Looking to adopt in Michigan . Can anyone help me out ?

Hello,
I am looking to rescue an OES in Michigan, but this is proving to be a bit harder than I had hoped. Finding a rescue close is not so easy.
I have called a few places and am waiting to hear back but thought I would try this place also.

I have three kids, and I have other pets. I just lost my best friend(my rescue Great Dane) on 12/29 of Heart Failure. She would have been 11 on 2/14, and she would have been with us for 6 yrs on 2/18.

I am located in lower Michigan, ok the very bottom ! LOL ! I am only about 15 minutes from the Ohio border.

If you can give me any help in my quest that would be nice.

I am in no hurry, just exploring all the options before I am ready.

Thank you for your help, Traci

Welcome to the forum! You're doing all of the right things!

There are rescue contacts listed on this site at
http://www.oes.org/html/oes_rescue.shtml

As you seem to be aware, a little bit of patience will be required. First you'll get in touch with the various rescues and fill out their adoption request paperwork, and then they'll put you on the list. When a dog comes along whose requirements are met by your situation, you'll get that magical phone call!

A call every now and then to show your continued interest couldn't hurt, and perhaps becoming a foster parent may help to find you just the right bundle of energy for which you're looking.

Thanks for posting! Be sure to register here and keep us posted during your search and then after, I'm sure you'll have lots of things to say and ask about your new sheepdog.
If you don't have cats, please consider Steve, shown here on Petfinder.com:
http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/dis ... id=7412132

He's just a few hours away. :-)

Hi,
Thank you both.
Taking it slow is so not a problem . After just losing our old girl I am just not ready to jump in so fast, I want to take my time and find a OES that is just right for us.

Sadly I can't get Steve as we have one cat. I feel so bad for that boy, just goes to show how horrible some people are. Sad so Sad !!!

R4on thank you for the link I will be heading there as soon as I finish this post.
Thank you both again.
Hugs, Traci
Thank you Ron.
I have contacted a few people off that list and am just waiting for a couple of them to get back to me with help.
I will wait and if anyone hears of a OES that needs help in lower Michigan or upper Ohio, maybe I can help. At this point I will just wait for the people I have emailed to get back with me.
Thank you all again.
Hugs, Traci
Hi,

Just wanted to say welcome to the forum and good luck with your search.

I'm sorry about the loss of your furkid recently, we can all relate. Perhaps in time when you have a OES in your home you'll be back with us and tell about about your GD in the memorial section.

Marianne and the boys
Just wanted to say not to give up hope. I am in Louisiana and was fostering a 7 mth old female sheepie - her furever home is now in Brighton, MI. Betsy in Alabama is fostering a male sheepie and his furever home is going to be in Michigan.

Would recommend you join the forum and ask one of the other forum members here that live in MI over to your home and ask them to do a home check/visit. That way if you find a rescued sheepie that would fit in with your home - the home check portion of the application process is already completed.

Good luck in your search of your new family member.

Thank you again !
I was wondering about something. Should I apply at a rescue ? If yes do you know which one ??
I wanted to say how nice it is to be here and getting some help from people that are so nice and helpful !!!!
Thank you again, Traci
Madeline Erickson runs New York Stae OES Rescue, but she helps cover Ohio and places dogs all over the state. You should definitely contact her at waynenik@aol.com.

You should also contact the rescue people in Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin (look at the NEOESR site for contact info). I've heard that area is being deluged with rescue dogs now. I'm not sure why.

Good luck!

:D
Where are you in Michigan-- what city I mean? I'd be glad to do the home check if you'll need it. I just did the one for Duke who will be going to Michigan soon and I'm happy to help. I've already filled my own house up with dogs so now I just like to help other people get them!

I was just looking at Petfinder and here's one in Bellevue, MI. No picture but may be worth checking out.

:D Welcome Traci! I know you will find the right sheepie person to join your family. Best wishes! :ghug:
Hi Traci,
Welcome to one of the greatest places on the web. I am so sorry for you lost of your beloved Dane. I can relate to you so much it hurts.

I have always had Great Danes in my life till now. I could not take the heart ache of the loss of a pet that has such a short life span. My boy Apollo who we called BOO died of bloat at 6 years old last year.

I Had such a good set up for my Danes that I thought it could never happen to one of mine. But it did.

My husband built a kennel attached to our old house with separated stalls so the dogs would eat apart from each other calmly and off of high tables then they could lay down and rest for at least 45 min before they came back in the house with us. (You can see in the picture the room we built)

I always limited activity before and after meals in this room, and feed one of the best foods money could buy.

