My old man is sick.

Hi, I'm new here. My Old English Sheepdog, Sam, was ten years old in April. I took him to the vet today, and I don't know why I'm posting except that I'm hoping someone else has gone through this.

He's not neutered, and today we were told he has a testicular tumour (one of his testicles is huge), and that his teeth need surgery, too (some of them need to be removed).

Generally, he's seemed much more run-down these days, hates to go for walks (we thought it was the heat and trimmed his coat off, but no), drinks far too much. So the vet wants to take a blood test, to see if he can have the operations he needs. If not... well, there goes my best buddy of ten years, I assume.

Anyone else had to do this, and does anyone have any knowledge of what the options are if his kidneys/liver aren't strong enough for anaesthetic, beyond my worst fears?

Hi

I feel for you concerning your situation with Sam. While I don't have the medical info you may need I wanted to offer my support. My Shaggy passed away in March at age 15. At 9 she was diagnosed with immune defenciency thrombocytopenia...a disorder of the immune system. I was told very few dogs walk away from it but she went on to live another 6 more years.

The advice I would give you is to erase all doubt from your mind - get an opinion from your vet and then get another one if possible. Sadly, money is a huge factor when it comes to this but I know from the passing of one of my other dogs you want no regrets later. You want to be able to tell yourself that with all the knowledge you had, you made the best possible decision - no matter what that decision may be.

My heart goes out to you and Sam. I'll be praying for you both.

Our dog Jake had a Certoli tumor of a hidden testicle. It produced huge amounts of female hormone, caused his hair to thin, his nipple to enlarge, and he became lethargic.

After the surgery he was much better, though we nearly lost him from the surgery itself, which was into the abdomen to get the non-descended testicle.

If those are the symptoms of your Sam, then I hope you will see a dramatic improvement after the surgery.

Good luck, and PLEASE keep us (me) informed along the way. I'd like to hear your experiences.

Thanks.

EDIT: The correct spelling for this tumor is "Sertoli" not "Certoli"

I'm sorry to hear about Sam's illness. Hopefully, the lethargy is from the tumor and not due to kidney/liver involvement and they will be able to operate. I'll keep Sam in my thoughts and prayers!

This should be a lesson for all of us to neuter/spay!!!!!

Part of the lethargy may also be from the teeth having problems. One of our cats had to have several teeth removed. Once that was done she reverted to her old whirlwind of energy.

Also, check to see if there is anything you can do to boost Sam's immune system. If you don't use a holistic veterinarian, check to see if there is one locally that can guide you.

Good luck and please keep us informed as to how Sam is doing.
hi

Cas,one of my oes, had testicular cancer when he was 9 years old he also had bad kidneys .Luckily the vet said he was well enough to opperate on .Before the operation he was really showing his age ,didn't like to go for long walks ,went off his food and his coat had gone very thin.
After the operation he was like a young dog again and he lived another 4 years.
Needless to say after going through what i did with cas all my dogs are now neutered.

I will be thinking of you and sam.
Thanks so much for all your support and advice :) I haven't been able to respond until now because there wasn't enough info, but he's since been for his tests.

First test was blood, and the result wasn't what the vet had been hoping for. He asked for a urine sample, and said his kidneys were borderline, but he was willing to attempt the operation with the dog hooked up to a drip to keep him going. :? I'm not sure what to make of this, it makes it seem so risky, but he can have his op.
