How long does candy last?

So all this Halloween candy was on sale 50% off today...and I am one to plan for the future, months in advance...LOL

So I bought choc bars, tootsie rolls, rockets, lolipops, gum...some bags are assorted.

I want to either save this until Dec break and have my kids take a treat bag to their friends for "friendship day" or Valentine's day.

Do you think it will still be okay, soft and chewy...??? I want to open the bags and let the kids enjoy some now and in their school lunches.

But 90% saved.

Now or Laters (is that what they're called) get hard after awhile.

But we are candyoholics. I buy 3-4 bags a week. I store them in the cabinet because candy with trivia does not come around too often.

I know those cadburry eggs go bad after a year. I ate one that had been in the closet, and there was no denying it was a "rotten egg."

Our chocolate stays in our freezer if I plan on keeping it for a year, but other than that have never had a problem with chocalate. We have about 5 bags right now that are probably 4 months old in the closet. Still tastes great :)

Our assorted tootsie rolls, starbursts, skittles, laffy taffy, and pretty much every brand of chocolate stays good in our house for up to 6 months.

Mary Janes also get hard after several months, and that black and orange wrapper candy that tastes like peanut butter (only comes out during halloween).
Thanks,

I am sure it won't be a hardship to eat them..LOL and buy more in Feb, but it would be great if they could last until then. Cost wise...it is alot cheaper.

I didn't see those "maryJanes" this year. When I had them they were called DingBats. So yummy.

Maybe I'll just save what is already hard...like the lolipops, and rockets (mini sweet tarts). And then do a test on the tootsie rolls, and gum.

The kids have a no peanut rule at the school, so I had to buy the boxes of chocolates that are peanut free, and then they get one a day.
I'm still eating Peeps from Easter. ;)

I really shouldn't answer this though. I'll eat or drink anything at anytime if I want it enough. All my friends give me a hard time about it as I've been caught drinking soda in a can that's been in my car for over a month or candy that I find under my desk at work. I'm amazed I haven't had food poisoning more.
ok I work for a company that makes chocolate. Since chocolate contains a lot a wax it will keep for over a year. You need to avoid letting it get soft then cold. That is why you see some with a white coloring. the coloring does not effect the taste but it soes not look good. Keep it cool and it will last.

Now and laters and candy of that sort has to be kept in a air tight container. The chemicals used makes them get hard.
My father was in the candy business. It all depends on how you store it, heat is a killer. Ever had chocolate bloom on your from being heated and then cooled. Yucky.

The softer the candy, the shorter the shelf life, ever had a hard caramel??

Here's a generalized idea on candy shelf life:

BUBBLE GUM - Most gum such as Bubble Yum or Bubblicious Bubble Gum is good for anywhere from four (4) to six (6) months and this guideline applies to regular gums such as Chiclets, Dentyne, Trident, et al

CANDY BARS - The average shelf for a chocolate candy bar is anywhere up to six (6) months, however, certain candies such as Necco Wafers, Smarties, Starburst Fruit Chews or Nerds can last considerably longer due to their consistency.

GUMMI CANDY - Most gummi candies such as gummi bears, peachy penguins, strawberry puffs, etc are good for up to (six) months although they will diminish in quality if exposed high temperatures.

JELLY BELLY JELLY BEANS - The manufacturer suggests that the shelf life for Jelly Bellies is up to eight (8) months.

JORDAN ALMONDS (CONFETTI) - We are frequently asked about Jordan Almonds as they are often purchased in advance to be used for celebratory events such as anniversaries, baby showers or weddings.

Although the shelf life is said to be up to five (5) months, we suggest that you do not hold them for longer than two (2) to three (3) months to ensure that they are absolutely fresh.

LOLLIPOPS - Most lollipops have a long shelf life but it is important to remember that exposure to high temperatures can cause the candy to permanently stick to the wrappers.

Although most lollipops can last up to six (6) months, it is important that they are stored in cool environments.

M&M's ® CHOCOLATE CANDIES - According to the manufacturer, the life span of M&M's ® is up to thirteen (13) months providing that it remains in it's factory sealed package and not exposed to heat.

NOVELTY CANDY - Most novelties candies are nothing more than candy such as bubble gum or dextrose encased in a plastic outer shell. The life span of most novelty candies is six (6) to eight (8) months and depends on the type of candy chosen.

UNWRAPPED BULK CANDY - Most unwrapped bulk candies remains fresh for five (5) to six (6) months, however, certain items such as Candy Roll Wafers, Runts,Rock Candy Strings and Candy Blocks will last longer due to their consistency.

Candies such as Good & Plenty, Licorice, Mexican Hats or Red Dollars tend to taste better when fresh and we suggest that you store them for no longer than two (2) months.

Chocolate candies such as Bridge Mix, Chocolate Pretzels, Double Dipped Chocolate Peanuts or Malted Milk Balls tend to have a shorter shelf life and this applies to any candy that has peanuts as one of the ingredients,

WRAPPED BULK CANDY - Most wrapped bulk candy remains fresh for five (5) to six (six) months especially if it is a hard candy such as a Butterscotch Disk, Starlight Mint or Root Beer Barrel.