Well, it happened to me. I never thought my heart would heal.Boo was my boy,and he suffered so bad till the Dr. put him to sleep.

My husband and I had taken in Danes that for what ever reason no one wanted ,and we would find them forever homes or keep them till there time came.

Mr. in this picture was dog aggressive so he was given up. He now lives in W.P.B FL.with a great family that we found for him .He will be 7 years old soon.
I can only find pictures of Mr. in my computer right now.

I like you did a lot a research into other breads and found that I fell in love with OES fast.
The fun and playfulness and clown like personality is so much like a Great Dane. :hearts:

They are Great . I know that every breed has its own health issues but to find a breed like OES that is so similar to a Danes personality, I had to have one, and I thank God I did.
I love my Boy Harley so much,he could never replace Boo but he sure has filled that empty hole in my heart. :hearts: :hearts:

I wish you the best luck, and I hope you have the same heart filling experience with a OES as I did.... :hearts:

P.S ..Sorry for the book...LOL... :phew:

Antoinette
Traci,

Good luck on your search for an OES Welcome!! This is a very nice forum. I agree with Wynette get approved by one rescue and it will make it easier if a dog comes up. Have your vet references and personel references done. (I love danes too!!!)
Welcome :D I hope you find that very special sheepie that is suited perfectly for you :hearts:
:D Welcome to a fellow Michigander! This forum is wonderful- you will be able to glean a ton of information here. All the members are very helpful to each other and everyone has a story to share with you. Good Luck in your search for a Sheepie.

Thank you all so much, you have made me feel very welcome here.
Antoinette,
Thank you, I am so glad there is another person here that has had a Dane and could tell me how you feel about this breed, not that anyone else means any less just knowing how you feel makes me feel like I am doing the right thing.
I'm so sorry about your Boo, this has been the hardest thing my family and myself have gone through.

Thank you to everyone that has wished me luck. I know it will take a while but that is ok. I don't want to rush this, I want to find the best match for us.

Bill's mom not only a fellow Michigander, but we are only about 30 mintues away for each other.
I know someone asked a bit back where I lived but I forgot to post it, I'm sorry. Any way I live in Jonesville, Michigan.
Again thank you all for everything.
Hugs, Traci
Rosie went to live with a furever family in Brighton, MI so that shouldn't be to far away from ya'll and my oldest son lives in Dundee, MI.
Thank you . That does give me hope that I can find a baby outside of Michigan if I have to.
I talked to the rescue with Trevor, even though I would like a girl I'm being open minded to any one that might work out at our home.
I reallt liked the sound of Trevor, and the rescue asked for my references and said they would email me pictures last night. So I sent out my peoples names and number's and waited for the pictures, when I went to bed last night after 10pm I checked just before I got in bed for the pictures I just figured they got bussy and didn't get time to send them yet. I checked again this morning, nothing. Then when I got home this after noon there was an email, this is the email.

Would you like to come and see him tonight? We have a lot of people interested in him. However I think he may do better in your home. He really enjoys children. The other homes do not have children. Let us know as soon as you can.

Best Regards,

I called him and explained my husband works and I couldn't make it tonight, so he says ok tomorrow then. I told him tomorrow would not work as my husband has to sleep and this place is about 1hr and 30 minutes so it would be 3 hrs just to get there and home(I can't go that far alone I am bad with driving far away from home). So I said Friday would be best. He told me how there a so many people wanting him and he thought I would be best. I called the people I gave the names of he never checked with anyone, but is saying I am the best home. I only spoke with him last night about 15 minutes.
How does he know I will be the best home ? He didn't ask me hardly anything.
I told him that I would get back with him Friday.
What should I do ? I feel like I am being pushed !
He said that Trevor is good with other dogs, cats, & kids. He has basic manner's, and good on a leash. The petfinder thing says housetrained, UTD, and fixed.
Hugs, Traci
I'd definitely go check him out. The guy may just be overrun with dogs right now so perhaps he's being a bit pushy out of the stress of worrying about placing all of them. Or if something's weird, going and visiting will tell you a lot. I know OES in shelters do get tons of applications and they don't have the same filter processes that rescues have so sometimes they go quickly-- but not to the best home.

What did he tell you about Trevor? Anything about his personality?

