Regarding Christmas Card Exhange

While addressing all my Christmas cards this afternoon..I took a short break as yes..I was doing it long hand.Ha Ha! See Maxx, I'm getting organized so I won't be sending them out by Easter. :D
While taking a break, I picked up a Chicken Soup for the Soul Book and just flipped to a short story.

It turned out to be a story of a little boy whom had cancer and how many of his friends and teachers ralied around him at first. As months went by the mail dwindled and he had looked so forward to the cards and notes. To keep his spirits high his mom became his secret pal. After he passed his mom started an organization in which people can send a cheery note to a sick child.

Then it dawned on me!

After reading the story I had a thought..what if each one of us on the list added just one more card to send...perhaps a child with cancer or a aged person whom has no family. Imagine the joy we could bring to that person by flooding them with so many cards!!

Do you guys want to do it? It would only cost an extra stamp and a card.
The hard part would be getting to choose the person. Anyhow thought I'd throw this idea out there and see what you guys think.

I have another suggestion....after hearing about Leanne's hubby in the military...how about sending off a card or gift package for someone in the military. No matter what you think about the war...the people in the military are just doing their duty to their country and they deserve to have our respect.
I think there must be a site for Canada to send something to someone in the military. And I'm sure those of you in the states could send something to Leanne's hubby's group.
Apparently for the Canadian Troops, only letters or cards can be sent. You cannot send them a parcel unless you are a family or friend of a soldier. Here is the website http://www.forces.gc.ca/site/community/ ... ndex_e.asp

I couldn't find a similar website for the American Troops...maybe Joahaeyo(Leanne) could help with that one.
Both ideas sound wonderful.

Next time I talk to Mr. J, I can also ask him for a list of soldiers that may want a package for Christmas. It would take a few weeks since I only hear from him a few times a month. But you are always welcome to send a package using Mr. J's address, and put a note on top to pass it out to a single soldier. He did this on his last tour, and it definitely was a hit. I know when I see the single guys, they go out of their way to thank me, like I'm their best friend, even though up until then, I had never met them. They knew who I was because I always include a sexy picture of a hot female for them, "Yuki" ...and I had the dog with me when they saw me.
The post office has these GREAT "one price" boxes, For a set amount you buy the box and can stuff it full, then mial it for a set price no matter how heavy it is.

If anyone wanted to fill one full of goodies and mail it to Mr. J (his address is on the mailing list) I bet Mrs. J could talk him into playing Santa and handing out the goodies
I think that kind of idea is really caring...It shows how compassionate human beings can be. And why not....what's an extra $1.00-$1.50 to make someone genuinely happy!!! I know they had a raffle for St. Jude's in which I participated in. I'm sure it would be easy to pick someone and send them an extra card.

What about people in the "animal" field....????? People that work for non-profit shelters and ORGS that dedicate their every day life (and out of pocket money) for the cause of animals...People that wind up going without just to make sure all of the dogs and/or cats have food and shelter. Animals that are neglected and dumped, animals that need immediate medical treatment and foster care...forever loving homes....These people carry the burden on a daily basis of finding each and every animal a home. I think they would be thrilled to receive something partaining to animals over the holidays....

I know Petco has a list of people that do Non-Profit work and they have phone numbers and most likely websites. I helped them last year for a few hours on adoption day right before I moved and I don't know how they do it every day. I was practically hysterical by the end of the day.

I thought it would be nice if people sent animal cards to animal people..LOL.... what do I know!! ....

The military idea sounds great as well!!!! They are fighting for our freedom, and they deserve our respect....
Good thinking!!!

I almost forgot......

Do any one of you remember the Hallmark commercial about the Older woman receiving a card, and the neighbor across the street was watching her walk to her mailbox and get it. The neighbor sent a card because she saw the elderly woman was alone..... The elderly woman stood there and went into her mailbox and opened it. That card made her very happy and almost in tears, and pretty much brought tears to my eyes... Then again, what Hallmark commercial doesn't make people teary eyed!!??? lol

What abut sending an extra card to an elderly person....Or perhaps a veteran's home... Some of these people have NO ONE...

Michelina~
I remember that commercial and think that's a great idea! I think I'll be sending cards and cookies to everyone in my neighborhood now.
I like all these ideas!! We can do it!!

I've already included Mr J on my list, Fletcher too, and found this site if anyone was interested in sending a cheery note to a child.

You and me both!! I'm going for broke this year...
I'm also playing Mickey (my nickname) claus to my customers and they're OES....by sending them toys and treats.....
I love the holidays!! it's so much fun.... I love it! :hearts: :hearts:
When I go to any store...I'll be like..."Happy Holidays....Happy Holidays" to everyone....Some people look at me like I'm crazy but I don't care...

