What are YOU cooking?

Anybody else up early cooking? I was up LATE and EARLY. Last night I was in the kitchen til 11:00 and then up again at 5:00. BUT the turkey is in the oven and all the sides are done

There will be only 3 of us for dinner today but Doug's children will come on Saterday so my hope is to have LOTS of leftovers and not have to cook on Saterday.

I have a 24 lb turkey and a Cashew Carrot loaf (meatless for ME) along with all the usual. Corn caserole, sweet potato souffle, the "gotta have it" green bean caserole, squash, Cranraspberry jello and Apple pie. The only thing I have left to do is the mashed ptoatoes and set the table. I'd love to crawl back in bed but the boys won't let me!!

Have a great day everybody AND DON'T EAT TOOOOOO Much

Busy, busy, busy....

I want to go back to bed too. *yawn* I worked late last night and have to be back at work this morning... no cooking here though!
I hope you enjoy the result of your hard work :)
Today I am making several batches of Biscotti's. Chocolate Biscotti, Orange Biscotti and Peppered Coffee Biscotti

No turkey for us...we had ours in October. Last weekend we had relatives from the states and we had 18 people over for lunch, we had spaghetti, meatballs, sausage and veal shanks. This weekend other relatives are in from the states and on saturday we will have 19-24 people (some havent bothered to reply to the invite) I'll be making a ham and roast beef. No turkey as I got sick last time I ate turkey so I am not making it for quite a while
Kim,
I LOVE Biscotti!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've never made it, is it hard tomake???? Will you share your recipe???????????????
Last night I made cornbread dressing, pecan pie, strawberry pie, and pralines. This morning turkey has been fried and the turducken is in the oven baking. The jambalaya is made. And all the other side dishes are in preparation.

And somewhere I need to find time to mop the floor to remove 4 sets of muddy paw prints everywhere.

Does anyone else have sheepdogs "guarding" the turkey just in case it decides to make a run for it? I am pretty sure they would be more than willing to "jump" on it.
I know what you mean, I'm looking at my floor wondering if I should mop now, wait or say TO HEACK WITH IT!!!

Do you assemble your own Turduckin or get it already assembled???
We were up late last night and up early again this morning. Our garbage disposable backed up last night at 6:00 and Tim tried to clean it out and remove the pipes but it was beyond the trap so the plumber had to be called out on an emergency call (yes too darn expensive) and route in the main pipes to clear the problem. He did not show up until midnight! 8O It was supposed to be at 9:30.

That was my third night in a row of bed after 2:00 in the morning and up about 3 1/2 hours later. I am hosting Thanksgiving today and am supposed to be napping right now while the turkey is cooking but I am too keyed up. So I will probably hit the wall and crash and burn right when Grey's Anatomy is starting. We were supposed to go out last night with the boy's who are home from school to see Spamalot but due to the plumbing emergency that didn't happen.

Back to the original subject - cooking :) I host this family holiday every year. I am cooking the turkey now (in a throwaway pan). I made my day before mashed potatoes yesterday and they will just need to bake (no messy pan) and I set the table Tuesday night. Green beans to go in the oven right before. My mom and dad bring dressing, pies and sausage. I'm Polish on my mom's side and this is the family favorite even for all our Irishmen - LOL My brother and nephew are bringing the salad. So it only gets hectic right before the meal and then doing clean up. My other brother and his family are only stopping by on the way to the in-laws to visit and eat Polish sausage.

We eat early at 1:00 for all family holidays. Then just munch on leftovers late in the evening after everyone has left. What time do all of you sit down to eat?
I am shooting for 2:00!!
Biscotti is not hard to make...just time consuming because you have to bake them in a loaf shape...cool them and then cut them and bake them again.
If I can make them....anyone can make them. I HATE TO COOK...there I said it...I feel better now
Sure I'll share the recipe...its not mine anyway...when we bought this house last year, the people who lived here invited us for a christmas feast and they made us biscotti....we loved it so much I asked them for the recipe. I don't use the nuts the recipe calls for as I have a daughter that is allergic. They taste just fine with or without the nuts.
I'll post the recipes in the cooking section of the forum.
Enjoy!

When we have turkey we eat around 2:00pm too....just make sure your bird is really cooked... My mom took hers out of the freezer days ahead of time and it wasnt properly thawed and then not properly cooked 8O that is why I was so sick after our thanksgiving. :x
I'm baking my biscotti right now tooooooooo!!!!!!!!