He really didn't just said I could send him my refrences and he would get me a picture. I asked him questions and he answered me and that was about it.
His website is great, and they seem like a good rescue. I would love to go see him Friday when I can but I don't want to feel like I am being shoved into doing if fast. I felt kinda like I either come now or I don't have a chance.
If he is there Friday I would love to go.
Hugs, Traci
It is possible that the references will only be checked "after" you meet Trevor and if you decide you are interested. That is a bit backwards, but different rescues do it differently.

There should be a home visit done, also.

It is not usual for a rescue dog to be placed with kids, so I can understand that when a dog who is good with kids is available, the rescue would want to place one in that kind of home.
I'm sorry I hope everyone doesn't think I am being judgmental about this place. I was just worried about the fact that he didn't ask me anything about me, my family,or what other pets I have. I take that back he did ask what age my youngest kid was.
That is why I thought that maybe he just asks the people you give him.
I just don't understand why other than we have kids why we will be the perfect family for this dog.
I am not saying he is bad, I just wanted to know what you all thought.
Plus the fact I felt like he was saying I had to come or loss the chanse for this dog. I felt very pushed, almost guilted .
I know this could just be the way I feel not really what was being done.
I have had a rescue that was bad when I got my Dane and don't want this again. I want to find a good one.
I for one know from personal experience that not all rescue's are good, some just make money(even invetigated by the attorney general for wrong doing) I just don't want that again.
I have already been told by one rescue lady I should lie and say I didn't have kids or other pets.
I DON'T want to do that, how can they place the best baby for us with us if I lie ?!?!?!
Thanks for listening to me ramble.
Hugs, Traci

Are you kidding me, Traci? I LOVE you and that you are thinking all this through! :high5:

I wish people would think half this much when getting a puppy!

You are right on all counts. There are good rescues and there are bad rescues. I don't know this one at all, but the site looks good. That can mean nothing, though, as there are suspect rescue groups with wonderful websites and stories to rope people in, but behind the scenes they are doing more harm than good and are more like "puppy brokers"...

Maybe there is someone on this forum who is familiar with that group, and can vouch for it. I found Trevor and his rescue group easy enough, so maybe if you post the link someone can PM you with their experiences...

I LOVE it! :clappurple:
I dunno.... a line about WANTING to send a rescue dog to a home with kids... that just doesn't sit right with me. Usually, at least with OES breed specific rescues they are very concerned about sending a dog home to a household with children.

Perhaps they ARE overrun with dogs... that's really not a good reason to send out a rescue so quickly and to less-than-ideal circumstances. They also don't seem to mention an adoption fee or donation on their site.

I would be very skeptical at this point, just like you. Continue to proceed with caution.

Thank you Nicole,
That does make me feel a bit better about feeling so judgemental about this rescue.
I just want to do this right for me, my family and our future new baby. I want to make sure that this will work out for everyone involved.
I have meet my fair share of rescues that seemed more like puppy brokers too. Sadly that seems to happen alot.

Not saying this place is, just saying I want to make sure I don't get caught up in that again(I'm a big sucker). This could be an awesome rescue that just does things differently than other's do.

Ron, the only thing that I can think of is my kids are a bit older. My youngest is 8 .
It was just the fact he never asked about our lives.
Not if I have a fenced yard, not how many other pets we had, nothing about my vet. That just didn't set well with me.
But like someone else said maybe he waits till you meet the dog. But what if we go meet him and we are not such good people after all, what if nothing checks out isn't that a waste of both of our time ?

I'm just stressing about everything too much, I think.

Thank you guys for the help you are all giving me.
Hugs, Traci
This gentleman's lack of questions is a BIG cause for concern. Don't let him pressure you into anything. If you feel uncomfortable with the situation, another rescue dog will come along. From the next Rescue you may get such a 'grilling' that you think they're wacky  but they're just interested in what's best for the dog as well as your family.

Another thing that no one has mentioned is never go to an unfamiliar destination alone (I know you said your husband was going with you, just happened to think of this). Most times when we make a transfer for Rescue it's in a very public place. One time we picked up an OES from the home of a couple in the middle of a divorce. It was a scary, volatile situation and I was glad to have "back-up".
I wonder if Trever got adopted. I can't find him on the petfinder page, and I e-mailed about him as well (when the page was up), but never got a response. So here's hoping for the best that he found a good home, and best of luck to Traci in finding the perfect rescue dog.
Hi, Traci, I am sorry I am late reading this thread, but I have to add I would be skeptical also and you have every right to be concerned. We rescued our Sadie from a rescue (not pound)! There definitely are good and bad ones.

Also, I can tell you there is an excellent OES Rescue in Bloomington, MN - would that distance even be a possibility for you? If so, I would be happy to email you info.
