How much space and attention does OES need?

How much space and attention does an OES need? I've heard that they don't need a lot of space but need a lot of attention. How much attention do they need beside the grooming part? Would an 1/8 of an acre yard be big enough? Can they be left alone for many hours everyday?

Hi there, my opinion for what it's worth.

Regarding space, it would be nice if you had fenced space for your OES to play in your yard. It is important to spend at least 30 min. a day in serious aerobic exercize with your dog -- that means fetch, frisbee, long walks, jogging, etc. Left on their own, the OES will not exercize itself. There are folks who have OES in apartments, but they do make sure to have daily routines that include long walks, running, etc.

How much attention do they need? In terms of grooming, quite a lot. In terms of interaction with humans, quite a lot. We refer to OES as "velcro dogs" because they like to be stuck next to you as much as possible and be part of everything you are doing.

Not sure how long you are thinking of leaving the dog alone during the day. If you work an 8 hr. day, the dog will absolutely be ready for your attention when you get home. OES who do not have enough attention, exercize or activity can exhibit separation anxiety (just like any other breed).

In my experience, OES are not an "aloof" breed, that greets you nicely and goes off to do their own thing. OES want to interact with you as much as possible.
I agree. Our 10 month old sheepie is very much a "velcro" dog. He is left alone during the day and a family member spends a couple of hours in the middle of the day with him and it never seems to be enough. Our Sebastian is VERY clingy and still follows us wherever we go - he even waits outside the bathroom door until we're finished! He also has trouble calming down if my husband and I are in separate rooms. He always looks for a spot to relax where he can see the two of us at the same time. The only time he can get a nap in is when we're on the couch together watching TV and he's at our feet. They are very loveable, but do require A TON of your attention
I just found this site and was reading your question about space for an OES. I live in a townhome, but walk Frosty at least twice a day, for a min. of 1/2 mile each time. When he was a pup I would walk him a min of 1 mile twice a day. If your pup does not get enough activity he will be more then a handfull.