Mine is cranberry and pisctacio (holiday colors)!

Tasker's mom, no... biscotti is not hard!!! It isn't on the easiest level, but there aren't any difficult steps ...just tips and tricks to make things easier. I make it every year, and it was one of the first recipes handed down to me! My husband gets so sick of it because I always make it as a gift to people. :D

I got up at 3 a.m. to start cooking. I hate that we're not eating until later today though. I grew up eating Thanksgiving for lunch ...and then leftovers for dinner, but we'll be eating it for dinner today (but I have to arrive early).

I'm so hungry!!!!!!! I got up and ran on the treadmill then followed it up with an entire box of snackwell cookies. 8O

I'm baking my brocolli, cheese, and rice casserole, green bean casserole, homemade rolls, and desserts.
MRS J, if you remember YOU were SUPPOSED to share YOUR recipe for Biscotti, LAST YEAR

I'd love to make some, maybe for Christmas!!!

I did 60 min on the eliptical this morning in some vain attempt to ward off the extra calories I'm going to consume today
Oh yeah!!! I'll get around to it!!!!!!!!! promise.

Yay for exercising this morning. I also did it so I can take in more today. ...just didn't know I'd eat an entire box of cookies the second I got off.

My body is starting to shut down. I got up too early and am tired. Wish I didn't already shower and do my hair/makeup. With my luck, if I take a nap, I'll rub my eye and have a glob of mascara down my face (has happened sooooooo many times).
Ok Ginny....the biscotti recipes are in the Cooking section.....good luck
We have a big family meal planned - about 40+ people! We pass the location around - this year at one of Todd's brother's. He has 7 siblings - and all but one live nearby. We will eat at 4pm this year d/t work schedules.
The host family makes the turkey, dressing and mashed potatoes. The rest gets assigned. We are bringing goose (Todd's hunting contribution) and dressing, 2 pumpkin pies (from our own pumpkins), green bean casserole, fruit ambrosia salad.
Luckily with the late eat time, I didn't have to get up early. Todd has his goose ready to go in the oven, I am in the middle of making my pies.

Family has already been warned I get the TV at noon to watch the dog show. Dogs, birds and fish have all been fed and taken care of.

The host family lives only 15 miles away, so it is a easy day. Can't wait to hit the food and graze all day! We talk, watch movies, play cards and draw names for the family Christmas gift exchange.

Thanks for the biscotti recipes - I can't wait to try them. We love biscotti here!
WOW, I amazed everyone eats so early. I always thought dinner meant around 6ish...I would never get up early to make anything. I love my sleep too much LOL.

However I am a nut case when it does come to that day if we are hosting....doesn't matter if it's 2 people or 20, I become an, analrentive freak...but once guests arrive I feel okay and try to relax to enjoy their company.
I don't know about the rest of you but I am EXHAUSTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Turkey is almost done, the sides are ready to pop in the oven, potatos are ready to boil, table is set and I WANT A NAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Doug just decided to clean out his car, brought an arm load of coffee cups in and dumped them in the sink    I snarled at him 8O

I'll be so tired by the time dinner is ready I won't be able to eat!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I made my contributions to the meal last night.

My MIL requested that I make my Yummy Potato recipe. I guess it was a hit last year. I also decided to make my "Elissa's Famous Cheesecake".
Hayley stuck a spoon in it right after I took it out of the over.
But I was able to fix it. I had put it on the counter while I was searching for my second over mitt so I could put it on the pie rack to cool. I hear YUM!! and turn around to see my little girl with a spoonful of cheesecake.
Mine you I did not leave it on the edge of the counter. She was on her tippy toes and was reaching for more with her spoon.
Well at least I know that she approves. lol
I was up late last night...last night I made the homemade bread, green bean casserole, the squash, and the pearl onion souffle. We arent eating until 6 ish, but so far today Ive made the stuffing and peeled the potatoes. Turkey is in the sink having a nice bath...waiting to be stuffed...

The table is set and the house is clean....for now....Im tired too....and hungry....
We aren't eating until around 6 this year due to work schedules. One sister is a nurse and she has to work until 5 and the other sister is a doctor and is on call until 5.

