Is this crossing the line or fair game?

From South Park

I think it's terrible. I'd hate to see this if I was his wife or kids.

South Park is known for crossing any and all lines and boundaries.

While I don't "like" some of what they do, and I think it is distasteful and most certainly too soon, I wonder how Steve Irwin would have felt about it?

He had a good sense of humor... but is this meant in the sense of humor, or just plain hurtful?

Either way, I think they missed the mark this time. It's not funny IMO.
I agree with all those points.

His family is still grieving over this though, so I can't imagine being his daughter and hearing about this at school.

edit: this was found on the drugereport and cnn.
I could understand if his family and friends found it distasteful or disrespectful, but because South Park does this to everything it almost seems okay to me. They are not singling Steve Irwin out or making a special example of just him...so it doesn't really seem like an attack to me.
I think that it is in poor taste, but it's South Park...so you know when you watch it it isn't going to be in the highest taste no matter what.
Totally agree that it is in bad taste... but when watching South Park you should know that's what you're gonna get.

I find it odd that he's drinking a Corona.... hmm.

I also agree on it being in bad taste.

:lmt: Shouldn't he be drinking a Foster's?
The whole "joke" was that it was too soon and that the costume (they were at Satan's Halloween party) wasn't funny. Satan was kicking him out and then it turned out it wasn't a costume. Then Satan kicked him out because he wasn't wearing a costume.
I think when you become a public figure, you open yourself up to being a parody. Life or death doesn't seem to have boundaries. Southpark is definitely is that kind of show that crosses the line all of the time.Whether it's in poor taste or not, they certainly have a huge fan base that loves this kind of material, so I doubt they will stop anytime soon.
Heck, Im not a public figure and I had a lovely toilet parody made of me
I think it is a cruel thing to do to the family barely 8 weeks after his death.
I don't watch it so I can't comment about the show itself, but as far as public figures go........

Its a career they chose, but what gives the public the right to poke fun at their trials and tribulations? There's enough humor in their job performance (some), that we don't need jokes about their sorrows.

I think its horrible that someone writing a script for a show can't come up with anything better than what they do now days. I guess its a combination of their lack of talent as a writer, and the public's acceptance of what they present to us as entertainment.

I guess our acceptance puts the blame back on us, rather than the writer.

mouthypf
C'mon, it's kind of funny!!!

Do you guys really think that Steve Irwin would have been upset by this? His whole career on TV was "over the top" with the animals. I can even imagine that when he got speared, he was thinking about what kind of irony it was that he ended up dying from an animal.

The whole show is one big joke. Is the show twisted & dimented?? Yes! Would I want my children watching it if I had any? No, but it's on late enough at night that kids shouldn't be up anyhow.

I understand that Steve Irwin did a lot for conservation & absolutely think he should go down in history for his love of animals!

I think those who love him would. Just seeing him with a stingray through his heart so soon seems wrong. It just happened. I can't imagine flipping the channel and seeing him on tv like that.
What is funny is that I hate South Park, and I wasn't a Steve Irwin fan, but I don't have a problem with the picture of him with a stingray in his chest, while a lot of people who like South Park and liked Irwin do have a problem with it.

Maybe it's how much you liked Irwin that makes it funny or not.
So is it because it's "Too Soon?"

You know, it's still too soon for Abraham Lincoln assassination jokes
Johnny Carson would try one every few months, it would always bomb, and he'd look over to Ed McMahon and say "Still too soon!"
I think that's the key, it is just too soon.

I thought Steve Irwin was aweosme, and I do happen to like South Park... but as many have stated, this is the norm for South Park, it probably won't shock it's viewers in the least.

As far as how Irwin's family feels about it... well... again, too soon I think, but in the long run, they probably would think about how Steve would've felt about it.
I am not a Steve Irwin fan and I think it was in poor taste and definately crossed the line. Not because of Steve but because of his family. I cannot imagine losing a husband and father and turning on the TV and having to see such a gruesome sight. I don't think there is anyone who doesn't sense the irony of his death but what kind of cruel and viscious person would turn that irony into humor so soon after his death at the expense of his wife and children as well as those that loved him?

Agreed. They weren't making fun of him-- it was actually making fun of the fact that most people would agree that it wouldn't be funny because it was too soon.

Actually, if I were to die by getting stabbed by a sea creature, I'd be flattered to be immortalized by South Park in that manner. There's a lot worse things that they could do. Tom Cruise is alive and he got it much, much worse.
I was thinking that it was too soon and too rough until I read the context that it was in.

I think that that makes it kind of funny and I actually liked Steve Irwin's craziness and the conservation efforts that he made.

One of my goals in life is to be immortalized on the Simpsons. How rockin' would that be? If I had to die in some weird way to make it happen, that would kind of suck.
His wife was apparently "devastated" by this and vey scared that her two young children would see it... which I think is very sad.
I know I'm going to catch flak for this but here it goes -
His wife is devasted by the effect of tacky humor on her children, but it's not too soon to make an Animal Planet star out of her daughter? Frankly, I would think that working in front of the cameras would be more a reminder of Steve than some random tasteless joke. I was really surprised when I heard that Steve's daughter was going to continue filming her animal series.
Really? I thought it was awesome, and a great way to keep her mind off of her father. Well, sad thoughts. I think this is the best way to keep the memory alive in a positive way, and keep their lives moving. :)
Here an update on the series--

There not airing that episode in Australia as it is a disgrace to the memory of Steve Irwin, especially as his young family is still coming to grips with what happened. Only been 5 weeks since they lost him in tragic cirumstances. BAD TASTE as far as I am concerned.

Have heard on the news in Australia too, that some people are dressing up in a costume of a safari shirt with a stingray sticking out of there chest for Halloween, all because of this South Park episode  I think it is too early after his death to be doing this, most Aussies have a great sense of Humour, but personally I think this is going a bit too far on someone that has just been recently buried & for his family a real insult as they are still mourning this great loss of a very special & unique person. :(
I read in an article that they are waiting until next year to air the episode. Not sure if it's true or not, but that's what it said. :( People are dressing up as Steve Irwin in the US as well.

I highly doubt that no one would have thought of this costume without the South Park episode. The South Park writers are not more gruesome than millions of people out there...they just have a tv show to display it on.

South Park treated this tragedy like every other tragedy. I was shocked when I heard that his daughter was continuing on with her animal show...it seems to soon to me. Even if it is in memory of her father...if I was her mother I would postpone the taping to give her some time to heal.
They announced yesterday they are not going on with the show as planned, they are taking a one year hiatus.
I think the show would be a positive outlet for their grief and a help in coping with the tragedy. I don't think it is exploitive at all (anymore than ANY program using a child actor is exploitive).
