PLAY STATION3-$2500 Have they lost their minds??????

I just saw a news clip about people camping out for days on end to be the first in line when Play Station 3 goes on sale tomorrow. It happens every year, some carefully planned marketing ploy decides months (years) ahead of time what the "hot" item for the season will be (remember cabbage patch dolls and furbies??). The manufacturer selectively produces a limited quantity all the while using maximum marketing to whip the buying public into a GOTTA HAVE IT frenzy.

It's cold and raining in my area, pouring rain as a matter of fact. But at one local store people have been camped out since Monday waiting for tomorrows opening for a chance to own PLAY STATION 3. The retail price is to b e $600.00.

Meanwhile, as the reporter announced, entreprenuers on Ebay are selling the chance to buy the Play Station 3 (which presumably they are waiting in line for as I type) at much more than the going rate. Out of curiosity I decided to see just what the Play Station 3 is currently listed at on E-bay.............$2500.00 8O 8O 8O 8O Tis the season

Have people lost their ever loving minds??????????????????????????

They're in high demand - you'd be surprised at what people are willing to pay. Jason saw some 360s sell last year for around 5k on ebay since no one had them in stock!
Insane!!! Me being of the right mind.....most of the time anyway. lol
Would never ever pay such a price! Billy wanted PS2 when it came out. I waited about 6 months and lo and behold, the price dropped over $100 .
Evenyone just gets so darn crazy about Brand new products.
I saw this morning where someone tried to rob a group of people that were camping out to buy the PS3. 8O They did not say what happened to the attempted robbers, but I am sure it was not pretty. One of the shoppers refused to give the money to them is all they said. Can you say riot?
Yep, we're waiting. Considering that sony has had to rush to get out the few units they were able to manufacture, which don't even have full capability yet, and the NORMAL price is 700$ for the unit Mike wants... I'm sorry, it's not happening. We both enjoy our gaming time, but I'm not standing in line for something that I can't afford right now anyhow, let alone paying over retail price for!

Nope. We'll wait!
I wouldn't even a pay dollar for a playstation. I feel they are the destruction of society. I see children that all they want to do is play those games and they never read or do their homework. And then they write essays in school about some most violent game that they love. Small children in elementary school should not be playing such graphic games.
These machines should only be for adults and should be monitored by adults if your child is going to play with them. Maybe I am too old to understand about the playstation concept but I would never own one.
Yeah, people have been waiting in line out here for days, including yesterday where we had flooding rains and tornado watches and warnings going on. Crazy! At least the kids in line all brought their homework, at least to pretend they were doing it in case their teachers or parents were watching the news!

I'm not sure adults should have them either. I know several couples in their mid 20s with young children. The dads spend far more time playing video games than they do playing games with their own kids. These guys would never turn off the game unit to play catch or read to their children. It's pathetic.
Yes thei have lost their mainds!!
I have 3 boys in playstation age, so i know :?
This was in our newspaper...
A crowd of about 350 people got a little too eager to buy one of eight new Playstation 3 videogame systems at the Target store at Libbie and West Broad streets last night.

Police had to fire a talcum powder ball to get them to behave.

They quickly got the message. No one was hurt, arrested or asked to leave.

The incident occurred about 10 p.m. as people lined up outside the store. The throng grew unruly and began surging closer to the doors, so Target officials called police, said Henrico police spokesman Lt. Doug Perry.

A police supervisor arrived and ordered the crowd to back up and get in line.

"They didn't listen," Perry said.

So a member of the department's civil disturbance team fired one round of talcum powder on the ground with a paint ball-like gun. "They immediately complied," Perry said.

At the request of police, Target officials handed out voucher tickets for the eight systems they had in stock, and made that clear to the rest of those gathered so they wouldn't have to wait needlessly overnight, said Target manager Bill Kirby.

Until the disturbance, Target officials had planned to hand out the vouchers at 7 this morning, an hour before opening. "Police asked us to issue the vouchers last night for the safety of the guests," Kirby said.

Those who received vouchers returned to the store this morning to purchase the game machines.
Has anyone gone on ebay and looked at the completed sales for a PS3? $44,000 + for one system, $15,000+ for a bunch of systems.

That is out of control. I am sorry nobody needs a PS3 that bad. Insanity.
SICK SICK SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A very sad comentary on the materialism of both the holiday and our society.

OMG. Seriously? That could *almost* pay off my mortgage!
Yeah, the news was talking about people paying $5,000 for them this morning. Crazy. BUT, ...that's just crazy to me. I am just jealous I can't blow that kind of change. Someone like Paris Hilton, etc... can, so it ain't no thang.
Here ya go all you Play Station Fans, here's one ending very shortly that you can snap up........ if you can top the current $4,050.00 Bid 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O

HARTFORD, Connecticut (AP) -- Two armed thugs tried to rob a line of
people waiting for the new PlayStation 3 game system to go on sale early
Friday and shot one man who refused to give up his money, authorities said.

