New OES Owner

Hi there,

So I brought home my first puppy, an OES of course, named Aspen. I've read your puppy sticky at the top, and found it very informative, and have found a lot of the tricks that are suggested, are very useful. Here's my questions though, hopefully you all can help me out here:

- When I brought her home, (she's 14 weeks old), she would walk around a little bit, then just lay down for a while next to me. After a while, she'd get up, get a drink of water and eat some food, then come lay down next to my chair. Is this normal for the first few days?

- What's the best way of potty-training? Already had an incident tonight where I went to put clothes away (and had just gotten in from taking her outside no less than 2 minutes before), and came back to the living room and saw she had marked the carpet, oddly with diarrhea. I've got the training pads around the house at the closest exit so she gets the idea if she needs to go, go to the closest door, but still take her outside every 2-3 hours or right after drinking/playing. Worried that when she's in her kennel at night, that i'll wake up the next morning with a mess.

- While she's asleep, she's panting pretty heavily.. is this normal for a puppy?

Thanks so much, I'm so excited to have a new companion and treating her well is much like treating me well, it'll be best for the rest of her life.

Welcome. :D

The behavior you described sounds perfectly normal to me. Our Chewie does that exact same thing. He is calmer than our previous 2 OES were though.

Diarrhea - very common with a transition to a new home - for any breed actually. Nerves from leaving home, mom and littermates; long car ride, change in water and food all contribute. Having diarrhea is very hard for a puppy to control. I hope Aspen doesn't have a stool in the kennel - that would be nasty. It does happen though.

Sheepdogs do pant - they easily get hot. Panting is common with stress too. Good luck with your new Aspen pup!
Sorry, I don't have puppy experience, but maybe it sounds like a puppy dream to me! Is there jerking and attenuated yipping and looks like he's trying to bark?

Dogs dream and make noises in their sleep, just like spouses. ;)

Welcome to the forum!!! You're gonna love it here.

Hi there and welcome, your new puppy is sounding fairly normal, just watch her over the next few days in the potty department. Her stools are probably a little bit loose as that could be caused by just excitement and getting use to her new enviroment. Make sure also that her worming is up to date. Are you feeding her a food that she has been fed previously?
If not then try and put her back onto that and slowly transition over to a food that you want to use. If you transition too fast the end result is usually diarrhea. 8O

You will probably find that she will make a mess in the Kennel overnight, do you have a crate? That is the best till they get use to there surroundings and new family, you can then have the crate beside the bed with the trining pad in them and a few towels lining the crate, put her out to potty when going to bed, then early in the morning. This way you can teach her when and where is aprropriate to potty as you are near her to take her out. Later she can advance to the Kennel with the same routine of potty before bed and potty early in the morning. Always reward them with a "Good Girl" when they do the right thing. Never scold them with puppy accidents, just ignore that and eventually they click and get the idea, that mom or dad is happier when I potty outside.

Puppy is probably panting with a little bit of aniexty & excitement as she is getting use to new people and new surroundings. :D

Best wishes with your new lil one and look forward to hearing more about her and Oh we love pictures too
Congrats! She sounds pretty normal to me, too. When we first brought Bingley home we were bringing him outside constantly until he got the hang of it - even then we still brought him out a lot! He is just starting to stay awake more than we're used to at 5 months of age. Before this he slept a good deal of the morning/day and was awake with insan-o energy in the evening!
Welcome to the forum! :)

I would say she is just adjusting... puppies don't have a lot of control over the muscles to "hold it" til usually 16 weeks or so. For most puppies, housetraining is more the owner being trained to take the pup out on a routine and learning the pups signal etc. It may just take your pup some time to get the idea of where you want her to go.

As for the diarreah, I would recommend a stool check at the vet to make sure she is parasite free, and as Lisa said, if you have put her on a different food than what she is used to, do the transition very slowly. A good quality food is essential too.

I hope we get to see pics! :)
Welcome to the forum and to your new sheepie puppy!
Welcome! :D
Welcome to the forum! :D
Congratulations on your new puppy! Mine were definitely more active when they were puppies so I think you're lucky if yours is more calm. Can't wait to see pics. Nothing better than puppy pics.
 Welcome to the forum and to your new sheepie puppy from Norway!
Thanks everyone for the help! :)

Week 1 has been great, she got over the panting, and the diarrhea problems. She's learning to go outside now, but still has the occasional accident inside. (Surprisingly, the carpet cleaner seems to do well!) She absolutely loves tennis balls for chewing, (learned this AFTER I found her chewing on my electric blanket.. which doesnt happen anymore.)

I've been keeping her in her kennel/tent every night when I go to bed, then when I get up, letting her out and seems to be working. When I go away and can't take her with me, she goes back in the kennel til I get home (max 2-3 hours). Is this a bad thing? I don't want to leave her out until she gets trained to go outside..

Also, anything to do about chewing on things? Photos are below! :)

Your Aspen is adorable! What a cute baby :D .

Your kenneling schedule sounds good - she should do just fine.

Chewie particularly likes nylabones, shank/knuckle bones and stuffed treat balls. He likes soft squeeky toys too. Just experiment and see what she likes the best! I pick up the toys, and rotate them, so they seem "new" periodically. We also have a wire basket the toys stay in, and he learned quick to go there 1st if we wanted something to chew.
listen to all of the posts you will learn alot here
I got Charlotte flown in from kansas to the netherlands. It was such a long flight, but she was absoluty fine.
The first days she had to ajust, and she was very quiet, and slept all day.
But after a week she got her energy back, and she played all day.

It took a little bit longer to have her house broken, but with loads of walks and garden visits she was after a month clean in the house.

Greetings Anita
