How to Clean Wood Floors?

So we've been cleaning our wood floors for two years now with white vinegar and warm water. I read somewhere that vinegar would take off the finish. There really isn't much finish to take off as it was all worn down when we moved in anyway.

What should I use that would clean and disinfect wood floors?

Maybe something from the PineSol product line?

I forgot to log in! I'm the one who posted this question.

The other day I called my cleaning lady to find out what she used to clean my house as the chemical smell was just unbearable. She said she thought she'd do something special for us (we're new clients) said she brought in her PineSol. I already had a huge headache that day and the Pinesol pushed it over the edge. Felt like throwing up and opened doors/windows when is was 35 degress outside.
Excellent question, I'm looking forward to replies to this one.
I have mostly hardwood floors, but they're older than dirt. I just mop them with whatever cleaner I happen to have on hand, but I'd love to know of something that can give them a shine.
Are you ready for this? You may find it hard to believe, but if you will use TEA to clean your floors, it will remove "buildup" without stripping the finish. I don't know that it would do anything to disinfect, but it does clean the hard wood floors beautifully, makes them shine and leaves the wood color intact. My mom & sis have been doing this for years and their floors look brand new.
Oh, if you want to buff up your hardwood floors to a nice shine, use a floor wax (one that specifically says safe for wood floors).

One of my old apartments had 100 year old hardwood floors and they were beautiful because once every month or two they would get a good wax & buff.

Use a soft cloth/rag to do it and be prepared for a backache afterwards!
I saw where Pledge or some other furniture polish has something out now. Maybe look into that?
MURPHY'S OIL SOAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is wonderful, it is specially made for cleaning wood floors and baseboards and ANYTHING WOOD. I have used it FOREVER and my Mom used it long before that. In your grocery cleaning isle.
Are floors picky? Do they want the high-priced teas or does any brand work?

Murphy's leaves them dull in my opinion... I have some here, but I don't like it at all....
I use murphys oil soap too! If you have sealed prefabed wood floors like ours, believe it or not, you can use 1 cup of windex to 1 gallon of hot water. It will not leave streaks on the wood floors and not only that, but they squeek....I love squeeky clean!!!

Btw...I personally wouldnt recommend pledging your wood floors, thats how I ended up breaking my elbow....and its not good for the dogs either.....
I always rinse the floor after using Murphy's. I LOVE the smell of it.
okay, so it was Orange Glo I was thinking about.

Oh, and Darcy, I learned the hard way about furniture polish on the floors, too. My Mom had hardwood floors when I lived at home, I did not injure anything but my pride and my backside.
well besides my pride and bottom....for three weeks I had to have brian do my hair and makeup....let me tell you, IT wasnt PRETTY....no man should be allowed to touch eyeshadow!
Thanks everyone! I'll try to locate some OrangeGlo. I've seen it before.

Now that I think about it, we used to use Murphy's oil, but it seemed like Annie would puke that night. I think she liked the smell and licked it off the floor all day!

No...just plain ole Lipton or even a generic store brand. Brew it as if you were going to drink it (but do not add sugar) and dip a cloth in it and rub it on your floors. Works great!

If I remember correctly, my sis got this tip from the Queen of Clean book.
I use this stuff...I get it at ACE Hardware

http://www.bona.com/global/global/Produ ... r_cleaner/

It is really easy to use. After sweeping you spray it on the floor and then wipe it up with a microfiber mop/sweeper thing.
Amanda that is what I use- BONA. I was given the mob and cleaner when I had my wood floor installs. I love it.

I was told to be careful what I use because most cleaners will take off the finish. I have engineered hard wood floors, so maybe they are different too.
The Bona system is great for spot cleaning too...you don't need to get out a bucket or anything. Just sweep, spray and wipe. And you can just throw the microfiber mop thing in the washing machine to clean it.
I realize this is an old post, and this isn't directed to the original people who were posting but more to people who come across this thread looking for information. This thread came up when I did a search on hardwood floors and murphy's oil soap so it got my attention. I've made it a personal vendetta to go out and inform people that using murphy's oil soap on your hardwood is a bad idea.

I am a hardwood flooring professional with seventeen years experience in the trade and murphy's oil soap makes my job refinishing floors difficult.

THE BEST cleaner for hardwood flooring is 1 cup vinegar to 1 gallon of water.
THANKS! I hope to put hardwood floor down in the next year and always thought murphy's oil was the end all be all!!

I use straight water- nothing more. The floors shine like glass. VERY easy to care for! :)

Isnt' that what they say is best for ceramic tile as well? I really wish floors weren't picky. I clean the shower and toilets daily as I get out of the shower, and i'm always tempted [but haven't] to use those products on our floor. :?
what about laminate floors. My kitchen floor gets cleaned about every other day and it never looks good. I have used laminate cleaner, just plain water with a bit of dettol. No good.

I have been told to only use Windex (a glass cleaner), just spray and mop or a laminate flooring cleaner. If you are using water make sure that you are not saturating the floor. The water will get under and cause problems.
So if you do use water... make sure the mop is wrung out really good before you mop.

I have been very happy with the results with the Windex. Keeps the floor nice and shiney. 8)
I like Pledge Multi-Surface. It smells really nice-- same idea as the Windex.

Usually, we just mop with a little soap and water and I only shine it up special occasions. Too much work!
Dont get the floor too wet! that made me laugh. Sheepie having a drink of water, slurpy chin.....I do try though honestly not to get it too wet!

Equal parts Murphy's and white vinegar. works like a charm.
Just bought a very old house with original wood floors and was searching how to best clean them before I try refinishing and did not realize this was an OES forum, so I got a bonus. I love sheepdogs had them growing up (Bumbles he was in an Alpo commercial and Muffin she was in a CornFlakes commercial and on Wonderama and several other things) and one as an adult Abigail. I cant wait to one day have another one, maybe when my kids have kids so when they visit they will have a Nanny to watch over them like we did when we were kidsand like mine did whe they were kids.

Oh and BTW Murphys oil soap very bad for floors, that much I knew before I searched, there is no oil in it I was told and it will ruin wood floors.

You all have some pretty pups! :D
I had a difficult time finding the right product too. Finally, Johnson liquid polish/wax in a metal can, is the best I've used. It is a cleaner as well, but I do mop first and let dry. Locally sold at Lowes, but probably many other places too. Just pour it directly on the sealed floor, damp mop and let dry. The floors will be just shy of reflective. Gorgeous. It has a fairly strong odor. I usually mop and then run errands.
Merry Christmas :santa2:

Keep looking at the pictures and you won't be able to wait to get your own!
My entire house is hardwood floors and I LOVE my steam cleaner! No chemicals and uses steam not water so dries almost immediately. Also use Murphy's oil soap and a new product called Bona. Sray it, wipe with damp mop. Works great.
Who could resist faces like that lol. :clappurple:
