COUCH SUPPORT!!!

Bingley has just discovered the joys of the couch! We don't allow him on the furniture downstairs, but the other morning I was making myself breakfast and I looked at Bingley - he was very calmly and sweetly laying on the loveseat chewing one of his toys!!!!! 8O I told him "off" and had him get down, but I need some help here because he has figured out that they are WAY more comfortable than the carpet! Ideas? Suggestions?!!!

I have dog beds scattered throughout my house so it is not a choice of hard floor v. comfy couch. With enough repetition, Maggie has learned to stay off my furniture. You just have to be really determined and address is every time you see it. Of course, that may not prevent it while you are gone. . .
Or, if you see that you are not really going to be able to stop the behavior, you can always put a blanket on a certain spot on the couch where he can go. That way he is on the softness of the couch, but in a certain spot so he doesn't ruin the couch.
No help but our couch has threads coming up now from Yuki's nails. :(

We're thinking about not letting them on now.
I had been asking about this months ago and decided... whatever. Here was the picture of Foz telling Mom he was comfy on the couch...

Image

A friend of mine used this electronic mat that shocked their husky for the couch and jumping on counters. They let us borrow it, but it'e been sitting in the closet. I couldn't bring myself to use it for anything.

Good luck!
Seeing as I JUST finished putting my couch covers back on after washing them, I love the timing of this one. :D

I have fitted covers for the couch and loveseat. It is our compromise. The dogs get to lie on them, but I can easily clean them. Even if we didn't have dogs, the clean freak in me would cringe at not being able to clean them after kids, husbands, ..........whatever. 8O

That picture of Foz is great!
:hearts: Loved the picture of Fozzie on the coach. What a cutie and I could read his lips. lol

We have one chair in the livingroom that is disignated for the dogs to sit on. That is the only piece of furniture Violet ever gets up on. On the other hand, China will sit next to me on the coach, but I have put a small rug on the couch, where China sits, and vacuum and wash it often.
We have a Scraminal. Which emits a high pitched and rather obnoxious tone, when something breaks the infared beam. We used it to keep the cat off of the top of the chair. It worked great until he learned to creep in under the beam and when we readjusted for that, he learned that it only goes off for so long and if you lay still, it won't go off until the humans come home and tell you to move.

It had worked for the dogs though. We eventually gave in and just covered the couch. We'd forget about the stupid Scraminal and sit down on the couch only to have it go off and scare us half to death. Apparently, humans can be trained too!
Against all of our wishes...Pirate and Keira have complete rights to the couches, beds, chairs, etc.

"WE" have to ask permission to sit.

Go figure
Sorry Emily... no suggestions from me.. Murphy has his chair... covered in dog blankets.. Dudley has the love seat covered in dog blankets.. we are left with the couch....both of them have to step over their beds to get to their respected pieces of furniture...

I gave up a long time ago......

Brenda.. who has no control over where anyone sleeps....
ACH! The only reason we don't want Bingley on the couches is to make our guests more comfortable. In light of the responses above Ian and I have decided that we're going to go with the blanket theory. Blanket on the couch - lay on the blanket. :D

The funny thing is, I put the blanket on the couch and he immediately jumped up. After he figured out it was ok, he jumped back down and went to sleep on the tile!!! Pictures of the couch forthcoming!!
I let mine on the couch.... I probably shouldn't, but it really doesn't bother me at all....
I keep a blanket or a quilt thrown over our couch. I gave up trying to keep dogs off of it and the bed. It's easier for me just to sit on the floor.
 Willoughby and I share the glider couch on my patio in fine weather. He loves to be rocked, with his head and paws in my lap. Inside, as I have a regular loveseat and it doesn't rock or glide, he stays on the floor. He has a circular dog bed, blankets and towels to lie on with his bone. So far so good. I have blankets in case!
Mine own the couches downstairs, heck I gave up years ago

Throw rugs are the answer, then when they get a bit woofy they are easy to take off and wash and they protect the couches from getting dirty, slobbered on or nails damaging them.

Visitors well that is another story, if they can move the sheepies off then they have a place to sit HA HA.

Gotta love those sheepie loving couch potatos.

