Weight Watchers

Ok...I'm going. I'm going to my first meeting tomorrow morning at 7:30am. Which (for me) is a perfect time.

You all know, I've gained a lot of weight over the last 5 or so years. I've tried all the "fast" diets, Atkins, South Beach, etc. They work great, until you have one cheat...and who doesn't have one cheat! Then your whole system is back to square one.

So, on the advice of my Doc, I'm giving weight watchers my heart and soul.

I probably won't start the diet until Tuesday, but I don't want to put it off for another week. And to be honest, I'm tired of overeating....and how I feel...and look  .

So...tomorrow starts a new chapter in my life. As I mentioned before, 2007 will be the year of good physical and mental health for me.

And....you'll have to pardon me if I get cranky along the way!!!!!

My mom did fantastic on Weight watchers...she lost 80 pounds and has kept it off for 2 years.....I dont do well on it...too many choices...I am better with a more restricted diet like Body for Life.....
Deborah, I've been a WW for over 20 years. It's the only plan that is successful for me. I need the accountability. My advice: don't expect miracles (the weight didn't go onovernight, it's not coming off overnight),stay in your points range, eat 2 veggies during lunch (get them out of the way), drink the water, write everything you eat in the journal, and go to the meetings. It does no good to "follow the plan" if you don't go to the meetings. Meeting are crucial.

I'll be getting back on track on Tuesday the 2nd. We can be crabby together.

(Guess this means the on-yum loaf at Hackney's is not in the picture for some time).
How many points could the onion bricks possibly be :excited: .

Scotch is 2 points...so we can work that in.

Did you ever think, we could do lunch and eat healthy?????????????
Meals are never a problem for me. My downfall is evening snacking. I can easily eat 20 points just in snacks.

I don't suppose a lunch of Scotch and onion brick is healthy???????
Good for you Deb....in my opinion.. WW is the BEST weight loss program out there.. it's not a diet..it's a restructue on how you eat.

I joined in 2000.. cause I couldn't bend over and touch my toes...literaly...I was always a fit, active healthy person.. moved to a new province... was very homesick and loney.. so I ate....218 lbs....I had a lot of "junk in my trunk". My goal was to lose 1 lb a week.. very doable, not to much pressure.. that would be 52 lbs in a year.. so I set my goal at that...I reached my goal in the first year and since 2000, I have lost 82 lbs. My advice to you is:

1. Drink your water - I would drink all my water in the morning.. cause I hate doing it.. I still do.. but I get it done early in the day. Buy the WW mug.. fill it up and once it's gone...your done.. everything after that is a bonus.

2. Write it down - Always write it down.. weather it's good or bad.. be accountable for it..if its good.. you can see it.. if it's bad..you know where NOT to go the next time...There were many days I had 50+ points.. I didn't dwell on it.. I would just refocus the next day.

3. Go to the meeting FAITHFULLY - I still go to my meetings EVERY Saturday morning.. It is routine..I get weighed..then attend the meeting.

4. Buy some WW cookbooks - they are loaded with wonderful simple receips. Also invest in the measuring spoons.. no guessing involved when you are dishing up your portions.

5. Focus on losing the weight first then introduce whatever fitness routine you are going to use. - My goal was to lose the weight in the first year. THEN join a gym. I didn't want to put to much pressure on my self the first year... got to eat right.. got to get to gym.. got to do this.. got to do that.. it can get overwhelming.. so I had one focus.. loss weight..when I reached that, I moved onto the next one.. getting fit. I'm not saying I didn't exercise. I walked regularly every day.. I just waited to join a gym.

6. Take your tools with you - When you go out to get groceries. .take your point counter, when you get your groceries home.. write on the box how many points, per serving it is... when you go to to a resturant.. be very specific as to how you want things cook.. butter/salad dressing/sauces on the side please.. that way you control how much goes on your food.

7.. Eat what you want - but be accountable for it.. I never gave up anything that I truly loved.. cream, butter, chochlate, pie, cake... if I wanted it.. I ate it.. but i had to write it down...or came up with new ideas on how to cook it... that's where the cookbooks come in.

