Gross! Infection Explosion After a Puncture Wound

As some of you may have remembered, Clyde and Bear got into it last week and both boys walked away from the fight with a couple of injuries. I didn't see them at the time but Bear had a bite on the top of his head (8O) and on his leg but they were just surface wounds. Clyde pulled a muscle, which was fine by the second day and suffered a puncture wound on his belly. We cleaned it up well and applied pressure at the time but two days later, the wound swelled up to the size of a ping pong ball with infection. It was oozing slightly and, all around nasty looking. Luckily, though, it really didn't seem to be bothering him at all and it's in a place between his legs that he can't touch. We took him to the vet and she prescribed oral antibiotics and told us to do warm compresses at least twice a day. She told us that the oozing was normal as the infection came out-- well, I should say, she told James, I wasn't there to hear that part.

Today, I turned around after rinsing some dishes in the kitchen and walked into a milky bloodbath. Clyde had been lying on it in a weird way and, apparently, when he got up, all the ooze came pouring out-- all over the floor, down his leg and, of course, on Bear who figured that he ought to taste test it. I can't believe how much stuff came out. It was a huge trail, about fifteen feet long. Yuck!

Now I've got a bunch of clean towels out and I'm chasing him around, lying them down wherever he goes but it appears the worst is over. The wound is nearly flush with his skin again, too and that seems like it should be good since it no longer looks swollen.

Just wanted to share that gross experience with all of you.

Thank you...now I can finish my lunch.

Glad to hear that Clyde is on the mend, and that Bear is such a sweetheart as to help clean up the mess...with his tongue and fur. 8O
Thanks for sharing Jill!
poor dog, i hope he feels better soon
Gross gross gross gross gross. I'm having trouble with my afternoon coffee now. :twitch:

Hope that's the end of the pussy stuff.
Thanks, Jill!! Nasty!

Do you wanna hear about the cat vomit I cleaned up last night too?

Glad Bear & Clyde are both mending well. Are they getting along okay this week? :?
Yes, they've been on their best behavior. I'm now hoping last week was just a cranky week for them and now they're in better moods.

I know it was gross, but it was also pretty scary. You turn around and see all this stuff that looks like blood and it's pretty shocking. I didn't see it coming at all. I'll take vomit any day. At least I know where that comes from!
Woo hoo!!!

I like a good pus story. Is he on Clavamox? We had experience with a skin infection...

Mole, Cyst or Zit... what is it?

For some reason, I can't get the John Belushi as Bluto with Mashed Potatoes scene out of my mind... 8)
8O Glad I already ate my lunch! Hope everyone feels better soon. That must have been one scary nasty fight.
That's disgusting... :twitch:

Glad he's ok though.... wow... yuck!
Good thing it popped - he needed to get rid of that junk! I love a good pus story  , but glad it wasn't my mess to clean up.

mmmmmm! Makes me think of cup cheese...

Glad it popped (that doesn't sound right though) It must be a
relief to him that it is mostly gone. At least there isn't any
pressure now. Imagine if you had been hugging him - ewwweeee

Shellie
BTW, are you feeling okay, Jill? You're home in the middle of the day washing dishes? :?
Oooh gross, know how bad that is, Kelsey had an abcess on her side 2 years back and it exploded, and left a hole there, went to the vets, gave her anti-biotics it dried up then started filling again, I went back and had it surgically removed as it would of exploded again and oozed heaps of yucky puss again and left the hole there again to fill up again, so out it came.

Keep a close eye on him over the next few weeks to make sure it does not fill up again. That is quite common it doing that. Might pay you too, to get him onto some anti-biotics
eww!
ewww!
eewww!
eewwww!

Yuck!
Did you take pictures??
Oh Darcy! After my own heart - but I didn' have the nerve
to ask it...

So, did you????

Shellie
Lol. No, but what a great idea-- and the camera was on the table, too. It looks like it already filled up a bit so I may have another chance.

Tammy, I had a migraine so I came home early. Good thing, huh?
The same thing happened to my sister's dog EXCEPT it was during the middle of the night while he was sleeping in the same bed as her. If we are going to be gross, I figure I might as well add to the fun.

Eeeww.
Hope the worst is over Jill, and the guys are doing better.
I knew I shouldn't have read it..... :?

