Finding a breeder

Hi, I love that I found this forum. Maybe someone can help me. I am very interested in buying an Old English Sheepdog after doing a lot of research. I am not sure though how to go about finding a good breeder in my area. I am willing to drive a few hours to buy one, but where is a good place to look for a breeder. I am also not planning to buy one until the end of June, is now a good time to start looking for breeders?

Welcome! It is awesome that you are doing your research! I'll quick post a quote about how to locate a good breeder, and then add a couple comments:

Quote:
Tarja T. Koistila is a member here at the forum and is the chairperson of the Breeder Referral program Old English Sheepdog Club of America (OESCA). She will be able to refer you to a breeder in your area who has, at a minimum, signed the OESCA Code of Ethics. I am sure she will be happy to assist you!! You will STILL need to do your homework and ask lots of questions of those breeders.

If you are a member of the forum, you can contact Tarja through the forum, one of two ways:

Through email here at the forum:
http://forum.oes.org/profile.php?mode=email&u=498

Or through a Private Message (PM) here at the forum:
http://forum.oes.org/privmsg.php?mode=post&u=498

Also check out this list at the OESCA: http://www.oldenglishsheepdogclubofamer ... ferral.htm

Keep in mind that a lot of these breeders may or may not be computer literate. When I was looking for my puppy's breeder the BEST way to do it was by phone conversation. One phone call from a breeder given to me by Tarja led to another phone call which led to another phone call which led me to another phone call which led me to my precious boy. It sounds like more work than it was - but I did have a lot of phone conversations!!! :D

I'm happy for you - good luck!

Absolutely! Ethical breeders produce quality, not quantity. Don't be surprised if you have to get on a waiting list for a puppy. Resist the urge to make a split-second purchase; be patient. Get the healthiest puppy with the best temperament you can afford. And ask lots of questions here. :-)

Welcome and Good Luck!
Yeah, exaclt what THEY said!

...and welcome to the forum!
Thank you for the replies! They were very helpful. I will keep you informed.
Also, hanging around here you never know who you'll meet! :D
