It is hard to stop! I found it was best to do a little on each side at a time to make sure he winds up symmetrical after all the stripping. The first time I did it, like you, I was having so much fun, I took way too much off on one side and poor Clyde had a bit of a dent so I had to take way too much off to get both sides to match again!
Which Mars Stripping Rake/Comb did you get?

What size/how many teeth?

I feel a visit to Pet Supply House coming on.... I'll be sure to check out the Chris Christenson pin brush for the user who asked in another chat.
Medium-- 10 blades.

I had mine in hand the other night but decided to hold off. Clyde was conked out from day care so he let me work on him. I don't want to use it until I have to!
Looking at the catalog, there are number of blades 10 to 30, XX-Fine to Medium, Coarse and X-Coarse.

Which one did you get?

Thanks!

Oops we must've been posting at the same time!

Thanks, ButterStotch.
Stacey (Willowsprite) steered me in the direction of the Mar Stripping comb for Dudley...and man has it been a lifesaver. It is actually enjoyable to groom him now.. it so easy.
Any special instructions on how to use? I understand that it should be done after brushing out, to avoid taking out a chunk if you hit a mat.

Do you then just basically comb it through the hair?
Do you work on it in lines, like line-brushing or do an overall rake-through?

Barkley doesn't have much of an undercoat yet, but it's good to be prepared!

Thanks,

I would suggest doing it after a bath & blow-dry if you do that regularly enough. If not, after a brush-out would be fine. Definitely is easier to do with a non-tangled coat.

Best way to do it is in sections. Work from top to bottom - always in the direction that the coat grows/falls. It's a slightly weird sensation for the dog, but don't worry, it doesn't hurt them.It might take some time for them to get used to it though.

Oh, and I find it easier just to do an overall rake through. You don't really need to separate the hair like line brushing.
Butterscotch, which catalog are you referring to? I want to invest in one of these. Allies fur is getting sooo much thicker and coarser, I guess her adult coat is coming in? PLus she is always hot, would love to thin her out. When do you suggest I start using it on her? Is 8 mths old to soon? Or do I wait for the adult coat to come all the way in? Sorry so many questions! All new to me....Thanks, Chris

I got mine from jbpet.com. I started doing it on Clyde when his undercoat starting causing a lot of mats and the groomer suggested it. She was the one who introduced me to it. I think Clyde was around 10 months or so but I may have been able to avoid some of the mats in the first place had I started a bit earlier. I'm no expert but I would think that you can remove the undercoat to your liking whenever it comes in.

I know Lisa strips Kelsey-- Lisa, what do you think? Is there any reason why she wouldn't want to start now?
It looks like they have it for $28 on amazon.

Mars Coat King Stripper 6 Blade Coarse
Mars Coat King Stripper 10 Blade Medium
Mars Coat King Stripper 12 Blade Fine
Mars Coat King Stripper 16 Blade X-Fine
Mars Coat King Stripper 20 Blade X-Fine

[I stuck in an assortment of them. -Ron.]
8 Months is fine if you are having problems with matting, you are also at the stage of the Junior coat coming through, so lots of clumping happening.

Make sure she is completely knot/matt free then run it very lightly over the coat in gentle layers, putting any pressure on the mars rake and you just slice the coat. Start with lifting the coat and work from underneath, one gentle pull downwards, then bring down another layer and again pull the rake gently through the coat, keep going in small layers, that way if you do make a mistake you are not leaving a huge hole in the coat.

It will help the change come through quicker too as you are getting rid of the old puppy coat & fluff and allowing the junior coat through faster.

Then just use as a maintenance about once every 1-2 months to keep the undercoat not so thick and easier then to maintain a longer look without as much work.

My Mars Coat King is the 20 blade one, nice and wide then to do one easy down stroke and remove a lot of undercoat in one gentle sweep.

This is Kelsey, still the long shaggy look, but undercoat all stripped out, not bad for a girl who is nearly 12 and only takes me a very short time to groom her through once a week and with the undercoat gone she does not have too many knots when I brush her.

Believe it or not this is the face of the Stuffie terminator
She looks nice! Definitely not the face of a fluffy terminator :D .
What is the difference between the medium 10 (ButtersStotch) blade and the 20 fine (Lisaoes) blade?

I'm considering getting one of these through amazon of course.
The 10 blade one is probably spaced wider apart in the blades. They both do the same job, with the 20 blade one it is finer together the blades but with a lot more width to it, so covers a bigger area in one stroke, removing more of the undercoat in one go.

The course or fine blade does not really mean anything, does not mean for course coat or fine coat, just more blades and the spacings between the blades.

This is what is written about a 30 blade one fairly much the same as the 20.

"Superfine styles for finishing thick shaggy coats. The same as the 20 blade, only more blades to reduce the time taken. Excellent for larger breeds."

There all good all the sizes.
On the Mars website it specifies that a 6-12 blade is recommended for long coats, and the higher numbers for short coats.
One important thing that Mandy pointed out to me when I visited last weekend-- it's an all or nothing situation. If you're gonna strip, keep stripping, otherwise, when the new coat grows in, it'll be more apt to catch and make knots. It was something that I never thought of but made perfect sense when she pointed it out.
I know this is an old post, I have a stripper brush looks like the mars brush. So I am chicken, do I just part like line brushing and brush though, how many swipes do i do, anything will help.
What a grooming tool! I have read quite a bit on the Forum about grooming and decided I had to do something soon before Baillee's coat got way out of control. I just received my Mars Coat King (10 blade medium) as suggested here by Butterstotch and and all I can say is "it is incredible!" What a great job it does at getting out the undercoat. Baillee, who has been known to enjoy his grooming while on the run actually sat for me. This will take a while but at least he is content with it and it does a great job. Now, I will be ordering one of the 27 mm Gold Chris Christenson brushes and Bailee should be looking like the Prom King in no time. :D
Watch which CC brushes you order, my 27 CC is for finishing and fluffing only. If you use it to line brush you'll bend the pins and ruin it. A good choice is the one with wooden pins, I love mine.

What's up, She Hulk? I've had the same 27mm CC for a long time and it's never had any bent pins. You must be working out.

Seriously, which one bends? Are you sure it isn't the 35mm? Those I can see bending.
Is the product a Mars Coat King or a Mars stripping comb? They are two different products and I am deciding which to order.
Thanks!

Oh she is beautiful - look at that face!! and those dark eyes!!

How do you keep her mouth so white?
I bent pins on my CC 27mm too, also bends on the all systems 27 mm but not as fast?

Holly are you left handed? Someone at a show said I bend pins because I'm a lefty LOL

I've tried the wooden pin one, not sure if I like it or not... I should order one soon and spend more time using it, I've heard it makes a big difference on the coat since it breaks less?

ok so is this the one? It doesn't offer the 10 inch medium. If you look at the drop down, it only offer a few sizes..... Maybe I have the wrong one? :?
Kelsey sure was a beautiful girl! So hard to believe she's been gone almost a year now.   Hugs to you, Lisa.
I have the 27mm fusion brass in the full size and the smaller size, that's the one that bends  But I am She Hulk and darn proud of it :D

Nita, great avatar![/b]
