Huge Dilemma

I really don't know what to do. I was just offered another job with a CA firm. It's offering $8000 more and it's much closer to home by about 45 minutes each way. I really don't know what to do, I've already accepted the other job and am scheduled to start there Dec 1. This new offer is sounding so perfect byt I gave my word to the first guy. What do I do. My Mom says take it, my Dad says I gave my word. AAGGHHH. I hate driving especially in the winter and with Edmonton grow and all of these people moving here traffic is becoming a nightmare. I know this is a no brainer but...... I gave my word. Some advise please!

There's no point in keeping your word if you'll just be unhappy and quite a month after they get you trained. Take the one that works out the best for you for your's and your employer's sake.
I would take the one that works best for you, and contact the other one as soon as possible to explain, and thank them anyway etc...
It's doing the same thing for each of them.
I agree with Stacey. Just tell the other place you got a better offer.
I am sure they'll understand.
I'd lay it all out for the Dec 1 employer. Tell them there was
more money offered, shorter drive... Then tell them "I'm sure
a fine company like yours will have no trouble filling the
position."

I agree with the above advice, it happens all the time. You have to go with what works best for you. Hopefully you will be at your new job for a long time so the shorter trip and the increase in pay is enough insentive to accept the second offer. I also think Shellie's response is a great response.
Best of Luck to you which ever you decide.
As soon as possible decline the Company #1 job, but be honest. Maybe Company #1 will counteroffer another $8000 to ensure that you take it.

Good luck.
I'd figure out a way to take the better offer, trying to be as nice as possible to not burn any bridges with the first place, just in case.

It may not be possible, but I'd still take the better offer. It's a ton of money.
Ditto to all of the above!
Same with me...
My Dad just called me and told me to take the new job but when I call this guy stress to him that I am under no circumstances shaking him down for more money, just tell him that I am taking this new position 1. it is closer to home and 2. $8000 is a lot of money.
Good for you. Keep us posted on how this turns out for you.
I completely agree that you should take the job that is best for you. I think i is great that you figured it out before you started. The other company will manage without you. After all, they are already doing so right now! Hope you love the new job.
I'll make it unanimous, take the better job. I don't see any problem doing that since you have not started the other job. It might be different if you had started and they had invested time and money in training you but you have not even started yet.

Presumably you were not the only person interviewed for the position, the organization has plenty of time to offer the position to their "second choice".
If by "a CA firm" you mean California, consider the much (much) higher cost of livingin California than in Canada.
CA Firm is Chartered Accountant
Take the job that is better for you!!!!!

Company loyalty is highly over-rated, and seems to only work one way.....

Plenty of time for them to find another candidate....
It's not that much different from being given a job and six
months later being downsized right out of it. At least you
haven't wasted their time and money tweaking your abilities
to fit their position. Unless you are contractually obligated
I wouldn't worry about loyalty. It is a business decision. You
have to do what is right for you right now. You wouldn't
make an investment if you found out it was a money pit,
even if you gave your word right? This is an investment
in yourself!
Go for it!

Take the job...as someone who just drove today in these snowy conditions...I was a nervous wreck. So the shorter the commute to anything would be my choice.

Good luck, and the others are right I am sure company A had other interviews and have another choice.
What a dillema!!! Yes, take the better offer that is closer to home.
So have you made a decision?

Just thinking of everyone who is travelling to work this morning. At our school the teacher was late, the principal was late (she lives 45 min away on a good day)....Rob was late about 1/2 hour taking the bus.

Anyways hope you are at work all safe and sound today.
Good luck! If you haven't called the first job yet, try to be very careful not to burn any bridges, as Ron said.

Here in Ontario, I think the Chartered Accountancy field is a "small world", so if someone were to anger an employer, other employers might hear about it.

So.... just be very careful to make it as amicable as possible.

Good luck!
Good luck with the new job. I agree with everyone else to take the higher paying closer job and just do it graciously. It would have been a different story if you had already started the other new job. It seems like there is ample time for them to replace you.

Now a days employers will throw you away after years of loyalty. So you have to take your best opportunity and not burn any bridges.
