A kitchen story

Once there was a kitchen eaten away by termites and age...one day the lovely new homeowners decided that the kitchen should look as good as it felt...so they tore the heck out of the old ones and bought new ones.....

Do I see a sliding pantry on the pickup? :D
This is going to be a GOOD story 8)

shhhh, cant tell the ending before reading the whole story Ron...just have to wait and see.....
The ghosts will probably destroy the house before you can put the kitchen in.
I'm just going to save some time and post this now, http://the-atlantic-paranormal-society.com/ I'm sure it will be needed at some point during this story.
Specifically check the demonology department icon on the left hand side...
Ooooooooh!! Can't wait to hear/see the rest of the story. I'm sure you designed yourself a doozy of a kitchen, Darce!!
HOW EXCITING!!!!!!!!!!!!
OOOhhhhhhh come on..... tells us moreeeeeeeeeeee.........

C'mon Darcy!! We want to know more!!!
Tomorrow everyone tomorrow....actually I dont even know...Brian is tearing out as we speak...ill bring the camera home tonight....

the only new appliance is a dishwasher...yey...and you shouldnt even be able to tell that it is there. It has hidden controls and a door panel on it.....we'll seeeeeeee..

My refer is staying the same for the time being..and my stove is an antique 1944 range...so that is staying too

click on the left...chambers models..scroll down to the blue one...thats my stove but in white...
Oh I am soooo excited for you!!!
ohhhhhh, this thread is a good one!!! I'm also jealous!!!! :D
Once apon a time, a sad woman named Marianne glanced apon boxes of items to be placed in another womans kitchen and became insanely jealous.

>>Now sitting on pins and needles waiting for the story to unfold regarding the other woman's kitchen. :P

Marianne and her ugly kitchen
Oh you are going to love your new kitchen , I just had mine done and now I even do the dishes by hand sometimes :D
ive been doing dishes by hand for the past 3 yrs...I am not looking back...no more dishpan hands for me!! :D
Darcy I have been around since before 1944 so I guess I'm an antique also LOL

haha...you and my mom....when i told her we bought a historic house, she was thrilled...she asked what yr it was built...I said 1944...she replied...you do realize that was the year i was born 8O ...

open mouth, insert foot 8O
That's practically a new house compared to most homes around here. LOL
Ok, I have my hot chocolate ready and a stack of
chocolate chip cookies nearby.

:lmt: Ready for the next chapter of the story..................

.....................................................................................

........................................................................................

........................................................................................
well, the kitchen story has to be postponed for one more day...
I took the camera home last night and took some great shots...however, dummy me forgot the memory card in the computer at work...sigh..and i cant find the cord that attaches from the camera to the computer directly...D'oh!
  Figures!! Tease us, why don't you?

Thw kitchen story is a mystery :D
and so the lady of the house comes home to find this...
Image
and this
Image
and this
Image
and here is the evil and scary conduit wire that decided to move all by itself...note to self...should remove personal notes off of the back door before taking pictures...this one happens to say...Let her out immediately..she didnt poop 8O
Image
and note the 1944 electrical wire hanging out of the ceiling, which was supposed to be "updated" with the rest of the house...
Image

so the tear out continues...tomorrow its the sink run...can you say.."bye bye sinky poo"?
Image
8O the evil and scary conduit wire that decided to move all by itself. 8O

http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?t=11373
this should explain that part of the remodel... 8O
Now, this is my kind of story.

How is it possible you can do without a kitchen during the holidays? I'm in 8O . You are much more easy going than me. How long do they expect it to take? You're lucky you have "connections" in the industry. That must give you some peace of mind knowing you have some pull in the matter.
well, technically we are not celebrating at our house this yr...i am not easy going and brian is worse...we are wound tighter than drums....im sure you will hear me complain as much as my customers :D
Chapter 3.....

The nice lady and her husband just dont seem to agree on the kitchen these days...words are said and miscommunication abounds...neither the nice lady or her husband are happy.

