Finished the quilt

Okay once pic's are approved I will be able to post them. But I have to admit I'm not very proud of this one. I seemed to have alot of difficulty. I wish I could take a course, buy proper tools, and get a good machine.

I hand cut every square, so none are perfectly matched...making it difficult to match the seams. I did sew all the seams flat but the corners of each square still make that bump. I did use extra batting, making it difficult to do the edge. So I hand sewed the edges...talk about a big pain.

So I am not sure I think this is gift worthy. I might just keep it for our house. And go buy her something else. I have done better, even hubby agrees this is NOT my best work....but the last one I made I used cotton squares. I thought the corduroy would be okay...

Anyways I am done, time to clean up the mess. Next project, a magnet game for Madelyn's homework project. We need to make a board game, and instead of using dice you have to go fishing with a magnet and catch a fish, and then follow the instructions. The goal is to make something unique and you MUST use magnets.

Can't wait to see it!! I love quilting, back "in the day" I used to crank out a quilt a year or more. My kids and my step kids all took quilts off to college. I wish I had the energy now that I had then!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have been off work for a few months and tought I would make a quilt. Never did this before. I cut and sewen the entire thing by hand. It is for a queen size bed. Waiting for hubby to fix the quilting fram that I just got off of e-bay. I will try to do pics of the top.
I don't know what a quilting frame is....I just wing it. Times like this I wish I had a mom to have been able to teach me.

My dad not so much into sewing...however he tried to teach me how to skin coyotes, and beavers...when fur was popular. He doesn't trap anymore....this was over 20 years ago, I was around 10.
The fram holds the top, bating and backing together and nice and snug so you can get a nice even stitching lines. I will try to post some pics on my camera. I am learning this on my own to. I never had anyone to teach me.
You still need to baste before putting on the frame though.

I love my quilt frame, I have a large oval on a stand that I can sit in front of the TV and quilt with. I have a quilt in there now that I've been working on for about 2 years.......I told you I've slowed down!!!!!!!!!!!
Then you hand sew...or a special sewing machine? I'd love to see a picture of this.

I was at the fabric store and wanted to try the OLFA cutting tools. Might help make my squares more even. But they are quite expensive.
Well I have the type that you put the whole quilt. The back, batting and top are roled on poles and come together where you qilt it. I control the tension of each layer.
I don't have all that fancy cutting stuff either. My tools are a pencil, small scissors, ruler, pins, needle and thread. I would really like to try those rotary cutters. All are exspensive. But I chose to make mine this way. I love making things the old fashioned way. I have a nice sewing machine. Just rather do it by hand.
wow you guys are incredible!! My idea of a good quilt is one that is on sale from pottery barn 8O ...

when my mom was out here over thanksgiving, she brought my Christmas gift from last yr...( it took her almost a yr to make)...my duvet cover that is a floral on one side and dragonflies on the other side...it is completely reversable, with a 60'' upholstery zipper ..easy in and out of the comforter...she matched up the flowers and the dragonflies...had to sew by hand, because as she said " the darn fabric kept bunching together"..

she made a coordinating bed skirt and 2 king size pillow shams too... I have to take a picture...it is THE most georgeous set I have ever seen...it truely is a custom set and looks way more expensive....

I love my mom...she is incredible...(and a good sewer :D too)...wish i had the patience, but I have a new favorite friend...stitch witchery....all you need is an iron 8O
I used a cardboard square, placed it on top and cut the fabric around it. I want to get the hard plastic square.

As a wedding gift, an elderly family member made us this quilt. Very old fashioned....even used old clothing pieces (polyester shirts/skirts/pants)....anyways we got 2 of them about a double size. We absolutely LOVE these quilts. It couldn't be more perfect. Ihave no idea...and don't want to open it up...but I wish I could learn to do it like that.

I haven't heard if she's passed away, but I believe she is in her 90's.
Can't wait to see a picture Darcy!!!!
Here it is....it probably doesn;t show the detail (mistakes)...but they are there a plenty...it's alright, but I just don't know if I am proud enough of it to give it...she is not family...LOL.

I think it looks beautiful! I looked at it close-up and didn't see any of the "mistakes".

What if you run it through the wash & dryer a couple of times? That might soften some of the seams and hide the "mistakes".
It is LOVELY. Quilts are not supposed to be "perfect", if you want a perfect quilt you get a store bought one. She will appreciate the time and love you put into it, imperfections and all.
I definitely think you should give it to her. The fact that you took the time and effort to do this for her is awesome. And I looked at the picture close up and it looks great.

Bet it beats all the candy and lotions she gets for Christmas.