I am very passionate about WW.. it works....if you attend your meetings, get weighed, be accountable for what you eat (writing it down).

I have attached a website that I use faithfully for meal ideas.. it's great check it out. Also on this website, the webcontroller will develop an Excel spreadsheet with your starting weight and you goal weight, and every week you put your weight in and it will chat via a graph as to where you are in your journey. I used it.. it was great.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Brenda
Me, too!! Me, too!

I lost almost 50 pounds on WW in 4 months, but was very anal about it.

What worked for me was:

Drink the water....religiously. I always carried a bottle of water with me.

No more sugar. Only Splenda, or diet drinks. etc. This was easy as Don is diebetic.

Say "NO" to things that you know will be a problem. Like Kim I needed structure, so chocolate, sugar candies, white bread or donuts never crossed my lips for 4 months.

A 1/2 hour walk every day.....rain or shine.

Don't miss the meetings. If you can't make your regular one, go to another one...but go...

Now I haven't been in a while (and it shows in my clothes sizes) but I have heard that the point sustem is out....Not sure what it is replaced with, though.

Good Luck!!!!!
These posts are wonderfully encouraging! I will follow all this good advice. I'm ready and willing to be committed, ah....maybe that wasn't a good choice of words! But you know what I mean!!!!!

Hugs to all of you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:ghug:
Good luck, Deb! you can do it. You will feel so much better because of it! :P
I went to my first meeting Saturday morning. My leader was really nice, and since I was the only new person, she spent a lot of time with me.

Today is my first day on the diet. And boy, do I ever feel yucky from all the junk I ate since Saturday!!!! I feel bloated, headachy and just sore all over (probably from carrying so much weight around!)

So... here I am, my first step of my journey....started it with a 4 point breakfast, and 3 glasses of water.

For my snack, I've brought (to work) carrots, celery, sugar free jello, and a big jug of sugar free green tea!

I'm armed and ready!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Woo Hoo!!!!!!!
You go girl!

We should start a thread for WW recipes and food tips.

Low-fat or fat-free cheese sticks make a great snack. One point each.
I'm not a sweet eater, but I love salty stuff (Doritos, Cheetos, chips)...so I'd love to find something like that to munch.

I did buy the Jolly Pop healthy popcorn, 1 point!
I started a recipe exchange under cooking. Hope we get some goodies!
First post made in new thread on Cooking forum.

Deborah, I'm cheap, so I buy the 94% fat-free micro popcorn from Walgreen's. 3 for $1. It's in the blue bag. 1 point for the whole bag.
Been a WW fan for years...joined 3 times...LOL but I am a slacker when it comes to measuring the foods. I failed by guestimating...no wonder huh.

So many good points listed. I did very well as long as I stuck to it, and didn't have any road blocks like camping, or weddings out of town...I tended to give my self permission to cheat, and then completely fell off the wagon.

Some yummy treats, the Skinny Cow Icecream sandwiches, yum...low points, check the box.

Use the forum, the US one is more gossipy but the Canadian one more helpful...so I used both LOL. But it helped to get points info, and recipe ideas.

WW was also a thumbs up by my doctor, a well balanced way eating.
Hi all! This am I had my first weigh in (after being on the diet since Tuesday). I lost :rimshot:

4 pounds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm really excited and proud. I figured I would lose, maybe, 2 pounds, since it wasn't a whole week.

I'm really motivated now!!!!! WOO HOO :go:
AWESOME!!! Can you treat yourself with a Weight Watchers dessert? Although I guess the whole point of this is to change your tastebuds and proportion to want healthier things.

Good job!!! Hope to hear about more weight burning off in the coming weeks!
That's my girl! I had a WW leader who would say at the end of the meeting "I want to see less and less of you next week."