Chaunce also has ownership on couch and recliner. In fact he will not be satisfied if Bobby lays on his end of the couch. Once he's aggravated Bob enough I will remind him he is laying at Chauncey's end....and he will move to the other end, I know better . We do use throws, I like cuddling on the couch with Chaunce.
Oh I too gave up. I took the back cushions off so they have more room to stretch out and not fall off. A few blankets underneath and a flannel sheet over that............all quickly hidden when company calls.
I wish I had a dollar for everytime I said OFF in one day, I would be very wealthy  I buy the cheap sheet sets from K-Mart, one on the couch and one on the loveseat.
I've just reread all this posts in the topic, and it occures to me, MAN, ARE WE SUCKERS!!!!!

Who owns whom around here?

And...do you think our dogs have their own forum we don't know about, where they laugh at us :excited: ?
Deb, ABSOLUTELY :!: :!:
I am not much help either. I bought my sofa in our family room with the dogs in mind. Microfiber with added protection. Large sectional holds all 4 dogs and almost all the adults in the house. I just use my dyson to vaccume and a damp cloth to get up the doggie drool!! We do have the dining room and living room gated so we have a dog free zone!!! I was putting sheets on it but felt I was just running my electric bill up washing and drying then all the time!!
Bosley prefers the window sill, which is great.

Image

He will get up on the couch but normally just when someone else is sitting on it so he can lay across their lap. :?

I figure that is why I have non-shedding dogs...we don't have problems with getting hair all over the clothes. If our visitors don't like it they can either stand or find a wooden chair. Funny how the sheepies don't care for the hard chairs.

Dixie LOVES her comfy spots, though. She claims all the couches and chairs that come into the house.

Image

My husband is forever changing our furniture around, so we get a lot of second hand stuff and then change it after a few months or a couple years, anyway. Thne we don't have to fret about it.

But we do have one room that the dogs are blocked from that we only let them in when we are their....but they are still allowed on the good furniture, though. BUt we don't let them in with wet paws etc.

We have found that we have gravitated over to friends who are all doggie people, anyway, so no big deal. And family members who aren't....well, need I say more..?
We have a chocolate colored L-shaped sectional. Izzie prefers the corner spot...so we have two chocolate colored bath towels covering her spot. We just toss them in the wash once a week and that keeps the sofa protected. Here's Iz on the sofa before we got the matching towels.

Image

Izzie sleeps on my bed...so I have a sheet over my duvet cover to protect the bed, and that also gets washed once a week. I am so much of a sucker that I actually have an ottoman next to my bed to make it easier for her to jump up.

Image
:D 8) What a sweety that Izzie is! :hearts: How could you tell those big chocolate eyes no.
When we picked out the fabric for our new couch, we were very conscious of the dog situation, so we scratched and rubbed on the sample fabric to make sure it wouldn't tear easily. What we failed to do, however, was test it against the dog hair. Apparently it is a dog hair magnet! (you live and you learn, right?)
So Callie is not allowed on the couch in the living room. She knows that, and she is fine with it. It took us a couple of weeks of constantly telling her "NO!" everytime she jumped up there or thought about jumping up there, but now she knows and she doesn't even attempt it.

However, she does know that the couch in the basement is her couch. When we go down there, she is immediately on that couch - acting like the princess that she is. 8) It has a slip cover that can be washed, although it needs a new one b/c her jumping up and skidding to a stop has almost completely warn out the seat part of the slip cover.
If you happen to see any of my pictures you will see I'm in no position to advise you how to keep a dog off the couch. :D

I guess that's why my latest couches are brown. I got tired of looking at blankets on the couch. But then over time they start to get scratched up so out came the throws again.

It's as much my preference they be on the furniture because I like sitting there and hugging a sheepie. To me that's one of the great pleasures of life.

The new couches in the living room they are not allowed on but we still find pillows on the floor when we come home.

I'm sure enjoying all of the pictures of dogs on couches in this thread.
I was telling hubby about this thread last night. Our dogs don't go on the furniture. We used to tell the dogs "off" when they were smaller so they didn't come on the furniture. As I was talking about this thread....Avalon very quietly gets on the couch with hubby and lays quietly.....Now usually Avalon is anything BUT quiet. I just had to laugh. My dogs on the couch...oh no not at this house
AHHHHHH yes, the "to couch or not to couch" discussion. Definate TWO schools of thought. I say go with what ever works!!!