Holiday music going alll day and night long....ESP brena lee's "rockin' around the christmas tree" ...LOL

But when it's over, it's too quiet... :twitch: and I go crazy!!

My favorite part is wrapping the goody bags for customers when there is a moutain of dog toys around me....HAHAHA....that's oodles of fun.

oh yeah....HAPPY HOLIDAYS everyone!
lol

I think sending cards and or care packages to soldiers is an awesome idea! :)
I like the idea of sending a card to the military, and perhaps a card to a lonely old soldier at a vet's home....
I'm going to check out those links ...

Michelina~
I just made a few boxes for random single soldiers, and since people are asking me what kind of foods I would put in them, here's what I did. This is going out to a different set of guys in a different location than my husband. A friend said she needed help making them.

All of these were snack size.

Cheetos
Bugles Corn Chips
Pringles
Quaker Instant Oatmeal
Nutri-grain Bar
Beer Nuts
Oatmeal Raisin Cookies
Chex Mix, Traditional

Hot chocolate mix
Gatorade Mix
Lipton Cup A Soup, Chicken Noodle
Lipton Cup A Soup, Spring Vegetable
Pop Tart
Hunt's Snack Pack Pudding Cup

Box of sandwich ziplock bags
Flashlight
army t-shirt
A few toy cars
Wet Naps (always popular)
One set of AA batteries
Greeting Card
I'm loving that idea!!!!
Thank you for the links!
The word from the military people here on base is that packages needed to be sent by last Monday in order for the soldiers to receive them by Christmas. D'oh!!

Johaeyo, is there a list of prohibited items anywhere? The Army, USO and TSA have been NO help with that!!!!
I'll get mine out this weekend then........ I thought Mrs. J said it was only 10-14 days? 8O
Cards can be sent through, I believe they said  , December 14. Just the packages were supposed to have already been sent. Then again, it's the Army and you never know.....
The website I saw said next Monday for parcel mail. They say that because they don't want an overload of mail to come in at the same time for Christmas. If you're sending a package, priority mail, it's Dec. 4th. If it helps any, my entire church with soldiers in iraq, don't plan on sending stuff until Dec.

The prohibited items are basically anything illegal (paper, alcohol, porn). Nothing liquid. They say no home-cooked stuff, but I can tell you that all the wives at some point have sent home-cooked stuff. You just have to know how to pack it so it doesn't crumble, and not send anything that would go bad in 10-14 days.

:)

When you send something off, you'll be given a piece of paper to fill out. It will ask you what's in your box. You have the option to check box, gift items, but it's better to write the things out. "So you know" ...you don't have to be exact.

For my boxes, I write snacks, papers, toys, books, and anything odd shaped - I name specifically. (very general)
Basically, they want you to name the items that they may question if they scanned it to see what's inside.
Does the Post office ask for that?

Also, how about books? Is there any "demand" for paper backs? How about things like cross workd puzzle books, Sudoko etc?
The post office will give you the slip when you get there. I just fill it out while they're weighing the package. They always help you too :)

All those things are in high demand. I'm not trying to be say one thing over another because all the things I've been asked are the things most requested. They eat through books, crossword puzzles, etc. I know many of them like Mad Libs too. Is that what they're called, where you add in verbs, adj, nouns to a paragraph? My husband said last year, they would use a book until it practically fell apart, but their add-ins were all words/things that I can't insert on a PG-rated board.  Men are such pigs.

How would I know what is "illegal" and why is "paper" on the list?

I told that woman that I thought it was later and she was smoking crack but she was so certain!! I'm sending the cops over there to smack her around!

The liquid thing is what we were wondering about. One of the guys wanted mouthwash and we were debating whether or not to send it.

It's the customs form. We have a stack of them here and they all say what yours does. We fill them out the same everytime with general info and the name of the guys we send to. They aren't that hardcore about you naming every last little thing by name.

Thanks Johaeyo!!!!

Oh, you can! The problem is, when you have questionable items, you run the risk of your package being opened. Security will check it before it gets to the soldier to make sure it IS mouthwash. The trick was always to stick alcohol in place of the mouthwash. This was done A LOT the first 2 years people got deployed. For me, it's not worth having my nicely packed package opened by folks. Then it risks getting damaged as it makes it to the soldier.

Ron, they don't. They won't even know if you send p0rn, but if the soldier gets caught with it, he's in BIG trouble.

I used to name every single item I had on the list, and then realized I was spending way too much time at the post office desk , and it was unnecessary. Sometimes I just make up crap, not that I recommend that, but as I said.. they DON'T always check it unless there's something questionable inside when it's scanned.
I'm sorry, I don't get your reply... is it to my question? lol
My bad. I read it as "how would they know if I sent illegal papers"

:(

So I answered a question that wasn't asked.

As far as your question... I think by papers, they just mean p0rn.
