Chili swallowed something

Chili had swallowed something that didn't quite make it down friday night. She was breathing funny after it happened. I patted her on the back, she coughed and then layed down to sleep.
Saturday morning I found her sleeping on the dining room. The little guy had been sleeping near her and probably pissed her off.
She ignored me all day and didn't touch any food. At night I gave her some rib meat that she ate. Her breathing seemed a little weird but ok.
This morning she seemed ok.. Went outside, peed, took a big drink of water. The layed on the couch all day. This evening she was panting for no reason...it was cool in the house. The looked stressed out so off to the Emergency Vet.
$458 dollars that I didn't have in the first place was spent on X-rays.

Chili has something caught in her esophagus. She needs to have an endoscopic tube put down her throat to try to remove whatever is there. If that doesn't work the'd have to cut her open. I say ok..
They said sorry we don't do that here. She needs to see a Dr that specializes in using a scope.

She hasn't eaten since last night. The Vet said I should get this done with in the next two days.

I have no $ to do this. I am so stressed out.
Tomorrow I have to call around and get prices for the procedure.
If the cost is crazy I cannot do it. I can barely afford to pay my credit card bills as it is (the joys of being disabled and not having an income :( )

Now I have to try to get some sleep.

Elissa, I hope you sre getting some sleep. I just read your post while I am at work.
Do you know what it is that's stuck? Is there any chance it will dislodge?
Prayers for you and Chili!
That's horrible. I just sent you a PM.

They said it looked like it may be plastic...which I just don't understand since Chili only eats food and treats.
I asked if there was a chance she might throw it up. They said since it had been there since Friday Night the doubted it. Said she would have thrown up by now. They said there was also air in her stomach caused by the obstruction in the esophagus. They didn't tell me if I should try to feed her or not. I am a nervous wreck... my hands are shaking.
Thanks for the prayers, we need them.

Thank You Vegas!
Can you try the Heimlich? The first aid web site that was posted here earlier is real good. Maybe you have a medical friend who could try it? I would be too nevous to do it on my own dog :( , unless it was a life threatening emergency.

:ghug:
I think it may be lodged there. I actually tried to stick my finger down her throat to make her gag on Friday night with no luck.
I would be too scared trying the Heimlich.
I'm sorry you and Chili are going through this....
Did your vet refer you to someone? Have you called around to see if anyone will let you make payments?
The many joys of dog ownership.... I hope she's ok.
Elissa --That is very scary and I am so sorry poor Chili and you are going through this. It is an awful feeling not being able to help our pooches. I like Stacey's idea of finding a vet that accepts a payment plan. Good luck! Hoping for a good outcome. . .
Sorry to hear about Chili. I wouldn't try doing the Heimlich if your vet didn't do it already.

I hope you can find a vet that will do a payment plan for you.
Sorry about Chili. I just assumed that an Emergency vet was capable of doing any procedure. If they weren't going to do anything you could have gone to your regular vet - the bill would probably have been lower for the x-rays. I truly am sorry. Hang in there. We will be praying for you and Chili.
Oh, poor Chili! And poor Elissa!! I can't imagine the panic you're feeling right now. I'm sure a vet will work with you on payments. Please keep us posted!!
Oh goodness! I'm so sorry and hope you can find a vet who accepts payment plans. I find it odd that the emergency vet couldn't do a scope.
Poor Chili. I hope everything works out.
Me too! Amazes me how fast and what they can get into. :(
We went to my SIL's Vet this morning.
He did not do the scope as the one he has is rigid and he's only be able to see what was there, but wouldn't be able to get it.
He said that the expansion in her esophagus may have been caused by a birth defect as it is near the entrance to the stomach. He said it is possible that something is stuck there, but the barium did get by on last night's x-rays and todays. The only thing I can think of is she ate a Greenie right before this started. He said if it is a Greenie it will disinegrate eventually.
He gave me meds for her. Something to relax the esophagus, a pain reliever and anti-biotic. If she doesn't start eating and keeping it down, we have to go to the specialist tomorrow to do the scope. And if that doesn't work I am going to have to put her down. The Vet said that surgery for her problem would be major and starting in the $5000 range. 8O
She did eat a bit of canned food earlier.... I am praying she can keep it down!! :plead:
Oh Elissa, we will keep our fingers crossed that the barium and time will do the trick. Canned food in small quantities sounds good. Good luck and keep us posted.
Oh elissa I am so sorry to hear about chilli. :(

Did they suggest anything to make her throw up and maybe dislodge it that way?

I hope all works out well and you and chilli are in our thoughts.

Wondering also if there is a Vet training hospital near you that can do the procedure if it is needed, they usually have reduced costs compared to other vet hospitals.