This is not an isolated incident among remodels...the nice lady sees it happen all of the time...just never thought it would happen to her :?

Sooo, the nice lady did the smartest thing EVER....

She hired a contractor 8)
Woohooo!!! Yay Darcy!!! :)

So maybe now not months before you have a kitchen again??
Wondering why nice, but sometimes dense, lady who has years experience in industry thought she could do it herself? Like a doctor, people in the industry are often the worse clients.

Very happy for beautiful, nice lady but joins beautiful clown in BC in wishing redo isn't in own kitchen.

Seeing ghostly conduit and probable air pressure change causing motion, last night had ghost playing flute in bathroom. Probably wind blowing across sanitary stack on roof...I hope.
the nice lady didnt think she could do it herself...her slower but nice husband did....she has a tendancey to let him talk her into things....

glad the ghost found the right house....i sent her packing 8O
Hmmm, I have a hubby just like that. Projects take forever.
Definitely better to hire a contractor :) !
well nice lady we took the easy way , agreed that the house reno's was all my ball game , hired a contractor that we knew , gave him the plans that I designed, said go to it and left for 3 months with lots of phone calls, a few visits and a happy return home :D
:lmt: This is entirely too LITTLE information for those of us living vicariously and wanting new kitchens.
The nice lady made a wise choice by hiring a contractor.
We saved money by doing our kitchen ourselves but, I lived with my stove and refrigerator in my living room for 3 months.

And what should I do, my husband makes a living on beeing a contractor??

Perhapes i should start hiring him

How is the kitchen doing?
middle of chapter 3

The contractor came over and he and Brian decided on how to move the plumbing which stands in the way of the dishwasher..all lines are going to be re routed to the outside of the house....

sounds crazy, but there are so many lines on that side that 2 more small ones wont matter, besides it rarely freezes here....

the nice lady's husband came home from work yesterday to find little notes posted throughout the house...

"I love you"...." I DO love you"..."I really love you"...etc....the nice lady is in a nice mood again :D
Guess we know who's NOT COOKING a Christmas dinner!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't wait to see the next installment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
side note to Chapter 3

Ive..er, the nice lady has gained 4 lbs in one week from eating junk....

The remodel better get done soon or the nice lady will have to write another book on clothes shopping

I HATE not having a kitchen....I feel lost without cooking..
No pictures of the construction in progress?

I'm glad the nice lady hired a contractor. After seeing how long it too her hunky fireman husband to get the water heater hooked up, I was a bit concerned that the kitchen project could take more than a little while :D .
The nice lady's neighbors are pleased that the nice lady has running hot water in the house.

The nice lady's coworkers are happy too!!

Maybe that would work? But what I have found is contractors don't like doing any work on their own homes.
so now that the New Year is here...so is the new electrical wiring to the kitchen...we have wiring for undercounter lights, new additional outlets and the evil ghost wire is now gone....

We have had a set back...brian was tearing out baseboards and found a SWARM of ACTIVE termites....ewww gross...so now the termite guy is coming out on the 10th to drill on the inside of the house....

then we are onto squirrel cage vent hood, floating plaster walls, fixing bay window over sink (so that it will actually open), paint and then onto cabinets...

we are still a ways out guys....bear with me....
WOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! Progress!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That sounds horrible, I almost went crazy when we retiled our kitchen and put new counters tops in. It was only a mess for 3 days, I can't imagine a month of no kitchen. My heart goes out to you.
I'd go completely insane if I had to wait another week for termite guy...
8O
That's what I was thinking, too! 8O Active termites that got loose because of removing a baseboard and you have to wait another whole week??? I'd have gotten out the shop vac and vacuumed up the little suckers in the mean time!!!
chris....he did! nothing roaming at the moment...but just knowing that they are eating my walls away is gross enough 8O
Thankfully hunky fireman found termites! They are an awful problem down there. Hopefully termite inspection doesn't reveal serious structural problems requiring repairs.