I am so wiped out. I haven't even eaten yet and I am ready for a nap already. Trying to conserve my strength to get up at 3 or 4 a.m. to go SHOPPING!
believe it or not.....I have never had green bean casserole and we lived in NY for 14 years when I was younger...when we celebrated Thanksgiving in NY we usually went to a friends house...they were Italian. They sorta adopted us Canucks...it was a real pig out there. We had turkey and all the fixins and then we also had lasagna, brachiole(sp?) and veal. Then at 11pm all the food came out again for another round! Phew....makes me full thinking about it now

That is almost UNAMERICAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well my dinner is ready but GUESS WHAT, Doug's mother is late

I'm going to be REALLY cranky before this day is over!!!
But Ginny.....I am Canadian

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAH     well then, that EXPLAINS IT!!
Hmmmm. maybe I should try to make a green bean casserole for my dinner I am having on Saturday.....I am sure my hubby's Canadian relatives havent had it either
It would go nicely with the ham and roast beef I am serving.
Yes it would!! It's really quite easy and quite tasty!!
Can you send me the recipe....I don't even know what is in it except for the green beans of course.
I sent it!

Doug's mother is now 1/2 an hour late. My food will either be cold or dried out. I seem to remember she did this to me at Christmas. Good think I held off cutting the turkey.
I HATE late people when I'm cooking!!!! Messes me all up!

You must try green bean casserole! It was always a favorite growing up.
Oh don't get me started on the inlaws
only 10:30 a.m. here. feels like i've been up forever. i forgot to buy onions!!!! it's way too cold to get some too. oh well!!!!!!!! hopefully it doesn't take away from the taste too much.
The fur folks rudely awakened us far too early (before the alarm went off) at 4:30 am. In the kitchen by 5:30 for coffee and danish to start the day's cooking. We expect about 20-25 two-leggers in addition to 14 sheepies for turkey dinner this afternoon.
We made up some turkey hash (ground turkey mixed with rice) for the kids as well as some diced veggies. No gravy though...cleaning fur faces is too much work!
The table will be groaning under the weight of several 20+ pound birds, ham, roast beef and veggie lasagna together with all the usual side dishes. I broke down and went to the bakery for store-bought pies (cherry, apple & pumpkin).
By the time we are finished later today, we'll probably be too tired to eat (vbg)
Happy Bird Day to All for San Francisco by the Bay...
Well, she finally arived over an hour late without the slightest indication that she knew or cared  But she has now gone home and I can kick back and take a deep breath til the weekend when I have to do it all over agian for his kids. They are never on time either!
Ginny that is so aggravating - just enjoy the evening now that they are gone

Whew that is a houseful!!!! I know what you mean about being too tired to eat, I never really enjoy Thanksgiving til leftovers the next day!!! I did give Tasker some of the boiled "parts" (heart gizzard and a liver). The Maltese Forum recommends NOT giving Malts Turkey so poor Ty only got a few green beans and some pupcorn.
Turkey, oyster dressing, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, baked beans, deviled eggs, yeast rolls, pumpkin pie and banana pudding. YUM YUM

For habitual late arrivals: Tell them dinner will be an hour earlier than the actual time you want to eat. I usually tell them the time "and" "We'll wait on you like one hog waits on another." They get the idea, if not, they find out when they get here. I reheat once, after that they're on their own.

I've found that many arrive late to avoid helping, and others leave early to avoid clean up. I resolved that one too. Years ago I told my younger siblings, "I had to make the mess. NO ONE leaves until its cleaned up."
Pam (mouthypf)
I made a turkey, sweet potato casserole, rolls, green bean casserole, cole slaw, cornbread dressing, corn salad, sweet potato pie, coconut cake, I don't even remember what all. I spent the last two days cooking. I'm sick so I didn't hardy eat a thing and what I did eat didn't have a taste...lol Oh well...everyone else enjoyed it. :)

I found the squash in the microwave while I was cleaning up  It was REAL squash too, baked and scrapped and mashed. I did it the night before and thre it in the micro wave to warm and forgot about it. I also forgot the rolls!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA that sounds like something I would do..... I always find after smelling all the cooking all day that I don't want to eat...... As for late people.....that is just rude. There is one couple in hubby's family that are late every time....we tell them we want them earlier...they are STILL usually late. We no longer wait....we say...oh we waited 1/2 hour and you didn't show up....we thought you weren't coming.

Thanks Ginny.

That sounds like something I would do! :)
We almost forgot the sweet potatoes and cranberries - they were in the fridge. Most of us already had full plates - we had to get them on round 2!
I hope you are feeling better. My MIL had the same thing - she was so bummed that she couldn't taste any of the good food. She made us laugh - she told us the textures were nice!
