why is he challenging me?

I have been fostering Duke for a little over a month now. For some reason he seems to want to challenge me. When we got ready for our before bed walk he was somewhat "mouthy" and jumping up. The hubby is not at home tonight so maybe he is challenging me as to who the alpha is? Puddy has never done this so I do not know. I made him lay down and rolled him onto his back. Did I do the right thing? It has been raining today so not too much walking.

Yes, thats exactly what i have done with panda when she gets a little uppity...and i make her stay on her back between my legs until i decide its okay to get up....it improves her disposition almost immediately...

hope it worked for you!
Yes it did help. I guess I am just wondering why. We think we may have a furever home for th Dukester and wanted to figure out why. On a side note, our first inquiry on Duke was from Arizona. Looks like even if it is not my sweetie, you may have another sheepie in the state.
Chauncey is an alpha personality, I've found if I walk into him, without making eye contact, or turn my back to him and igore him it helps.

I would suspect he was getting antsey and excited and was displaying this. He can learn to sit quietly and politely when it is time to get prepped for walks. When he jumps or gets mouthy just turn around and leave the area, or ignore him by standing still, arms crossed and look at the ceiling until he settles.

If he gets attention and things move quickly for him when he sits and waits he will do it more often and consistently. I LOVE the way Dixie runs to the door or to her "feeding area" and slides into a sit, while her butt end is going a mile-a-minute.
Oh Dixie!! sigh....what a doll!!

If the furever people are in AZ let them know about us (me and Sue) and if they need any help at all....we can ALWAYS use another wigglebum in our play group
I wouldn't roll him on his back, mostly because you don't know him that well and there is a chance he can challenge you further and you could get hurt!

Walter gets very naughty with me when he thinks I am leaving the house, he nips at me and jumps and gets very anxious. The only thing that has ever worked for us is positive reinforcement. I grab a treat, take him to a designated spot, put him in a down-stay, and continue to get ready. Then when I am done I put the treat on the ground and he can have it once I open the door and am leaving. It has worked wonders!

I would suggest putting him in a down-stay while you get things ready and then giving him a treat when you are done getting ready. Then he will look forward to being a good boy when you are getting ready for the walk!
