Protective of Bob even with me

Chauncey was MY birthday present about 14 mos ago. He has always been affectionate but playfully nippy with both of us ( which we discourage ). Bobby usually goes to bed earlier than I do ( former ER night nurse ). For the past 3 weeks or so Chauncey ( now 16 mos old ), who LOVES to go to bed, will go off to bed with him, then when I go to bed he will become almost aggressive and reach out and grab me. Last night after an early morning hunting trip Bobby fell asleep on the couch for a couple of hours. Chauncey & I went for a walk and played. About 10, I decided to wake Bob & send him to bed. Chaunce was asleep on his doggie bed but as soon as I got to the couch he was barking, jumping in the middle of Bob's back and biting at me. He has become so attached and protective of him. WHY :?: And now what do we do????????

It is difficult to assess and give advice over the internet on something like this. It could be simply ressource guarding, or it could be something else, but you must be sure NOT to put Chauncey in a postion where he might bite.

In the event he is displaying guarding behavior, here is a site with some information on it. If you scroll down you will see where it talks about the couch or bed.

It may be as simple as you bringing him an ice-cude that he likes so much, when you think there may be an issue, Make it pleasant for him to join you and hubby.

Aside from that, are you still needing to restrain him for grooming? And he has bitten you before, correct? This may be serious if not dealt with properly. I would have no hesitation in contacting a behaviorist. Often just one visit can help understand what is happening and then you can set the stage for future interactions.

If Chauncey was my dog he would no longer be allowed on the bed or couch without an invite. He would learn "off" the bed or couch and learn "settle" or "bed" for when it is time to sleep or rest in another place.

I would not be using any force or hands near him when he may behave this way, and if he was being free-fed then that would be stopped right away and he would be hand fed his meals on a scheduled basis.....in his bed or somewhere laying down on the floor.

I hope things settle down with him, but this type of thing always makes me nervous.

Dixie goes to bed with my husband, first, also. When I go I sometimes have to move her off of my side and off of my pillow   I will either call her to another area of the bed, or I will get under the covers and make it uncomfortabel enough for her so that she moves herself. I am waiting for the day she grumbles and complains, and if and when that happens she will lose the benefit of sleeping with her dad.

Hope this helps.
I have no advice, I've never heard of something like this before...
I think maybe you need to reestablish your position with him. Even go further than sheduled meals and go to hand feeding him kibble by kibble while he sits?
Has Chauncey ever been to an obedience class??( I know you had posted about this before but I cannot remember :) ) You take him to class! I think this would help a lot. The class will help you bond in a different way .Teach him the Off command, and a down stay will help too! Guinness just hit 20 months and is trying my patience a little too!! Good Luck!!!. I know others on the forum will have good advice for you also.
