dog under table and/or chair

The dog gets under the dining table or under a chair of someone eating. He refuses to come out. He growls if he is forced to come out. It is as if he were protecting sheep or something or is in a dog house (which he does not have). Anyone have this same reaction with Old English Sheeepdog or do you know what it means?

Sounds like he's waiting for the greatest reward of them all, dropped human food!

Maybe you should consider crating your dog while the humans eat. there are lots of posts and a whole section devoted to crate training on this site.

I'm sure others will hop on in with their ideas, too!
Thanks for a reply but it does not go to the point: Do you understand this action? It has nothing to do with food. I think it has to be with being with people who are crowed together as sheep would be and the dog senses that it his job to stand guard. However, this is just a wild guess on my part. It's not a question trying to dislodge the dog. He does not bark or attempt to do anything, so it is harmless action but can annoy a guest. I am trying to understand the logic of the action and it seems to me that it has to do with the instincts in this type of dog. Has anyone ever seen this action? Thank you.

In your original post it seemed to be all about when people are eating. That's why I associated it with dropped food.

If someone drop food from the table, does he go after it?
Does he go under tables or chairs that aren't involved in eating?
You mentioned that it's a harmless action, but said in the previous post that he'll bark and growl if you try to get him out. No matter what the reason for him doing it, the barking and growling is a warning sign. What kind of dog is it? Is it a dog that is naturally meant to guard?

I think it may have more to do with food than you think it does. My Komondor, a guarding breed, will guard my food from others. If I'm sitting on the couch eating pizza, he'll growl at the others dogs if they try to approach. He doesn't beg or try to take it, he just considers it his job to keep me safe-- and then, if I am giving away scraps, his position ensures that he's first in line for handouts.

The there's always the possibility that it's just one of those crazy things that dogs do for apparently no reason. All 3 of my dogs have goofy little quirks that I've never taught them but they've developed on their own. I don't know how they came up with the stuff, but they still do it!