There are 3,500 calories in a pound. You consumed 14,000 LESS calories than normal to lose 4 pounds! That is a great achievement. (I am such a geek).
I have two challenges this week. I am having dinner out Wed and Friday night. Wed. I'm going to a steak house. I've pretty much decided to get the shishkabob, and immediately put 1/2 in a doggie bag. They have a salad bar, so I can fill up on that before I get my entree, and I think I'll skip the baked potato. I think I'm safe.

But Friday, my assistant is retiring and we are taking her to her favorite Italian restaurant. You know the kind, huge plates of oil and cheese laden pastas! I'm nervous about it. They do have a grilled chicken breast sandwich on the menu, so I'm thinkin' I'll get that and a salad, and toss the bread...and maybe a cup of minestroni soup. What do you think? Any other suggestions?

Thanks!
The steakhouse menu sounds fine. You could do half the baked potato with a little butter and sour cream.

The Italian place--do the grilled chicken sandwich and a salad. Get them at the same time, cut up the chicken and put it on the salad. Red sauce (marinara) isn't that high in points so if you were dying for pasta, you could get cheese ravioli and red sauce. I'm not a red sauce fan, so I'd go for the chicken and salad.

Props for figuring out ahead of time. Last week my leader said "don't set yourself up for failure. Set yourself up for success." And that's what you are doing.
Deb....

I have to say, I am very proud of you.. you will succeed at this lifestyle change, becuase you are "thinking ahead"...

Paula has a very good suggestion.. do half of the baked potatoe.. if you like salad dressing, use low fat ranch, instead of the butter and sour cream or you can stick with the salad that way you can enjoy the steak.. reminder.. when they list 7, 10, ozs etc, , on the menu.. that is before they cook it.. it's not nearly that when it gets to your plate.

When I do Italian.. I always get grilled chicken on top of a salad.. with the dressing on the side.. so that I control how much goes on the salad.

Enjoy yourself at both functions. Eating out is not the enemy when we make the right choices.
Also...remember...go easy on the salad bar. I know people (ahem...my husband) who go NUTS at the salad bar and fill up on everything it has (cheese, croutons, all the other high calorie things offered) and then tops the heaping mound with Ranch. And then proceeds to eat his whole dinner.

Salad bars are great and they have great offerings...just make sure to remember that just because it's on the salad bar, doesn't mean it's good for the waistline. (and that too much salad can add up the calories too, even the 'good' choices).

Good luck!
Just weighed in since we have WW at work. I lost .6 pound. I'm not discouraged though because that's two sticks of butter!
Oh Paula! FABULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :go: :yay: :cheer:

I'm really proud of you!!!!!! We're going to be so healthy and
B-E-A-U-TIFUL!!!! (Actually, we're pretty darned beautiful now!)

Does this mean I can't have a big platter of lasgna dripping in meat sauce with tons of grated cheese on top?

You can totally order that...but then the only amount you can consume is 1 bite...maybe 2
When I started this "lifestyle change" (not diet), my pants were soooooo
tight! Well, they certainly are not loose by any means, but! they fit!!!

And when I walk, I can feel the fabric moving around my thighs which means, they are no longer tight! Woo hoo!

I have my weigh in tomorrow morning, and I am excited!!!!!!!!
Good Luck!! or I guess Good Willpower!! :D
Deborah, how did dinner go Wednesday night? What did you have?

Tell Tony you're going to have to spend a lot of money on new clothes. The ones in smaller sizes!
Ha ha! He'll be just thrilled to hear that.

I ordered the sirloin shishkabab. It was 8 oz, cut in 3 chunks (I'm sure pre-cooked weight, cuz those chunks were mightly little!), with grilled veggies. I ordered an extra thing of veggies.

I ate 2 pieces of the sirloin, and one portions of veggies, a green salad (none of the fattening stuff like cheese, eggs, bacon) and 1 scotch.

Today for lunch, I'm having the other piece of meat and veggies. And boy, am I really forward to it!!! 8)
I anxiously await tomorrow as much as you....

good luck
Today was weigh in! This week (week 2), I lost 2.2 pounds! I'm very happy with that, and I know, that the rate of weight loss will start slowing now.

