incessant barking

Our year and half old oes barks continuously when in a car. He goes absolutely nuts! Doesn't matter if the ride is 5 minutes or 5 hours--barks the entire time. Because we thought the problem was that he is visually overwhelmed (barks at overpasses and passing vehicles) we've tried crating him and covering the crate with a blanket--he just tries to pull on the blanket in between the bars and chew--but misses few barks while he's doing it. Help! We want to take him with us, but he's driving us nuts. He's housebroken thank heavens, and we had two OES previously who were wonderful and lived to ages 12 and 10--but I'm really thinking number 3 was a big mistake. Hope someone has some ideas! Thanks in advance.

I've got one that is exactly the same and I have tried everything, including what you've described. She completely flips out -- barking, panting, drooling, shaking.

What has finally worked for me is physically holding and soothing her. I keep her in a harness and I hold her tight and sometime grasp her muzzle or squeeze the back of her skull a bit. I also feed her a steady stream of food and treats. Being on a month long road trip has helped. . .

Now, I do about 10 minutes of firm soothing and she settles into heavy panting with just intermittent barking.

Good luck!
If the holding tight & soothing is the solution for you, a long time back I posted about this alternative therapy car harness thing that basically puts pressure on the shoulder blades. I'll see if I can find the post, but it's been over a year now but I wonder if it would be something that works for you guys.

Val, btw., are you home now? I'm pining for a doggie playdate for neuter boy...
Yes I haven't forgotten about the anxiety wrap. I intend to order one when I get home. Holding her tight is the key. It really helps although she still pants and whimpers.

We're in Boulder now. I keep meaning to post an update but I've been visiting with people and so I haven't had those long, lonely nights in hotel rooms to do it. . . Maybe tonight. . .
You could go visit the Johnsons and Smokin' while you are in Colorado!