You call that FUN? 8O
I was going to go get a dish of vanilla yogurt withh strawberries but I thinf I will pass on it now
I am deathly afraid to fly, but bring on the puss!! Never have gotten grossed out by any of that...well, except the poopie explosion, but that was EVERYWHERE...

Id really like to see a picture of it...

Well...not good that you had a migraine! But, good for Clyde that Mom was there when his wound exploded to take care of him. Those warm compresses work wonders drawing out the puss, don't they?

How's he look today?
The redness has gradually gone down but there's still swelling. I really hope he doesn't explode again when I'm not there. 8O
If you had not of been there Bear would have had it all cleaned up when you got home. You would have really wondered what had happened when you found it all over him.
I assume he would've laid in it, too-- as if he isn't dirty enough!
Thanks you so much for sharing that with us.
Really Jill, aren't you at least grateful it wasn't on your SHOES
Darn, I missed this post. Chauncey's wound didn't blow up into a big old pus pocket, darn. I miss all the good stuff! :phew: Now that I'm retired I miss a good old pus explosion once & a while....

Why oh why do I keep coming back here??

Still gagging.....I feel like hurling now..... :twitch:

Ron, can you lock this thread away from me? 8O
Leave my thread alone! Poor Clyde's feelings are very hurt that you're all so grossed out by his wound.

I'll tell you guys, I'm living in fear now of another explosion now. The color is more normal but the swelling is still there. I've been doing the warm compresses and he doesn't seem to be in any pain but it's so gross looking.

I thought Chauncey did get a pus pocket. He never did? Give it some time. It took Clyde 2 or 3 days for his to fill up!
Yea, you haven't lived until you find it before it blows and you can express/lance it...OH, how I miss the ER!!!!
Chauncey's tunneled which concerns me. This is more indictitive of an anerobic bacteria....can I come pop Clyde's
Popping it for him, now that grosses me out, and not much
really gets me.
Funny how this came up for me just above Joahaeyo's
creamy-licious shells post! mmmmm

And just so you don't feel too bad Jill, I must have missed a
hole in Tucker's head the other day after their go around. I
found it tonight while I was walking the boys.(together!! yay for
me!!) I made them sit, and as I was watching them I noticed a
weird wet spot on Tucker's head, and low and behold it was a
small puncture. Zeke must have been cleaning it before we
left because I realized most of the top of Tucker's head was wet.
It doesn't seem ooozie, at least not yet.

Shellie
Really gross Jill! I hope Clyde is feeling better.
My Boxer's boob blew out when her milk ducts got clogged.
She had a gapping open wound the size of a golfball on her boob.
That image has never left me.
And now it will never leave me... You know I will be thinking
about that tomorrow morning Elissa when I am brushing my
teeth...

The vet suggested letting it express itself-- believe me, I'd LOVE to pop it. After the first explosion, I tried to get the rest of it out and it just wasn't ready. Kind of like a giant pimple that you can only get the tiniest bit of junk out on because it's time hasn't come yet! The vet told us it could be a couple of weeks until it's back down to normal. It's amazing the damage a single tooth can do, you know?
Have you had to shave any hair around it, Jill?

Sorry Shellie

It's on the trimmed area of his tummy so it's the most hairless spot he has, luckily. The only hair I trimmed was the stuff that was kind of sticking into the wound, but they were just tiny annoying hairs-- nothing huge. That would've really sucked if it were on his side or something since we'd spent these last 6 months growing him out and working so hard on his coat!
Exploding boob really outdoes Jack's exploding puss bags on his elbows. Was kinda cool looking inside of the crater, seeing little baby puss pockets forming nearby.

Nor does Glacier's fly bitten nose and face equal the exploding boob. That is a mental picture that will be hard to live up to.

For all this grossness, the dog hardly notices. If it were us, we'd be bedridden, complaining constantly. We need live more like our dogs........I don't mean we need to start licking each others' wounds.

That's good...I was hoping you didn't have to mess up his coat after you've been working so hard to grow it back out.
Ok I admit I want to see what this sore looks like so I know what to look for.

Hope it gets better quick though.

You asked for it. Pics are on their way, pending approval. I laid down on the floor and got under him to get them. I'm glad I did because now I realized that it's time to clean it again!
POOR CLYDE AND YOU! You must have been really taken off guard even though you can have fun with it now. Hugs to you guys! It's amazing the things that you don't really mind doing or taking care of when you care about your dog so much.
