Obedience and agility are open to all puppies!

This thread has become a soap opera! Wait, let me get my popcorn...

I've sought of said all I feel I need to except..as far as showing mentioned in a prior post, anyone can show their dog, as long as its a purebred, in obedience trials and agility. You can get a title on your dog from the AKC even if it isn't "show quality". The term "pet quality" insinuates you are getting an inferior pup. which is NOT true at all! Your pup can be pefectly adorable and perfectly healthy, but maybe the bite is off or the head too pointy, etc. So what?

Dogs love obedience training and its a great way to bond owner and dog. No one is here saying pet quality dogs are not worth having and are not worth spending lots of money on, if necessary. It's just that most of the reputable breeders do show conformation and in conformation you need to have as "perfect" to standard as possible. And in that process to get the closest to standard, they expend lots of money breeding only stock that is of standard - healthwise and "looks". That's the difference of getting a pup through reputable show people.

Does that mean a pup from that litter will not get sick? Of course not, but because of the testing done, because of the requirements of the AKC and OES club for breeding, you cut your odds to having a pup whose prone to HD, deafness, etc.

Anyway, obedience trials are great fun and a great way to compete - even if your pup is "pet quality". I got a CD title on my first OES and did pet therapy and he was not show quality. We had a great time in those activities!

Well, sick of popcorn...since its Friday night, maybe its Happy Hour time now
