Raw, red patch of skin

I was rubbing Max's belly and discovered under one of his front legs, an area that is raw and irritated looking. I'm going to treat him for fleas because he has been itching alot, and the vet said to keep the area dry and trim any hair away. I have been having trouble keeping Max free of mats. I was planning on having him bathed and groomed this week, should I wait until his area is cleared up? How on earth am I going to trim off the hair in that area?

Thanks, Sharon

As long as the area is not open I would go ahead and have him groomed. UNLESS you think it might be rigworm. Has your vet looked at it?
It sounds like it might be a hot spot. If you do a search on the forum, you'll find it's been discussed a few times. Someone also posted a photo of a hotspot as well.
I ment to say RINGWORM.
Thanks all, I'm not sure this is caused by fleas, it is the only area he is scratching on his body, so maybe it is a hot spot. I guess I thought hot spots were a summer thing? At this point, I'm going to keep the area dry and I may try to shave it myself. Max is quite matted in certain areas, under arms and neck. And this particular area is somewhat hard to keep dry because it's under his arm. I may have to have the vet look at it, I'm going to give it a few days and see if the advantage causes him to quit itching.
It was me that posted the picture, just hit my camera. Sometimes a dog can have an allergy to flea bites and then the hot spot develops. They can get hot spots any time of the year-- believe me!
Tasker is allergic to fleas and developes TERRIBLE hot spots. A hot spot can also develope under a matted area. Any skin irritation or break can devlope into a hot spot.

We use betadine daily to wash the area, then sprinkle on Gold Bond powder.
I looked at the pictures and it definitely resembles Clydes hot spot. Max not only has mats, but he may have a few fleas as well, so no wonder he's irritated! I will try the wash and gold bond powder also, Ginny. You all are great, I feel like such a loser, these doggies are definitely a challenge in the hair department

In all fairness, that was Lucy. That's proof that any dog is just as susceptible!