Does lovely lady have a working refrigerator somewhere? Salad city!
lovely lady has a refer still in her kitchen, i think tomorrow it is moving to the back porch..(white trash like)....news to the nice lady...hunky fireman wants to buy her a brand new one.....so he doesnt care what happens to this one......
WooooHooo! Lovely lady being a very good lovely lady!

White Trash Outdoor Kitchen! Might as well move out a table, chairs and bucket for a sink! Roll over the BBQ and have a party!
good idea....whose bringing the Papst blue ribbon?
We'll bring the Moonshine
I'll bring the vittles.........whatever I can find: Road Kill Cafe.
Darcy wrote:

I guess I'll bring wine in a box.

Better to find the termites now. At least you can stop them before more damage is done. I'm so excited about all of your progress! And a new refrigerator! Very cool.
so here is what the kitchen looks like now

and my living room...

LOL Darcy....

Can't wait to see it done! :)
Why Darcey, doesn't everyones house look like thta

My new ''old fashion'' hutch area which will hold the phone and other misc. junk..

These were taken by Sue on Sunday...thanks Suze! My camera battery is still dead....the doors are actually on the cabinets now and it is starting to resemble a kitchen...I stood in there last night after brian went to bed and just stared....its been a long time, but I know after last night that all of my choices were correct and that it will be beautiful....Im starting to get butterflies......
Woohoo!!! Fantastic! Progress!! Yay!!! :)
Wonderful to see the progress! I really love the microwave/pantry area as well as the "old fashioned" hutch area. It must be so great to completely customize a kitchen to suit your needs/wants.

Can't wait to see it when it's done!
Yay, Looking good!
Looooooking GOOOOOOOOOD!!!
OOh Darcy, your new kitchen is going to be gorgeous! I can 'see' it now....beautiful cabinets...I really love the hutch
Hugs
Yea!!! Progress!!! Great wall color...everything looks like is coming together and starting to look great!!
Looking good darcy

:cheer: :cheer: :cheer:
:go: :go:

wendy and gismo
So happy to see pictures (and progess!). I love the color of the kitchen. very nice, warm, yet neutral color! I can't wait to see more (or the finished project).
Yes, lovely ladies' kitchen is taking shape. Glad to see she went back with white....just seemed right. Panty and microwave tells something about cooking habits in lovely ladies' home. Would have to be elsewhere here.....whatever.

Beautiful wall color and I see the plaster work. Nice. Is that the same window or did you change it out? Seems so low.......maybe same after checking back to earlier photo.

Has lovely lady figured out how to eat from back porch??

s.
Was wondering how the progress was going - looks great!! :high5: Bet you're really getting anxious now!

The termite problem is solved, I'm assuming? No structural damage?
We are keeping the same window...it was just covered with plastic...they are re-doing the original cranks...7 layers of paint had to be chipped away, new panes and new cranks...the window height is the same, i think its just an illusion because of the lack of cabinets....it looks normal now....just have to wait for the most resent pics. :D
also regarding the location of the micro....if you notice in the old photos, it sat on the counter across from the stove...i didnt have enough counter space as it was..so i move the location of the micro and coffee maker to an out of the way area....heck the only thing i use the dumb appliance for is defrosting and heating pandas breakfast...(she likes warm food after a cool night) :D
My point exactly. Mr. Micro is used here more than I care to mention....defrosting, vegetables in a hurry, melting cheese. Rarely used for popcorn
Awsome, Darcy!! You're getting there! :high5:

I cant wait to see the totally finished photos!
Sorry about typing Ladies' instead of Lady's. Yea gads. I know Darcy's other half is .....the other half. Apologies to Darcy, Brian, Panda and the rest of you........

>>Reminds self to be kind and say nice things about being happy for lovely lady.

Darcy, I'm so happy for you and your new kitchen!!!

Insanely jealous Marianne :?

