entropian eyelid

Ava has been back and forth to the vet for her eyes for about the past six month - since she was about a year old. At first they thought it was allergies and they treated her with antihistamines and Atopica. They cleared up for a short time, but this last bout of it doesn't seem to want to get b etter. Her one eye is all swollen and seems ok when we keep putting the antibiotic ointment into it but her eyelid does seem to roll in a bit on the one eye - they were both that way for a few weeks, but the other one seems to have corrected itself. Do you think it is an entropian eyelid or something else??

Ron has some great diagrams on this to explain how entropian looks, plus add a hairy lid for OES.

If you are suspecting this condition, it is an hereditry eye disorder that has been over the years detected in OES, although not common.

If you are not happy with the vet you are seeing then please see an animal eye specialist, they will know more as you have had problems with avas eyes for awhile, they will be able to tell you if it is allergy related or something else.

If it is entropian, then simple corrective surgery is needed otherwise there is a risk of blindness because of the constant irritation to the cornea from the hairs.

Here is a little extract on the Condition that an eye specialist screens for when examining the eyes for clearances. Just one of the things listed on an eye exam that they look for.

Entropion is relatively uncommon and generally affects the lower eyelid when it occurs. It can partially or completely affect the eyelids. It can be unilateral or bilateral and usually is seen within the first year of life. The condition is thought to be dominantly inherited but with variable expression and penetrance. Affected animals should not be bred.

Hope all goes well and keep us posted as to what is happening with Ava.
Have a friend with a very well bred OES have this eye problem. Sounds exactly like what you are going thru. You may need to consult a vet eye doctor. The surgery went great, but the dog was no longer able to be shown as it had been "corrected."
Ava is scheduled for surgery for her eyes on December 28th - wish us luck
Good luck to Ava on the upcoming surgery. She is so cute, and now she will be feeling better. I can't imagine how awful that must feel.

:hearts: to Ava.
I hope that Ava's eye surgury goes well. Bella and Winston send her sheepie kisses.
Best wishes to Ava for a good surgery and a quick recovery. It is never easy when our babies are sick.
Good luck with your "facelift" Ava! We'll want to see some pictures of the new you!

Just an eyelift, Ron! Not the whole "works"!

Hope the surgery is uneventful and her recovery is quick and painless.
Best wishes for Ava, she will be fine and your precious girl will feel so much better after the corrective surgery is done.

Hugs
Hi,

"The boys", Blue, Merlin and Panda are sending Ava some sloppy sheepie kisses and sending her best wishes.

Hugs to Ava's mom as well, as whenever our kids are going through surgery ..think it's always hardest on the moms.

Marianne and the boys
Best wishes for a successful surgery and a speedy recovery. :)
Good luck and best wishes for a speedy recovery!
All the best to your baby...

I feel your pain. Bosley had eye surgury in June 2006...on his eyeball 8O He had a cone for 6 weeks...24 hours a day....

But he is good as new! Just like Ava will be...At least you confirmed the problem so she will not have all the itching etc bothering her anymore.

HUGS...
Good luck with the surgery, I hope she recovers quickly :)

A friend of mine had a weimeraner who had eye entropion and had the surgery done. Unfortunately the problem continued to recur and there were 2 more surgeries after the first was unsuccessful. I'm not sure if after 3 surgeries it finally worked or if she just gave up?
I truly hope your outcome is better...
Good luck for the surgery hope everything gos well boo is sending big kisses
Best of luck with the surgery, our lab had this surgery before he was a year old. All went extremely well and it was a relatively short recovery period, wishing Ava the same.....Kathy
Ava is also going to be spayed while she has the eyelid surgery - hate to do it to her all at once, but better to get it over with....hopefully she won't be too mad at me. Since we are bringing Buddy home today it might be a very interesting weekend after the surgery. My boyfriend has said he would keep Ava at his house for a few days till she is feeling better though (he says this even after he tells me not to get Buddy...I will never understand men)