I think this is the week I should probably start adding some sort of exercise.

One lady in my class, marches in place during tv commercials. She said if you track it, it's amazing how quickly the minutes add up.

Hmmmmm  think I may try that this week! Its something I never thought of!!!!
debcram wrote:

Try Belly dancing! :D

http://www.expertvillage.com/videos/bel ... -three.htm

Shimmying really melts off the pounds!
Paula...when is your weigh in day???? Can't wait to hear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This morning was weigh in. I lost 1 pound. Its hard after you first start to get excited by 1 pound, but the leader assured me that was great!!! She said they like to see weight losses of .5 - 2 per week (the higher for men) after your body gets used to the eating this way.

I know I did everything right. And you know what? It is a very livable way to eat! I haven't felt hungry, or deprived once.

So...I'll take my pound and walk happily into the sunset until next week!

(I'm still waiting to hear from Paula!)
:clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple:

Remember.. one pound per weeks is 52lbs per year...I used to get soooooo excited when I lost a pound!!!

You go girl....
GREAT JOB!!! Keep it up!!! Just don't get too discouraged!
Oh! I'm not discouraged!! I'm excited!!

This is the week I planned on adding the weight watchers workout dvd to my life.

When I got home, I put it in. There are 5 sections to chose from. I decided the cardio dance would be the best place to start. YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN IT!!! I was a total Klutz!!! I was stepping on my own feet, and tripping myself! Then the dogs saw me and went bezerk!!! They were jumping at me, and barking...like "What the heck are you doing Mama? Are you ok? Should we call 911?"

I had to lock them out of the room!!! I made it through the 20 minutes ( did slow down a bit from time to time). I didn't feel graceful or athletic, but I did feel like it was good start!
How were things last week?
I did very well!!! I lost 3.4 pounds! I'm down 10.6 (after 1 month). I'm really glad I'm doing this.

I got my second 5 pound star!!!

I also re-measured myself. I've lost 2.5 inches on my waist, 1 inch for my hips, 1 inch on my thigh and .5 inch on my arm.

Its great!!!!

(I wasn't going to write anymore about this, cuz I thought I was getting boring! Thanks for asking!)
WAY TO GO!!!! yeeeeeeeeee hawwwwwwwww...you are doing awsome.

Deb, it never gets boring...I look forward to your Saturdays.
No way is it boring, Deb! I love to hear how you are doing!..

Just don't disappear into nothing on us... 8O

You go girl!

i've lost 15lbs in total lost 10 before i joined ww

my family don't help they are trerrible for bad stuff and i think in genetically predispossed to snacking and can't seem to break the habbit.
and suggestions

zoe
Oh Zoe...that's too bad you aren't getting more support from your family.

In our house, its just my husband and me. He is pretty good about helping me.

He eats the same things I do, but more, and adds butter (I don't). He also eats a pint of ice cream every night...which is not a tempation for me.

If I were you, I'd just feed everyone the same as you are making for yourself!!! And stop buying them so many treats!!! Get them eating fruits, veggies and other good things. It will help them in the long run too!!

Losing 15 pounds is fabulous!!! :clappurple: Did you ever pick up a 15 pound bag of anything? Its a lot of weight!!! (more than I've lost!)

We can be weight watcher buddies if you like!!!
that would be great thank you

i get weighed on a thursday and i hav been really good this week hope it makes a difference

i've told my family as i do the cooking they eat what i eat or the go hungry (mean?)

my mum, dad and brother are living with me at the mo as their house is being renovated and the it has not stairs, water, elec, bathroom or kitchen at the moment and i'm not used to cooking for 6 only 3 well 2 and a half isaac is only 20 months and doesn't eat that much.

thank you again

zoe

I don't think it is mean...you aren't a restaurant or short order cook. Especially since what you are probably eating is a healthier and more well balanced meal...you are actually doing something good for them. Not that they will see it like that
this week i lost 0 lbs but i didn't put on any either so it better than the last two gains

zoe and einy
Yes it is, Zoe  ! Have you gotten you family under control yet?
Zoe, I was thinking about you last night. Everyone has a different reason for gaining weight. Mine is snacking. If I don't snack, I'll lose. Some people eat the right food, but too much of it. I think we need to discover what makes us gain and work on that. One of my ways to combat snacking is make myself wait for 10-15 minutes. If I think "I want those cookies in the kitchen" I tell myself I can have them in 10-15 minutes. Most of the time I don't want them, but sometimes I end up eating them.