PS I'll bring Possum Pie to the grand opening and of course the party hats..the little pointy ones, tiaras, and plastic firemans hats for the fellars.
I just love it. Love the cabinets and hutch and everything. Can't wait to see the finished product.

What have you been eating all of this time?

If you hadn't encountered unforseen circumstances what would have been a "normal time frame" for a kitchen remodel? Or is this normal? Curious because I want to remodel, maybe.
I agree: jealous as can be and HOW long does it take? I realize there are electricians, plumbers, cabinet people, counter people, floor people......so what is the average redo time? I have heard MONTHS from friends who have endured it.

Al fresco could be tiresome by now.
I just skipped the story - since I had read it before and just looked at the pictures. Kitchen Story for the illiterate! LOL

Keep the pictures coming it is looking great!
OK, as the lovely lady finished the bottle of wine (whine) while in the closet now? We are wondering what the brave, but measuring tape challenged fireman miss measured. Does this mean a whole new remanufacture of something?? Please not the sink counter top.
haha...no susan...it was for the width of the stove....it is an antique and hence an odd size.....

I measured the stove at 37 1/4 wide....set the cabs on either side of it at 38 1/2...and have the counters overhang 1/2'' which leaves 1/4'' play....well the counter top guys measured wrong the first time and said that the stove was 37 3/4 so that there wasnt enough room for a 1/2 overhang....instead of taking the tape measure himself and measuring he calls me at work and tells me to come home ...that I screwed it up completely and how could i do this for a living bla bla bla....

I get home, the subdecks are set and everything is fine....the contractor had the ct guys remeasure...and lo and behold I was right they were not....

I didnt even get an apology from brian...Im hurt and really really pissed off right now....

This just needs to get done or I need to be single.....sigh
Sounds like it is getting to Brian too.

Boy, aren't you glad you hired a contractor!!

Yes, but instead of freaking out on me, i wish he'd freak out on the contractor..... :?

Bless your heart, Darcy!! You need a break!! :ghug:
just keep thinking of how lovely your kitchen will be when all is done :D

I'm pissed off on your behalf. I know you measured it more than once, you were fussing over it while I was there. Don't let him get to you. You're doing an amazing job and you're going to have a kitchen that makes all of us green with envy
so heres a little teaser...the kitchen isnt done yet...but huge progress has been made...this is where we are at as of yesterday..

Looking good :D
VERY NICE! So happy for you! What a sink!
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! PROGRESS!!!! I bet you want it to be done so bad you can TASTE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WOW....Gorgeous!!!! 8O
I an SO jealous!!!
WOW Darcy it looks great!!!! It will be done soon.

By the way I like your show room model - she could get a job on The Price Is Right. I can see it now:
"And you can win these beautiful kitchen appliances being shown by the lovely Miss Panda."
Looking really good! I love it!!!
WOW darcy, it is looking spectacular, love the hidden dishwasher and the colours are just stunning. Love, love love the tap on the sink too.

Won't be long now till all finished and you are cooking up a storm in there. :D
I'm a little weirded out by the hutch. The top points one way and the cabinet the other. Although, if it's going to cause any consternation, I love it!!!
8)Your kitchen is coming along really nice. A lot of really neat ideas. I am looking forward to seeing the completed project. Please thank Panda for showing us around. :D
I don't know where I've been, I just saw this thread for the first time. What an odyssey you have endured and how wonderful to see the finish line on the horizon. It all looks so well planned and professionally designed. Having been involved in several kitchen makeovers myself I have found there are always many unforseen difficulties that pop up between the design and execution. It takes time to work through them.

As my dear mother used to tell me: "Patience is a virtue, obtain it if you can...seldom to a lady, never to a man." :D
Maxmm, great catch...........as soon as I read that I said, Yeah! That's what it is. It just felt......strange. Well, we know Darcy......looking for the edge.