You did a great job.

(Reminder to self - must go play with Parker to get a quilt made.  )
If someone gave me a hand-made quilt, I wouldn't care if it all the imperfections in the world. The fact that someone took the time to make something for me would touch me more than anything. Give her the quilt. She will cherish it.
I agree with Paula,

In this world of mass produced goods, a handmade item is something to treasure, imperfections and all!
You guys are sweet.

I'll show it to hubby, after all this was his idea (for me to make the quilt)...I have enough squares left to make a pillow, and fringe to make it look shaggy, like a lion mane.
I agree, getting a hand made quilt is the kind of gift you cherish all your life.

This is the one that I have but together. The back will be a cream color with a different shade of cream that is a florial print. There is another pic in my gallery. Not smart enough to post both.
Bev, You did a great job. I like to make quilts like that for babies too. That reminds me I haven't done one in AGES.....time to get all the fabric out...

bge, You also did a fabulous job. It is going to be beautiful when you finish it...I start a lot of projects but seem to never finish them.....
It's beautiful :)

What a nice job... now you're making me want a sewing machine...
that is absolutely wonderful!! I am soo impressed....hmmm, its got me thinkin'....

can you make a quilt using stitch witchery????
bge....that is amazing, I can't believe you have done that much work by hand. It must be very time consuming.

I do my squares with the machine, and I would make the quilt bigger if I didn't have an arm in the way.

I appreciate all the nice comments, makes me feel better. I just hope she is a person who likes this stuff. I am worried since I found out another mom has "hired" her mother to make a whole layette of things, and the moms (group of them) have chipped in their money to pay for it.

I kinda feel like I am up against a professional, and I want to feel like mine is okay. What I do know is her theme is safari, brown's and yellows. They are making their stuff with duckies...but this grandma does this as a side business...people pay her for her stuff.
Bev,
It looks great! Don't worry about being up against a professional.
I am sure she'll love your gift.
Daisie, I think it's WONDERFUL!!! My favorite gift was a handmade quilt I got for lil J. It wasn't professional at all, but it's still what I chose to use (instead of what the crib bedding came with)!!!
I got the rotary cutter, a green mat and the clear plastic ruler for Christmas one year. Well worth it.
Check out the local library for some quilting books. Georgia Bonesteel wrote a series of books and I learned from them.
The quilts are beautiful.
The quilts are beautiful!
You made that????? WOWZERS!!!!

I'm so impressed!! The person receiving it will be thrilled to get it.

Marianne and the boys
Your quilt is beautiful :D ! I am sure she will be thrilled to receive your beautiful quilt as a gift. I am also sure she will appreciate all the hard work you put into it. Be proud!
Anyone can buy things with money but yours comes with love.
Both those quilts are just beautiful!

Bev, I completely agree that you should the quilt to the teacher. I think she'll be thrilled with it.

I have a quilt from each of my grandmothers that they hand made for me. They are among my most cherished possessions. :hearts:

I still remember going to see my grandmother and calling out to her as I entered her house. She'd be upstairs in the guest room where her quilting frame was hung from the ceiling. She kept the quilt on there until it was finished and when she wasn't working on it, would hoist it back up so you could walk underneath it.
It is beautiful and you gave me some great idea's. I used to hand quilt when I had more time years ago it seems.

For the boys graduation I am going to send squares to everyone in the family ( a lot of us sew ) and have them do a square for a quilt. They can take it to college with them. Thanks for the great idea's you spawn in my head.
The quilts are both wonderful!
I would definitely give the quilt to Parker's teacher. :D
The quilt is just absolutely beautiful. I did one years ago on the traditional Amish designs on the quilt, took me 7 years of hand stiching and quilting it, Nothing ever gets done in a hurry at my place.

I was so proud when I finished it, now it is at my mums place with all the familys names quilted into it and will add grankids etc etc and hand it down in the family.

They are so lovely and Parkers teacher will have something to treasure and hand down in her family too. :D

I love your idea of a family quilt with everyone doing a block, will be something to cherish and made with love by your family :D

Here! Here! Even Pottery Barn is too expensive.....any more Big Lots! is looking good.

I own two sewing machines, both Berninas. They haven't been used in 20 years. No patience and I don't want the mess around. Last house had a room I could devote strictly to sewing...it was "Mavelous"

Hats off to all you creative ladies.

s.
I showed it to hubby, he likes the way it turned out..I "saved" it...haha.

I will be at the school volunteering this week and will bring it in. She's putting together a poetry-cafe, where the kids will read poetry to us and we get tea and cookies.

I will make some cookies. It should be a fun thing.