Softer candies such as Caramel Creams or Brach's Royals have a shorter shelf life due to their consistency.

Certain candies such as Anise Squares, Brach's Ice Blue Mints, Jolly Ranchers or Sour Balls have a much longer shelf life and are ideal for long term use.
...and Atomic Fireballs seem to last forever... 8O

Yes but aren't PEEPS supposed to be "aged"?
I don't know, after living this close to Hershey and having candy off the line I think I've become a candy snob. The stuff off of the shelf in the store seems stale to me.

And Peeps are like fine wine and need to be aged. Maybe Darcy could convert your wine cellar into a Peep cellar!
Peeps MUST have just the right crustiness and chewiness before being consumed. A little Easter grass stuck to the bottem adds to the flavor but is not required.

That was one of my father's lines. I was not a fan! However, to this day my mother loves them......but will only eat the white ones......and apparently those are no longer made. So she pines every Easter.

Six month old Peeps must have an entirely new texture now.......hard. Hard sugar coated marshmellow......blech!

There is a big difference! How fortunate to be able to wiff cocoa every day.
Best Tootsie Roll I ever had... Joan brought a full-size one back with her from a trip to the factory or a trade show of some sort. Hmmmm I never knew that they weren't supposed to be so firm!
You cannot eat Peeps right out of the box. The box has to opened and left on the counter so the Peeps harden. Crunchy outside, soft inside. Now that's a PEEP!

For you Peep lovers, this is one of the funniest websites evah:

Did you ever see wha happens to a PEEp when you put it in the microwave for 30 seconds
Can someone hand me a napkin to wipe the vomit hanging from my mouth. blech!

My kids used to make S'mores out of Peeps and grahm crackers in the microwave!!!!

Can someone do this and take a picture  Just curious... :plead:

Thanks SheepieBoss for all the shelf life info, this is a tremdous help, I'm gonna go and sort through and save it in ziploc and then a container and store it for the kids to share either at the end of Dec or wait until Feb.
FWIW, here Hershey starts making the Halloween candy around
Easter. Sorry if I let the cat out of the bag... :? 'course most of it
is shipped. What we get around here is pretty fresh, especially if
you have a source at the factory. 8)

I actually like them really fresh, really gooey. I begin the microwaving method after a few months because i don't like them hardened as much.

Mt favorite peep Web site of all time about peeps is this one:
http://www.lordofthepeeps.com/lotp/fotp.html

It's the whole Lord of the Rings story acted out by Peeps. It's even better than the Lego bible reenactment!

Hey! Speaking of peeps, does anyone remember the chocolate
covered marshmallow candy? They had some for Christmas
and some for Easter. I have only seen the individually wrapped
ones in the last few years. We used to buy them in a pack of
8 or 10 I think. Great frozen - one of my all time favorites.

Do they still make these?? (the ones we used to get weren't
Hershey's so I don't know who to ask)

I want you all to know that this thread is KILLING ME. I am on my 21st day of a SUGAR FREE diet :( I've been having alot of migraines for the last year and discovered that sugar is one of my triggers, so I've given it up :( :( :( :( :(
 I'm slobber over something I can't eat
DRIBBLE , dribble, dribble................ :lmt:

Absolutely. My mom buys out all drug stores the day after Christmas and Easter. Russell Stover makes 'em.
At Easter Walgreen's (large chain o' drugstores in the Midwest) sells the choco-covered marshmallow eggs in the egg carton. 99 cents. Delicious. I don't know who makes them, but they are some off brand.

Just in case they should happen upon this, I LOVE MY FACTORY SOURCE PERSON!!! That should keep me in fresh candy for a while.
Even the stuff in the stores around here goes through distributors so it gets shipped out to some central loading place and then comes back. :x
I saw all kinds of candy covered on the thread (thanks for all the info)...but what about Smarties candies?...how long is the shelf life for them?
Just guessing here but I'd say that smarties would last longer than my life expectancy in a sealed package stored away from heat and light. :D

But seriously, probably 2 years. Is there any kind of code
on the package? If you post it, I can help decode it for you.

I totally hear you!!!
Candy lasts about half an hour around here!!!

Are you super disciplined to still have Easter Peeps or do you have a case of them? I like the robin eggs the best at Easter, not a big fan of Peeps. Sorry.
To the "one" who has a mother who only eats the "white peeps"....they now sell white ones at Christmas as snowmen...don't know if this is still relevant to you or not. God Bless!!!
They have peeps for every holiday now!
Ha ha! I love this place!
I saw a tv program on how they make peeps. It was cool to see all the bright coloured chicks in rows going down the conveyor belt into packages. My teeth were burning watching the program!
I personally like to freeze most of my candies and eat them while they are frozen...peeps especially.
