BOSSIER CITY, La. — A pit bull puppy chewed off four of a baby girl's toes while the child's parents slept, police here said Monday. The parents were booked on charges of child desertion and criminal negligence and were being held in the Bossier Parish Jail pending an initial court appearance.

Police said the parents were sleeping on a mattress in the living room of their residence and the month-old girl was in an infant seat beside them when the puppy began chewing on their baby's toes.

Mary Shannon Hansche, 22, and Christopher Wayne Hansche, 26, told police they woke up to the sound of the baby crying, found her mangled foot and took her to the hospital about 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

"They did not see the dog injuring the child," police spokesman Mark Natale said.

The girl underwent surgery Sunday at Sutton's Children's Hospital in Shreveport. There was no way to reattach the child's toes, Natale said Monday.

The puppy was 6 weeks old and had no record of receiving its shots and will be quarantined for 10 days to check for rabies. Natale said he did not know what the puppy's fate would be after that.

"The puppy itself was just several weeks old! I mean this was essentially a puppy," Natale said.

No. Really?!?!?! I thought they were old foggies by the time they were a month old.

It must have happened in few quick chomps. A normal baby would have started crying sooner. If they're story is true: Fell asleep next to baby, left a puppy that is only a few weeks old on the ground, and baby started crying which woke them up... I can see that happening to a lot of people. Even when you don't mean to fall asleep, I remember it being so easy the first month lil J was born. Not to mention, I wouldn't have thought Yuki would do anything if I glanced over before closing my eyes and she was sleeping in a corner and a few months old. But, I doubt they were in the same room like they claim.

This is crazy!

Later in the article it says:

Another veterinarian, Dr. Valri Brown, said if the puppy chewed off the infant's toes, it would not have happened quickly. "It would have to be a period of time — maybe at least an hour," she said.

I don't think this is the whole/true story. I wonder what really happened. I guess if they were sleeping in a different room, the baby could have been crying for quite some time before they woke up.

Or, if the puppy was trying to nurse the toes before it starting chewing, it's possible that from the sucking the baby's toes were numb so there was a delayed reaction from the baby?

I'm flabbergasted!
Oh wow. Yeah, I missed that part. Okay, I just read half of it, posted on another site.

That definitely sounds like bad parenting. 100%!!!!
The puppy doesn't look that old and the baby was only 1 month...sounds irresponsible just to have both at the same time.

I wonder if they hadn't fed the puppy in awhile and it was hungry...and one thing led to another?

I feel sorry for both the child and the dog...neither deserved the parents they ended up with.
...this little piggy went to puppy...
OMG Ron...your so BAD!

What an awful story. I just don't see it happening like they said it did.
Who knows though. (shrugs shoulders)
Poor baby, poor puppy... rotten horrible parents... JMO
That absolutely brought tears to my eyes AND made me nauseous and you all know I am not the sappy type. I just cannot imagine anything so horrible.

BAD RON BAD
Boy, they should've fed that dog.
To me, sleeping on a mattress in the living room sounds odd in itself. That makes me think that maybe drug use was involved or something like that...

Very sad, though

My bet is that they were passed out - drugs, booze, something. If you're in a nornal state of sleep and the baby cries, you wake up. Heck, I don't have children of my own and I'm a really deep sleeper but when my nephews cry, I wake up.

That child should be taken away from them. But people will make it all about the puppy. All about the PIT BULL puppy. How unfair. And how horrible for the child.

I second that! Jeez!!!!!
Don't you think the baby would have been SCREAMING not just crying?

I've heard the difference in the doctor's office...
Those parents.......not the right word to use here I know, HAD to be bombed out of their minds on meth or some such not to be conscious to hear their baby's screams of pain!!

I'm sorry, they lose the baby and they both get sterilized for life, so they never breed again!!! Yes, the parents. Anyone who abuses a child goes to jail and gets neutered/spay.

In fact I'm coming around to believe everyone over 12 gets a procedure to keep from making babies.......and it can't be reversed until they are 30. Grinch.

Hey, some of us young parents are good ones. :) lol

I can't imagine how they didn't hear the baby screaming. Poor little girl. :(
Very sad! :(

After reading this story, why would they arrest the parents for desertion, but state that they were sleeping with the child right behind them? Negligence yes, maybe, but desertion???? Doesn't make sense to me.

I agree that the pup could've numbed the toes by nursing on them. If the childs feet weren't ticklish it would have been relaxing. Possibly putting the child into a deeper sleep, then only stirring its sleep as it chewed, rather than chomping and waking the baby. Maybe the sucking in between could've lessened the pain, like applying pressure to a wound. These are awful tiny little toes compared to a puppies mouth full of sharp teeth. I don't know, but its horrible.

Don't be too quick to judge these two without knowing the complete facts. My thoughts are that if it really happened the way they said it did, how horrible it is on them now, what they're going through. Leaving the puppy out was a mistake, a costly one, but who'd ever thought that would happen. So many needless, yet innocent mistakes happen in life. But, then again, what are the facts??? God be with them in either case.
That is pretty crazy!! I can't imagine not hearing my babies cry!! (Although I do sympathize with the sleep deprivation of the first few months) But as to getting toes chewed off?!?!?!?! That sounds a little more like a passed out type moment! It makes me soo sad to hear about babies and children getting hurt. I can't even watch some parts of like the discovery channel when they show times when kids were also killed in wars! And it's not even really happening at that time! I guess it's the mother in me......
I dont wanna judge anyone too harshly knowing how tired I was when I first had my son and daughter, maybe it did happen the way they said it, I just think it sounds a little fishy.

Now they are saying it might have been the ferrett not the dog.

The CNN article states that the mom is blaming the ferret, the dad still blames the puppy. But it doesn't matter which animal did it - the charges are not going to change. Can you believe these people fell asleep with 2 unrestrained animals around their 2 children - a baby and a 2 year old?
That whole place sounds like a real classy joint. Mattress in the living room, ferret running loose, baby and 6 week old baby pretty much unattended. I wonder if there's any room for me there? The living conditions sound spectacular.
Can't the authorities just examine the poop of the puppy and the ferret to determine which one did it? They could even match the dna to that of the baby.

..... I've been watching way too many CSI reruns lately.....
Yeah, real classy!!! I can't believe someone would not hear their child crying right next to them!!!

I am not a fan of taking children away from their parents, so maybe they can do drug tests and take steps to make sure that the parents get help with their child until they are over the "hump".
