found child's size diving masks and snorkels for them to wear. A fellow freecylcer is giving me a child's wagon that we can decorate to look like a treasure chest and put the beads and doggie treats and water inside it.

It's going to be so much fun. I can't wait.
Hi Wynette,

Hey that's creative!!! Love the idea and please take photos to share with all of us at the forum!

Marianne and the boys
Wynette, that's a really cute idea! Can't wait to see pictures. What are you going to wear?
Sue, did Bailey dive for the candy in the Halloween pic?????? (I could eat a few Almond Joys right now).