Love the disappearing dishwasher! Mine has suddenly been called into duty.....not as a dishwasher, I've never used it, but as a silverware drawer. My original drawer broke and unrepairable...by us. If I had the money, I'd call you to design a new kitchen for me....especially after seeing how nice your kitchen is coming along.
I really like the style of your cabinetry. I also really like the apron sink too. :)

Also, just finished reading the rest of the thread too. You can send the your Hoosier/Sellers out East too that is now in your living room if you don't want that anymore either. ;)
It is really looking like a kitchen!!
I love the colors and the sink is just great. Yay, the end is in sight! :D :D
good catch mandy....i was kind of in a quandry about that area....i knew that i didnt want a full size pantry again there....but the width of the wall to the door would only bear something 15''...i could have had the doors on the base open the same way as the doors above, however, the drawer would have been useless...the acutal drawer box would have only been about 9'' deep....and i really could use the extra drawer....so it didnt end up perfect, but i gained storage...and if you look closely, i did put false panels on the side of the base to match the uppers......

Verve....actually if you look back at the living room mess at the far end is another hoosier, its not as old as the one in the middle of the mess, but its quite nice and its for sale...lol...brian seems to collect 2 of every antique...i bought the dining room furniture to blend with the one in the middle of the room....the other one has been kind of a misfit and has just ended up in the living room because i dont know where else to put it......if you have a armoire, ill trade ya... :D
Darcy wrote:

Ha, ha, Brian & my Chris would get along great! We have 2 Hoosiers too, although one is really a Sellers and they don't quite match as well as your's does! ;) And we did have a beautiful solid mahogany armoire that we sold for a song a few years back when Chris & I merged households because we couldn't get it through our front door, let alone up to the third floor where our bedroom is. 8O We both loved it and were so sad to see it go...
Your kitchen is coming along quite beautifully, Darcy. I love the cabinets...so pretty. If you think the hutch looks a bit weird with the cabinet at the side, then why not put handles on your false panels, this way it looks as if the cabinet opens on both sides.
We have been going thru our own kitchen reno, not to the same extent as you however. We did not change our cabinets but instead dressed ours up with crown molding and light valences and fancier toe kicks, with new counter top and also subway tile backspash with under counter lighting. Mine hasnt taken as long as yours but we also had a set back when we found mold under the existing backsplash and had to remove the cabinets and replace the drywall.
ive had too many clients come in with broken doors because the put knobs on the false doors and someone yanked them off trying to open it....so for better or worse, it is what it is.....
OMG the Kitchen saga~

The bare torn up Kitchen pictures looked scary!!

I dunno anything about kitchen remodeling but I LOVE the doors with glass windows, panels... That's how I want to separate the Kitchen from the dining room when we buy our house... soon..

I can't wait to see the final pics!
Wow, that is looking great! Excited to see it finished! I love the hidden dishwasher!

WOOHOO your kitchen is done. It looks great....love the subway tile
I see a fellow organizer! I can't stand when the cabinets are a mess inside....but with 7 people here I have had to learn to let go a bit.
WOW! :excited: It all looks fantastic, Darcy!

It looks great!
You must be thrilled!

P.S. The photographer cut off the bottom half of the lovely model in the kitchen.
Just in time to cook a big Easter dinner!! It looks FABULOUS! GREAT job!! :clappurple:
Darcy, I love the size of that sink. Who makes it? is there still room for a disposal underneath it?
the sink is Rohl/Shaw...30'' farmhouse...there is a disposal, quiet too!! I have an air switch to the right of the sink on the deck of the countertop.....
First thing I noticed: The towel holder ! LOLOL

Second was the Bay window,

Third? Sheepdog.

Then the rest. Looks GREAT!!!

"Air switch?" Is that to turn on the dispos-all or for something else?