Hope everything turns out OK. :(
Elissa: :( I am so sorry to hear about this terrible ordeal Chilli and you are going through. I'll keep my fingers crossed and keep you both in my prayers. :plead: :hearts:
Elissa, I'm sorry about all this! Poor Chili.
I hope the meds work for Chili. Best wishes and healing Basset drool from Simon.
I also hope the meds work for Chili. I'm so sorry about all this.
How is Chili doing tonight? Does she gag or cough at all? Any signs it might be disolving or moving in either direction?
If it is a greenie, would giving her warm water to drink help?
Thanks Everyone for worrying about my little girl.

She didn't throw up the food I gave her earlier (but only had like 2 tablespoons) and she drank some water.
The Vet wants me to feed her food that would fit through a straw. I just mixed some can food with water until it was thin. She is still breathing very shallow or panting and shaking.

Lisa, no suggestion by the Vets on how to help dislodge it. :(
Oh lord Elissa - I am so so so sorry. My prayers are with and Chili. I hate Greenies and I don't care that they say the formula has changed.

You guys are in my prayers.

:ghug:
OH E.. just catching up on this.. I hope Chili will be alright..

I will be thinking of you...keep us posted.

I'm just finding this thread this morning and am so very sorry to hear what's going on with Chili. Is she any better today?
Oh goodness, Elissa, that sounds awful! I feel so bad for Chili - and you, I know how scary it is when there is something wrong with your baby. Hopefully it will eventually dislodge or disintegrate enough... Best wishes and sheepie kisses to Chili
My prayers to you and Chili
Poor Chili, how is she doing today?
No change today. She ate a little food earlier and had some water.
I called my sister's vet today she says he can do the scope thing.
I am waiting to hear back. The receptionist seems to think this would be very costly too, though she didn't say how much.
This is so stressful! We went through something similar with our little min pin Tazz almost a year ago - and it was a greenie that stuck too. I wanted to post this again(I have once before) to give you hope! Tazz's did pass through after a few days. I don't know if it dissolved or what, but it went away. We didn't do anything besides give him water, and a little softened food. Maybe the water helped dissolve it enough to pass it.

:hearts: for Chili.
Does she appear to be in pain, Elissa?
E..how is she today? Just got caught up on posts.....
Stacey, I never answered you...sorry.
She will only cough a little bit after eating and drinking.

Dawn, I am glad Tazz was ok. Hopefully the same will happen for Chili.

Tammy, I don't know if she's on pain. They gave me a shot to give her, a combo shot with Antibiotics, a medical to reduce swelling and stop spasms in the Esophagus, and I believe a pain killer. She is moving around more today. She heard me in the pantry and came running.
Well, that sounds promising. If she's active, she must be feeling a little bit better. :)
E, How's Chili doing today?

batonrougesheepies
Wynette,
Thanks for asking. But I am not sure how she is doing today.
She is still asleep in my bed and Little Man is asleep on the floor.

I thought the Sheepies were lazy, but they have been up running around for 2 hrs. Chihuahua's are definitely more lazy.

I'll update when she gets up.
Poor little Chili!!! But it sounds like she's doing at least okay, maybe better, right?? My thoughts are with you, Elissa!
Poor little girl! I hope she gets to feeling better soon, and whatever it is passes!
Well she is back to eating like a champ.... still canned food though.
She was looking at a piece of dry, but didn't touch it.
A little more active too.
My Parent's came to babysit Hayley while I went to the Dr, and when the arrived Chili came running out to great them.
I hope she will continue to improve. :plead:
Yay! It must be all the people rooting for her helping - and Tazzie too! I hope this is a sign of it passing through. :D :D
Get better Chili! :ghug:
That's good news, I hope whatever was lodged has passed...
:D Good news.......keep it up chilli! :ghug:
As of yesterday afternoon she is back to eating solid food with no problems. :yay:
Had to have been a Greenie that was stuck.
Oh, what wonderful news!!!

:excited: :cheer:
Wow, that wound up being one expensive Greenie, huh? I take it they won't be making any more appearances in your household?

I'm glad to hear she's doing better!
Oh ELISSA, I am so sorry I missed this post. It seems like the week has been so busy I've barely been able to do more than a fast check.

HOW SCAREY!!!!!!!!!!!! But I am glad she seems to be better.

I HATE GREENIES    Was this a "new" "improved" greenie or was it one of the "old" ones???.
Thank you to everyone for your support. :ghug:

Jill, That certainly was one very expensive Greenie. The Greenies are officially GONE!!

Ginny, it was the new formula. She ate it too quickly and it got lodged in her esophagus.
I stopped with the greenies when I saw awhole one in Laika's poop.
Very bad news http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?t=11191
