Pillows...How do I pick out new pillows?

Tony and I finally bit the bullet and bought a new bed last night. It will be delivered Thursday, and I'm so excited!!! Our bed is about 15 years old, and every morning I wake up with back pain.

We picked a Serta Perfectday with a mid size pillow top. We will have a 30 "comfort" guarantee, which is a pretty nice thing.

I was so excited last night, I couldn't sleep, feeling how horrid our current bed is, and knowing its on its way out.

Ok...now....our pillows are old too. So...off to the garbage for them!

I sleep on my side, back, front all over! Maybe its cuz the bed is so crappy I just can't find a good position.

But...how the heck do I pick out new pillows??? What has been your experience and what are your recommendations?

Thanks!!! (We picked the Serta because of the sheep...and the commercial with Rufus the OES!) (just kidding!)

well, personally I hate down pillows...I hate being enveloped in fluff.....I like a nice cheap fiber filled pillow....lol...at bed bath and beyond, i got a king size one for 10 dollars....honestly, its the most comfortable pillow ive ever had!! besides the fact that i get a new pillow every other yr or so, i dont like to spend a lot of money on them.....
What happened to the Select Comfort option? Guess you opted out, huh? You know my story about the pillows so I'm not much help. Sorry! Enjoy the new bed!
I don't like down pillows either. No matter how full they are at first, the down always scoots to one side or the other and I end up sleeping with my head in a "hole" and feathers up around my ears.

I do like my memory foam pillows, though. Particularly the ergonomic one.
We thought about the sleep number, but it seemed to confusing to me (I'm old!).

We are both happy with the same firmness of this bed, and I really liked that we have a month for a complete exchange if its not what we hoped for.

I think for now, we may go with Darcy's fiber fill pillow suggestion. I don't like too fluffy pillows either.

Stacy, we can have sleepovers and try each others new beds!!!!! But tell Foz, we won't have sheep, cuz we have a Serta!
I'm just the opposite. I need a high quality down pillow to be comfortable. I love the ploofy! Really, I'm just a down girl... I love down pillows, down comforters, I'd LOVE a down feather bed!

You need to find what feels the most comfortable for you and hubby. Mike sleeps with a minimum of 4 pillows every night! We have all 3 "major" types on the bed... all down, feather and down, and the flatter fiber pillows.

I'd consider how you like to sleep. If you like a softer texture and more elevated head position, go with down. If you like some resistance, and a slightly raised position, feather and down is great. For a firmer, flatter position try the fiber or foam pillows.

good luck.

Personal expperience product plug... I L O V E the down products by "Pacific Coast" comapny. The twin comforter I bought from them is used every day as a throw blanket (I'm a freeze baby) it takes all sorts of abuse, stays lofty, and besides being a bit dirty, is in as great of shape as the day I bought it back in college. I can't say enough good things about this companys products or customer service dept!
I love down everything! LOL

I buy new pillows frequently too, and I have about 7 or 8 on my bed. LOL My husband is lucky if he gets one.
OVERSTOCK.COM has the BEST prices for pillows, and as long as it has great reviews by more than 10 people, I've NEVER been disappointed. Funny because that is my next purchase.
Whay spend a lot of money on pillows if you have sheepdogs :lmt:

So they have something comfortable to lay on of course! Really, some days Pip uses more of our pillows then we do. Half the time, I end up with a pillow corner and Pip gets the rest of mine!

but I know I wouldn't want hot breath that close to my face esp. combined with my morning breath.[/quote]
My Pirate HATES to sleep on the bed! I think he gets too hot. Keira, on the other, loves to sleep on the bed and she hogs the blankets! EEK! :excited: When did I become a slave to dogs???

I bought some nice fiber filled pillows on my way home from work. They were about $15 each. We'll sleep on them tonight, and if we don't like them, I can always use extra pillows for company.
Congratulations on the new bed! Sealy and Serta are two brands I know from personal experience are fantastic!

COSTCO has great pillows. Different kinds and really great prices. They come in packs of two and I bought two king size pillows for either $20 or $40. It was some time ago so that's why I don't remember the price, but they are wonderful!
We are down pillow people. All my kids use down pillows. My daughter Lisa even has a down mattress overlay - loves to snuggle into it. 3 of us have down comforters. I put them in duvet covers or IKEA "sacks" . They stay cleaner and just have to wash the down once a yr.
I use a flat feather pillow over my ergonomic formed pillow. Todd just uses a loftier feather pillow.
I'm a Tempur-Pedic convert. The pillow came with the bed and it is wonderful. Prior to that, I had the dense foam pillow from Select Comfort and I actually like that better. But it wore out.

I like firm pillows so down is out for me.
Dawn,

How do you wash your down comforters?
Mine (the one you guys voted for from O ;) ) can go in the wash&dryer ...no problem. Some of them I've found say dry clean only.

I think most down comforters have to be dry cleaned. The best way to combat this is to always use a cover (duvet cover, comforter cover or whatever the brand calls it) and then you just take the cover off and toss it in the wash when it gets dirty.
I've always used duvets on my comforters. they still get dirty after a few years though.
I like a very flat pillow, just a couple of inches max and definitely not fluffy or shape conforming.

Imagine a well packed bath towel... just a little give.