Thanks for sharing this story with us, Darcy!
Ooooohhh! It is wonderful. I love your sink area, and the stove, and.. aww heck - everything! I am so happy for you that the project is nearly done! :D :D
its to turn on the disposal..its flush mount on the counter...so instead of having a switch on the wall, its more hidden on the counter...

thanks guys for being there thru this whole process....you all helped keep me sane.....or as sane as i will ever be.....I now feel like i have to do the living room and both bedrooms..however there will be a break ......i need a few months off!!

ps...the towel holder is from a small local mom and pop 'shabby chic'' store...only $22.00!
Oh, Darcy! It's beautiful!!! Enjoy!
Looks wonderful.
Bet you're glad to be finished. :clappurple: :clappurple:
So what's next?!!!
Hey Darcy - hint for Christmas present - I really like that towel holder as well! :bulb:

Your kitchen looks fantastic, but have a question. Is the Budweiser light hanging over the table yours or Brians?
^^

 I was just about to comment on the Bud. light. I enlarged the pic just to take a look. Wow, any guy would love to be married to someone who put that in the house. It looks really good!

I love the kitchen. So many great ideas.

Sign me up for the towel holder wishlist. I want to get one!
Hey Darcy...I want one of those towel holders too...maybe the shabby-chic place would like to give the OES forum a bulk deal?
Looks great!!!! :D
You must be so happy!
Darcy,

It is just beautiful! I love it and am so happy for you! Sign me up for one of those towel holders too. Oh, and sign me up for one of those sheepies in the picture too. Gotta love that cute sheepie.
8) Darcy: Your new kitchen looks great! Love the color of your granite! So many cool details in your kitchen. Love the "microwave/coffee" service area. Everything set away so neat and tidy. I'm the same way about my kitchen cupboards, neat and all labels facing forward.....Love the light fixture hanging above the kitchen table. It gives the room character. Your dinning room looks very nice also. A project finally completed, Yeah!
Darcy, I sorry but I've got to stop watching this post - its costing me too much money. But when I'm ready I call you for your design services. :D
Bravo Darcy!! :clappurple: Congratulations on a job well done!! :high5:
You deserve to celebrate!! :cheer: It's beautiful. Have you cooked in there yet?
Hi Darcy

:cheer:

LOVE THE NEW KITCHEN :cheer: :clappurple:

wendy and gismo
Yep,

It came out just as gorgeous as I knew it would! Fab job on everything Darcy... and I'm STILL lusting after that tall cabinet you have next to the doorway.

So when's the kitchen warming party? And what I should I bring???
if you guys want i will go in there to see if she would give us a deal on those paper towel racks...lol....

yes ive cooked a few meals so far ....everything works great!

house warming party...bring drinks and your dogs..everything else is covered!!

George, pm me when ever you need help!

if i could talk brian out of that lamp i would have....but i think ive made it work....ive also had to work around 3 wurlietzer juteboxes, a nickel slot machine, umpteen old radios........etc...sheese who knew design would be so hard!
Darcy, its totally beautiful. I'd love to come cook for you!!!!!!

Enjoy!
Kitchen looks great, especially the oven! ;)

I think I need a close-up of light hanging over your kitchen table. Can't quite make that one out...
Darcieeeee,

No thanks! That towel dispenser would cost somewhere between $5,000 and $120,000!!!!!

I'd have to install a bay window to go with the towel dispenser....
Need new cabinets to go around the window...
The layout wouldn't work anymore...
I'd need to add a second floor...
Great new look! Congratulations!
>>>Is still insanely jealous of nice lady and her beautiful kitchen!!!

Whazzat? No shoes in those cupboards? I seem to remember last year you had at least one pair of chocolate shoes in there.

Congrats Darcy and Brian on your new kitchen!!!!! Now when's the new kitchen celebration party and what time should we arrive?

Marianne and the boys
Darcy, WOW it looks so nice! You did a really good job. Bet you must be so glad its done. :D
Don't know how I missed this Darcy but it's just

BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, it looks great Darcy! I'm loving the countertops. (I spent the morning shopping for granite myself.) Can't wait to see it in person.