I know you are a busy mum, but maybe you could take Isaac and Einy for a walk every day. That will get you away from the food, and you'd get some exercise.
Paula and Zoe...how are you doing???? Update, please!!!

:ghug:
we have been so sick here i couldn't go to ww this week i didn't want to give all the ladies there my killer germs

still spluttering as i type you would think being so ill i've hardly eaten would make you lighter but not in my case

so i'm back off to ww on thursdat having got rid of most of my evil germs

haha i would walk isaac and einy but one of two thing would happen there would be a screaming woman in a bright red coat draging a push chair being dragged around by i giant fluff dog at a million miles an hour

or

we wouldn't get anywhere it all dependes on how einys paranoid argophobia is on that particular day

zoe and einy (what you want me to get off of this bed and go out it that !!!!)
Oh Zoe! I hope you are feeling better soon! Good luck Thursday!
i couldn't go last week as i was really sick but i've went today and had lost 5.5 lbs

woohoo me
so i went out a bought myself a few new dresses for laura ashley ( in the sale)

i have decided to dress up every day to look nice and feel good good about myself i found i snack less if i dress nice odd i know but i works for me

zoe and einy
Zoe! That's wonderful :clappurple: !!!! I know how much of difference it is to "get dressed", even when there are little ones at home. My kids (who are now in college) are just 15 months apart, and most days I stayed in grubby clothes...and that just made me feel grubby and not special.

Its important motivation to feel special about ourselves. We will take better care if we do.

And, my dear...you are special!
I found a great weight watcher recipe site today - found dozens of recipes that I really want to try asap. http://www.angelfire.com/journal/wwrecipes/
Yes, I like that site. I swear I'm going to make that apple souffle sometime. It sounds wonderful! Another great site is

www.hungrygirl.com

Lots of tips and links.

It was really fun to find this topic again. How fun to read my first post about making the decision to join WW. And now, I'm becoming a leader!!!

I did my very first Getting Started Session last night. All I can say, is that it apparent that it was my first time! I'm sure I will improve, although my (very kind) mentor said it was great...for a first time!
My almost DIL is doing the WW online with her mom. She is doing very well! However, her mom isn't doing as well. Have you had much experience with that program, Deb?

LeAnne and I were thinking of joining it. 8)
I haven't worked the online for myself, but I've gotten lots of feedback on it. If you are very discplined, it works. Howver, if you are like me, you really need to attend meetings, and have some sort of accountability to others, as well as to yourself.

Meetings, and the support you receive in meetings, in my humble opinion are key.

Something to tell your online friends, they will not be able to achieve lifetime status by doing on line. When they are within 10 pounds of their goal, tell them to join meetings to be able to reach that status. It is very important.
debcram wrote:

why?
Can I join the WW group here too please?

I have lost 9and half pounds in the last 4 weeks.

My boss who i now share an office with is a WW queen and knows the points value of EVERY food, so she is helping me too.

I get weighed on a wednesday and I want to loose another 50lbs so I could be here a while!!

For a couple reasons:

1. Your own pride of accomplishment and self-esteem.
2. As long as you remain within 2 pounds of your goal (with free monthly weight ins) you can attend as many meetings (for continuing support) as you want for free. And after you do reach goal, you still want to monitor your eating habits, so you stay at goal.
LOL - glad you asked, Kerry. I was clueless too!

