playing and carting

We have friends who have 2 Samoyeds. They are very active with showing, herding, weight pulling and mushing/carting. Their youngest is 11 months old and Chewie and Gabby have a blast together. Our Riley was just a year in September, so he likes to go play with the big fluffy dogs too. The blur to the right of Chewie is Riley!

Here they are playing in their yard. They live surrounded by woods, so it is very beautiful.

This is actually a gag photo for their working sammie group. The wheel dogs (closest to the cart) are supposed to be your strongest dogs, so we put Riley there. Yay, a rat terrier at wheel!

Here's a real picture. Chewie and Gabby have carted 2 times together - this is the 2nd time. They really like it and pull well together. They went about 1/2 mile the first day, and went almost a mile in this picture. Oh, and Chewie has his favorite green shirt on in these pictures too. It helps keep the harness from pulling coat out. (The things we do to get ready for showing.......)

Here's another shot - this time with the cart. Linda and I laughed because she's running in front video taping, and I'm running behind snapping pictures. Donaven is riding the cart! Leave it to a man...
It was a good time though, and I definitely need the exercise.

That's really neat!! Does it take several people to train them?

I tested Beau once to see if he'd like it. I hooked up a leash to his harness and let him pull my niece on a scooter. He wasn't too impressed. I don't think he would've moved if I hadn't lead him.
Yes, definitely 2 people. Linda and Donaven have done it for years, so I'm glad they know what to do. Donaven actually made the cart himself, because he didn't like the ones they sell. It has steering, independent brakes and is real light and quiet.

Their Dillon hates to pull - that's why they are glad Chewie does! Note Dillon just running in front with Riley in the 3rd picture - that's more his style! Gabby is from working Samoyed lines, so he really gets into it. You need 2 to pull the cart, especially as they are so young. We hope to go over to their house weekly and do carting. We live over 30 minutes apart, so we can't do much more than that. It is really, really fun though!
There's no reason why sheepies can't cart; however, please wait until they are full grown before putting heavy weight for them to pull. Their bodies are still growing, you don't want to be putting undue strain on the joints, etc. Stress fractures are common with young bones.

Getting them used to the harness, following commands and having a good time is great! My Pyrs were naturals, first time out they loved it. Sheepdogs HATED it! LOL! "Me WORK??"
What a fun thing to do. Sounds like they are all good working friends!!!
Yes, I know they can't pull weight. The cart is super light - you can pull it with 1 finger in the loop. They are just learning commands and how to work as a team. And running off their extra energy in a good way.
What cute pictures. Samoyeds are such beautiful dogs, but after having one come in for blowouts every couple of months, I'm not sure I could deal with the shedding! lol I loved the dog, very sweet, but I think I blowed/brushed about 5 dogs out of him each time he came. ;)
I want one of those carts. With 3 or 4 sheepies in the house - I could have a blast running up and down the streets of Baton Rouge.   My problem would be to prevent them from chasing the neighbors cats and me going off roading in the cart.
WOW not only a herder to be but one that can tow the line with the samies. Cool.

We have next month a great time in the K9 world where a cart with 6 samies pulling it and santa in the cart with pressies for all the kids.

Maybe we need to steal chewie for the big day
Those pics were awesome!!! Really enjoyed hearing about your adventures too!!

Marianne and the boys
LMAO! These pictures are so cute and then I see the MAN with his hair flowing in the breeze as he isn't working. Just cracked me up!