LOVE THE FOZZIE PICTURE

We TRY to be a no couch family............... unfortunately Tasker is smarter4 than we are and has figured out how to listen for approaching footsteps (opening doors or even cars in the drive) and has become quite stealthy at getting on and off the couch when no one is looking. The displaced cushions tell the story

At hsi age I've decieed WHAT THE HECK and just pretend I don't know what he's up too!!!

DITTO :!: I have given up
Luckily Barney can't get up on the couch, but this is what it looks like at my parents' house with Maggie...

Barkley and I love to cuddle on the couch!
Image

My MIL was over this week and was horrified when she saw Barkley hop up on the couch. I don't see anything wrong with him being on the furniture....

We're getting leather at some point, so it will be easy to wipe off. Everyone's said a dog's nails will scratch the leather, but... whatever. Maybe I'll start putting out a blanket to designate "his spot". That's a great idea.

You'll have to tell us how that works for you... My mom has a leather couch and she just puts a blanket on Sadie's spot. But Sadie climbs up on the couch so daintily that it's not a big deal anyway. Callie runs, jumps, and skids to a stop so I'm thinking that she would scratch a leather couch in a second. We have a leather ottomon and a couple of times she has gotten mad when Lambda gets under there and out of her reach. So there are some teeth marks of frustration around the edges.
With leather I would be more concerned about chewing....
8O
Leather....rawhide....leather.....Hmmmmm...

But then Dixie had no problem tasting my cloth couch set.. And note she was ON THE FLOOR....not on the furniture.....

Image
Not only are my dogs allowed on the couch, so are visitors!

Bentley made himself at home, too!

Image
Jill,
I am still wanting a leather couch (I posted some time ago about it). I see you have a leather couch with TWO SHEEPIES on it 8O 8O Have they damaged it???????????????????
You know, I figured a leather couch wouldn't be a big deal, because I noticed that my breeder has all leather furniture in her living room and she has 4-8 adult dogs in the home at any one time and her litters are raised in her living room, getting free reign of the house at 5 weeks old. The leather is a little bit scratched up, but not noticeably. Just general wear - I think it's older furniture.

The leather may be tempting to chew... good point Nicole. Barkley always tries to chew my suede purse when he gets a chance. Mmm.... cow.

She looks ferocious
Molly has tried to get on the couch a couple of time, and I always told her to get down, so she never tries anymore, but she has her own comfy bed in the living room, and she loves that bed, it looks like a stuffy/food/clothes/shoe bed, and when Pirelli is visiting I don’t understand how they find room there,,,

I wouldn't recommend anything else. But, most importantly, don't buy cheap leather as that makes all the difference. Mine is a really high grade, pebbled leather. It's thick and very durable, but very soft and comfortable. A little leather conditioner takes any scratches that do happen right out. It may cost you a few thousand dollars more now, but it'll last forever.

Besides, 2 OES are nothing. Usually, there's 2 people and at least 2 dogs! I have no idea what kind of shennanigans go on when I'm not there either but whatever they do, the couch still looks great!
Sighhhhhhhhhhhh, someday I'll have my leather couch!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bogart has been great 2 1/2 years and has not tried to
jump on the couch,

Until last week!

Now I know he has been reading the OES forum
when I'm busy :D

We are sticking to the rules-no couch. Pack leaders only.

(And yes, we have a leather sofa)

I think he popped up on the sofa to get a better look at the
Patriots/Jets game
Maybe bogart has been sneaking a look at this topic without you knowing and thought geez mom all the other sheepies are couch potatos why not me? LOL. 8)

I love all these couch potato pictures.
We have a Lane leather couch that has held up really well...so far. I believe Annie spends most of her day up them and doesn't move around very much. The true test will be Foz as he likes to jump up, down, up down...So far we only have a few scratches here and there but nothing drastic. Look how sweet he used to be :D

Image
My best part of the day is the evening when I lay on the sofa and Abby snuggles with me. She loves to snuggle. Our dogs are allowed on the sofa but they don't really lay on it unless a human is on. As for guests they all know that at our house "dogs rule and humans drewel" (spelling?)