I am not very "up" on all that WW does. :)

I find I am often clueless, but not usually alone in being so. My new aim in life is to gain clarification for all :P :P :P

The equally clueless are indebted to you forever. :D

Thanks Deb for the info. I will have to check into it.
I've been Leader subbing for the last few months, and love it! But! I just got assigned to my own (new) meeting!!! It will be a Sunday 9 am meeting, in a center, and the first one will be Aug. 24th.

I'm so exciting. It will be wonderful to have my own members that I can bond with and build up continuity!!

I wish you all lived closer and could be in my group!!!

I just figured, if you were all in my group, you'd be more forgiving!
:phew:
I am joining Weight Watchers Tuesday and very excited, I hope I do well on it. I know I will go to meetings becaue I will need the support and accountability. As I was reading this thread all of you have really inspired me. I will let you know how it went when I get home Tues. evening :!:
:clappurple:

What a great decision you've made! Please let us know how you do, and if you need some help along the way!!!!
Thank You, and I will absolutely keep in contact with you :D
Went to my first meeting tonight, and LOVED it :!: :!: I have chose the flex plan and can't wait to get started tomorrow. Also excited that I way 10lbs. less than I thougt I did  Where can I find an electronic flex points calculator? This sure beats the heck out of Atkins!!!
:cheer: I was thinking about you last night at my meeting, when I gave my getting started session!

What a bonus to start 10 pounds lighter!!!

You can get the points calculator right at your meeting. They are WONDERFUL! It is one of my "gotta have" tools!!!!

Have a great week!
Hi all,

I'm attending my first ww meeting today in the UK and i'm very excited but also very nervous as i have tried many diets before although I am very aware that this isn't a diet and a lifestyle change which i'm definitely ready for!

Wish me luck

Dina xx
Dina, good luck. I've always found the leaders very friendly, helpful, and wanting everyone to succeed. There's a lot of info, so take your time and get to know the program. It really works when you follow it!
I rejoined WW the beginning of February. I've had a long history with them. I even used to be a leader! Since I joined I've lost 8 pounds.

It is not a fast weight loss diet, but a long term diet. The weight you lose will stay off if you follow the plan.

The reason it is so successful is no food is forbidden. If you really want it, and work it in (which you can!) you can have it.

Good luck. Be true to you and to the plan and remember to track all your food.
This was sent to be when I very first started with WW. I printed it out and carried it in my WW book. It is the best advice anyone could give you!

Also on this website, the webcontroller will develop an Excel spreadsheet with your starting weight and you goal weight, and every week you put your weight in and it will chat via a graph as to where you are in your journey. I used it.. it was great.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I joined weight watchers in Jan this year and have so far lost 56lbs :cheer:

I love the plan and my leader is great too. I help out every week too, so that keeps me on the straight and narrow lol

I'm in the UK is the American weight watchers that different to ours?
As an "ex" leader, I'm pretty sure they try to keep the program as uniform as possible. It is a great program, and huge congrats on your terrific success! KEEP IT UP! :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :yay: :yay: :yay:
Oh good, the thread has been revived. I finally busted a 3 month plateau, and I am under the weight I never want to see again. My goal this week is to eat only what I love. There's lots of snacks at work and I could graze my way around the fllors but that's just mindless eating. So no mindless eating for me.!
Paula, I'm so proud of you!!!! Over the last year, I have not been a good example. Yesterday I finally found a dress for our holiday party, and if I gain as much as 2 pounds, it won't fit!!!!! So....I'm being totally compliant for the next week and a half!
Hi all. I joined WW, in 1989 got to gold it was called then- got a star flake tie pin as a present from WW as we all loose differently. I have stayed with in in mind over the years, am still around the same weight (9st 4 lbs and I am 5' 9" tall). The reason I have kept "trim" is that we still race "scrambles sidecar" and I don't like it when my race gear gets to tight for comfort. All our sheepies have gone to our racing since tiny pups so non have be afraid of bikes or noise. There have been many different style of plans- I still keep the one I lost with in mind (selections- can have so many fruits/breads/milks/protein + unlimited veg. xx
