Well, i asked the same question when we picked up our little girl just over a week ago! You would need a container of water, some doggie wipes, because he will probably pee pee all over the crate and himself, a colar and leash, before you bring him into the car let him do his business. I was too neurotic to just let my baby be free to dart off if she got scared. Also, a blanket for the car ride, so that if he doesn't go, and decides to go in the car you can have something you can just take off and wash. Hmmmm what else..... I took a chewy toy, but she was to upset to do anything but curle up in my lap. Make sure that you have your driver's licence because the airline will check it before they give you the pup. And the pick up area for the animals is in a different location from the general cargo arrival. So check into that also. Goodluck!
Also if your pup is from out of the country (mine is from Canada) you have to go through customs you might want to check that just in case. Also there was a small terminal fee that i didn't know about till I picked her up. You might want to call the airlines cargo dept and ask how much if any and if they take check cash or credit. I don't think the one that we used took credit.
Maybe some tissue too. I was so happy when i got bella that i cried
:P thank you very much i have my camera ready and all the other items for the big day i want to take as many pictures i think i will cry
You must be getting so excited!
Cher, where in Canada is your pup from?
:P i am so happy i can't wait for my little COSMO
Cosmo! That's a cute name! :)
Hi Willowsprite! Bella came from Saskatchewan. I was very lucky she was the last female left but she is everything i could have wanted and more. :D She just fits right in like she was picked just for us!!!
I love the name Cosmo, it seems to fit a sheepie too! Ask the breeder if she can put a little blanket in with the puppies so when he flies and comes home to you, he can feel more relaxed with the blanket that smells like his brothers and sisters. We are excited to here more about Cosmo!
Cher and Willow, are Dancer and Bella related?
Stormi and co.
Congrats on Cosmo. That name is awesome. I hope Cosmo has a wonderful personality to go with the name.
I think i jinxed Bellatrix when I named her after a Death Eater from Harry Potter. She can be a viscious (sp) little bugger. (just like her mother  )

Stormi, I don't think they are related. Not sure tho.
I can guarantee you they ARE related, in fact I would bet every sheepie in North America is related.
I'm actually currently doing a study on OES genetics. The gene pool is extremely small. If something isn't done they could even become close to extinct as a purebred dog.
I'm betting that if you get a copy of any dog here's pedigree, I can link them all together.
That is very interesting Willow. I have been doing Ragdoll genetics. This has been a lot fun to me. It is so neat how the colors work and patterns. I am learning new things all the time. I also figured Ragdolls would breed color the same as any pointed cat, but they don't. I would love to hear about your study on OES genetics.
I have a question for you that I haven't found out. Jack and Annabelle both have brown eyes, but lets say that on both sides the mom's had blue eyes and both dad's have brown eyes. Can the recessive gene for blue come out in Jack and Annabelle's puppies or since both of them have brown eyes will all puppies produces have brown eyes? Am I making sense? I can't answer that question anywhere. Stormi and co.
Yes they most definitely have a chance of having pups with blue eyes. In fact, most OES carry the gene for blue eyes, though for most it is recessive. Brown is always dominant, even if both parents have blue eyes, some pups will still have brown.
If you need any help with info on ragdoll genetics I can help you out... I did a paper on siamese genetics when I was getting my animal sciences degree. As for the color patterns, it works almost the same.
Anyway, feel free to email me if you want! :)

Stormi, as well as any other cat lovers... there is another forum I go to, TheCatSite, it is, I think, the largest online community for cat lovers. They often have vets post as well, and there are sections for breeders, pet lovers, rescue people, stray and feral caregivers, all the usual stuff, but also a section on genetics.

Oh, I love that site also! I have two kittens and I check it out often!
Thanks again, Willow. I will have to check that out. I am on a forum similar to that for Ragdoll cats. It is mainly cat people, and a few breeders. Stormi
 he finally here he is cute i will have pictures soon thanks for all the suggestions
I have been reading all the posts...not quite surer how to do this but am trying...my ABBIE is 4 weeks old and in Arkansas..I'm in WAshington...thanks for info on what to take to airport..I'm a little nervous .. it will be my first big dog..I researched the breeds and kept coming back to oes..took me months to take the plunge and now here I am...nervous as can be.......will it be hard to train her? potty train? I also have a shiht tzu here...oh my gosh and a handicapped son...what am I getting into? I'm so excited ..love her already and can hardly wait to get my hands on her...I've been buying toys...collars etc. ANY advice will be much appreciated......thank you
You've already started on the best advice we can give you- read, read, read, talk, talk, talk. Read all the posts, get info from the various online breed clubs, and breed specific books. Ask questions- of us, your breeder, your vet other sheepipe people you might meet in person. Finally, take a deep breath, relax and enjoy your new addition!

Karen :)
I want to say that this is the best place to visit...I love your forum!! Thank you for having this place for us newbies to go and learn about our babies...my new little one will be coming home January 21st and I'm so excited..nervous etc etc...I have been reading..reading..reading..I have had enough dogs but never a large breed so this will be new territory for me. I have looked into the breeds and been stuck on Sheepies since spring and looking....finally took the plunge and keeping my fingers crossed she will be OK..I have many questions...one in particular..she will be little over 8 weeks when I get her...do I start right out taking her outdoors to potty? I'm in Washington state and its cold and snowy..I would prefer to do that rather then paper but does anyone have advise on how to start? Do I put paper or doggie pads as well? I plan on crate training to begin with...and hoping that will not be a problem....ok so my question is this.........do I put down paper or wee wee pads near the door as well as take her outside or do I just do the outside thing with her? Any input on this would be appreciated.......thank you Trudi
Trudi,

Please check with your Vet and/or Breeder on whether or not the puppy can be exposed to the outside elements. She should already have some vaccines by now - and I have always taken my dogs outside in MY own yard at that age. I'm against the puppy pads and/or newspaper - I think it gives them the wrong message - you will have more difficulty getting them to go outside after you've allowed them to go inside (on the paper). This is just my opinion - I know many people potty train this way!

Crate training is a definate must - not only for ease of housebreaking - but also for safety reasons! Puppies can get into a lot of trouble - so keeping them crated when you leave and/or at night is a must!

Good Luck!
Kristen
Kristen....thanks so much for the reply..I feel the same way...potty outside..no paper...I know accidents will happen but they will be just that "accidents"...she will come with one set of shots I believe and I plan on taking her to my vet for check up as soon as I get her so I will definitely ask about her time outdoors...and I'll ask all my other questions as well...like HOW much to feed her etc...Always having had toy breeds I feel like I'm such a newbie at this :) Anyways thanks for the reply and I absolutely LOVE this forum... I have been reading daily for months now and I feel like I'm getting to know the regular posters :) Trudi
