While we've been on the subject of neutering...

I guess I'm a little naive in this department but has there been a change of veternary procedure over the past several years for neutering?

The reason I ask is that when I got my first sheepdog done in 91, they completely removed his scrotum, but he was only about 6-9 months old. Now with Frank, they left the scrotum which I am much happier about because it was a tiny incision.

Just wondering if it was s.o.p. for all dogs to leave the scrotum intact now or only fully-matured ones? :lmt:

Is it possible that the skin is stretched with age so there's more to cut and they avoid it for that reason? Because it would be more of an incision on the larger area and more to stitch up? Or maybe even cut (yikes) the skin off for a tight stitching? That's more a theory than fact so that's why I'm only throwing it out as speculations. My boys were both done young. When Clyde and Bear got their procedures done everything was sewn back tight but when we rescued Buddy, and he was neutered, his scrotum was left hanging as well. It's kind of sad looking, really. :?

Yes, it is kind of a bummer that it's just hanging there, but it's nice that all of the hair "back there" can kind of hide things. If the vet did opt to remove the scrotum it would have been an incision about 6-7" long. Now it's only about an inch long. I am thankful that they didn't remove it because Frank was his same old self the same evening he had it done. We had to really keep him restrained so he wouldn't run around.
They end up shriveling up to nothing but a little loose skin.
I didn't think Pepsi would, but they did.
I think it's a much less invasive procedure.
In Australia that is the only way they neuter a male dog, less invasive and small incision. When I had my Newfoundland, he was neutered at 2 and I thought it would take forever to shrink down and it did. Looks OK and is a better less invasive way of neutering the males.

I have not heard of here them removing the scrotum as well when neutering the males. 8O
It is pretty new apparently. When Norman was done, everything went away because people thought it was gross. :? Now they leave it intact unless the owner specifically requests full removal.
I found this out the hard way!! When Carl was done everything was fine but one day I was grooming him and found 'the sac' and was totally confused for a minute. Did some research called the vet and they said it is their most common question after neutering because the vets always forget to tell the owners about the change in procedure. They also said that most people call and ask why their dog wasn't neutered when that's what they brought him in for!

I don't think I really want to see the pics associated with this thread either!!!

We had a discussion a long time ago similar to this on my basset forum. There is apparently a surgical implant that they can put in the now-empty scrotum - so your dog still looks like it has testicles. It is supposed to make them feel less emasculated! I can't find the post, or think of the product name, but it was great!! I never laughed so hard. They make them for other animals too. I bet guys buy them for their dogs..........
Neuticles!
That's crazy! Dogs don't have ego issues LOL
That is crazy!!
It's a real biz....