It was about 3 a.m. when the two gunmen in Putnam, a town of about 9,000
residents in northeast Connecticut, confronted 15 to 20 people standing
outside a Wal-Mart store and demanded money, said State Police Lt. J. Paul
Vance.
I heard that on the news last night and was horrified with that and with all the sotries of riots that happened at stores that had paly stations for sale. I think the saddest part were the interviews with people who actually purchased the device, the Holy Grail of Happiness. I simply cannot imagine ones entire life revolving around A TOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Then there was this ad I found yesterday on a local classifieds...

"New Playstation 3 for sale Brand new Playstation 3 for sale and I'm asking what it's worth. it cost 752.38 with tax (no tax 659.98). Please e-mail me. Thanks. email ....(11/17/2006 10:12:57 AM)"

That seems so strange! Why would they only ask what it's worth, the stores will run out within days, if not hours, and then they could have sold it for much more.

I think the whole thing is insane.
My husband and kids are all into video games, and we do have several game systems, but we don't usually run out and get the latest as soon as it comes out. We'll wait til the price drops and then get it.
Same with the new Nintendo Wii.
They were camped out at the wal-mart in the little town I live in :!: This reminds me of the Cabbage Patch doll craze in the 1980's. At thetime my daughter was little, and hills dept. store had them advertised on sale for 19.99, so my mom and I went up, it was in Elmira N.Y. We went at 6 in the morning, store did not open until noon. We were third in line, women were fighting, they picked up a metal bike rack and aand threw it, fighting, it was scary
. We ended up having police escort through the store, you picked up the doll, then they led you to the check out and then to your car. :twitch:
There was a riot in Orlando, and two women were trampled and one man literally ran into a pole and knocked himself out when they were running into the store. If I'm not mistaken, this was to have a "shot" at just getting a ticket to get one of these things. That didn't even guarantee you to get one.

I do know they only made 400,000 for the holiday season.

We also saw footage of people camping out in front of walmart and best buy for 3-4 days as well.

As far as insanity goes, people will pay anything to make their children happy....it's a shame people will do this specifically to make money off of needy people whom they know are desperate.

It just comes to show that people can be animals. The corporate people are evil too....

Atari was the best anyways!! Especially Pitfall!!!

Sorry, if I personally had a week to wait in line, I would try to flip the sucker on ebay too! I think it is insane that a parent will actually spend that much money on their kid! My parents actually made our Christmas presents as kids which I guess really alters my perspective on gifts.
I think the hype on the games consols is just ridiculous, as soon as it comes out there is another model to supersede it within 12 months. I can tell you we have had everything from Atari (anyone remember that one?) to Nintendo to playstations when the kids were growing up. My son sold his Playstation 2 last year and now sticks to DVD's and Games etc on the computer, you can't keep up with the technology so having the latest and the best is a waste as something new is always around the corner.

What happened to the simple things in life that amuses kids and does not cost a fortune? Too much emphasis now on kids sitting on there backsides in front of a screen to keep them occupied, get them outside running around, playing and interacting with others not a machine
I quit playing games some time ago, I used to be a game freak. Now I just don't have time for doing so. I had all the consoles that existed until PS2 came out, so I understand the frenzy about it. If you like video games, it's a must, but I would not pay $4000 for one! I wish I had reserved one and then profit on it on eBay... :(

You are right, lisaOES. There are much simpler things to amuse your kids. I hope I can keep Marielena away from those things as much as possible and teach her how fun it is to use her imagination instead. Remember how much fun you used to have with a refrigerator box?!?

Very true. That much is crazy though. Jason went through it with the 360 craze last year, although not as bad. He didn't camp out and he didn't buy one off ebay. He called all the local stores within a 4 hour range. He found one in Shreveport...had it in his hands. He decided not to get it. He gave it back to the guy, but he regretted it and called back later that afternoon. It was gone. He got Bells Pausey, and he ended up having to drive out to Meridian on Brandon's birthday to see the Navy doctor there since he was still on orders for the ANG...and he had went to the ER that morning not knowing what was wrong. He found one in the TRU there and he went ahead and got it. He hardly plays it. We use it as our DVD player, so it gets used a lot, but he doesn't play many games on it. It was just an expensive $800 (after the 4 games he had to buy with it) DVD player. :/ The boys play it sometimes, but not really that much.

As for Christmas, we've already decided to spend $75-100 on each of the boys. I REFUSE to get ourselves in debt this year. I'll buy them 1-2 nice toys, an outfit, and the rest will be cheap toys (which they usually end up loving the most anyway). I know Jake can play with those really cheap plastic GI Joes for hours and hours...he never tires of them. I'm just tired of starting the new years off already heads over heels in debt to other people. Jason & I have already decided that our 3 year plan is to get EVERYTHING paid off - mortgage included - so the boys won't be getting 'spoiled' for a few more years! lol They may not like it, but they'll have much happier parents which will be better for them in the long run! :D
