English Sheep Dog Mix STRAY NEEDS HOME!!! Help!

There is a wonderful English Sheep-Mix stray I feed every night in my neighborhood. He/she is too shy to come out in the daytime or to me at night when I see him/her. However, this same shyness has kept him/her alive and away from animal control. The people in my neighborhood are sooo anti-dog! It is just a matter of time before they call the pound (who only comes in daylight hours) or they scare the dog away! Last night a man saw me leave food out and said, "Who assigned you to feed strays?? I think you must be poisoning dogs. How wierd to feed stray dogs!" and tonight another problem: a car was shining its bright lights on the dog. I stopped and asked if the man was concerned about the dog and he said, "Yea, that's a coyote and someone has to do something about it! (No, this was NOT a coyote! This WAS an English sheep dog mix!!)

Any tips on 1) first finding a home for this dog and 2) getting the dog to come to me? I have too, too many dogs/cats now so I MUST have a place to keep this dog until placed.

Help, please!

What region do you live in? There are many oes rescue organizations that would help. There is a link to them from the main site I believe. I'm not sure how you will be able to get him/her to come to you, but I would try at night, when it is quiet out and no one else around.
I live in San Bernardino County, Southern Calif.
Everytime I have ever asked for help from a local rescue they are too overcrowded to take the dog.
You are right, the only time I ever see the dog is at night. Last night he/she was waiting for the food as usual and came a little closer and lingered a little longer before running away when I put the food down.
I would recommend calling your local Humane Society, Vets, Shelters and asking if anyone has reported a dog missing that meets this description. Sadly, they probably didn't - but it's worth a try!

I know that the local Animal Control in my town is very helpful in catching strays (safely trapping them if necessary) and do their best to try and find them suitable homes (regardless of how long it takes). Unfortunately, not all towns are like that. :( You don't like to even think of it - but sometimes strays are better off being humanely euthanized - rather than living on the streets, without shelter, food, medical care, and/or love - and often with the fear/possibility that someone or something may harm them.

Unfortunately, OES Rescue of Southern CA only works with full-bred OES (without tails!) - so they would not be able to offer their services. They may however be able to offer some suggestions at least ???? You could try!

Strays that are so unsocial often are on the lamb for weeks, months! :( By caring about this poor dog like you have, you've probably shown him more love than he's received in his lifetime! Thank you!!! :)

Best of Luck!
Kristen
Wow, I can't believe a rescue would only help purebreds, and only without tails! That is ridiculous!!!
Anyway... you could contact a rescue group that is perhaps not in your area, even if far away MOST rescues care enough to make a little more effort if necessary. I would make all contacts and any arrangements for travel, and then rent a large live trap and bait it with food and treats. Good luck! And thank you for caring about this poor lonely dog. By the way, what does it look like?
I found an ad for someone looking for a home for a sheepie mix, by accident while I was looking for something to show my husband, and I can't help but wonder if this may be the dog you are talking about? It looks like someone was looking to find him a home, but maybe he ran off, or worse, was dumped in your area?

I'm praying that you will be able to find a solution to help this poor dog. Not all Humane Societies have a kill policy and perhaps that is the way to go or sometimes there exist private organizations that assist with this kind of thing or provide alternatives to Shelters. Please don't give up on him/her and thanks for having the heart to getting involved in the first place.

Wishing you all the luck
Marianne
Thanks for your responses. Unfortuantely I haven't found anyone yet interested in giving him/her a home. He/she also has a large companion often seen together that looks like a Border-Collie mix.

It always disappoints me tremendously when 'rescue' people say to call the POUND! I can NEVER understand this!!! NEVER.

PLEASE NEVER CALL ANIMAL CONTROL, or 'SHELTERS' or 'HUMANE SOCIETIES! They kill 280,000,000 dogs and cats every decade! That's the same number of people we currently have in the United States! The massive slaughter has to stop. NO ONE WHO CARES should EVER call them! They have a right to live! The tinyl percentage of dogs that are actuall placed is DISMAL!

People are the WORST enemies of strays BECAUSE they call the pound.
That is the first cause of death to the stray!!! I will do everything I can to keep these dogs and any other cats and dogs I find from 'well meaning' people who will kill them by calling the POUND!

If you want to help animals, instead of calling the pound feed them by leaving food! Place an ad in the paper to find them a home. Pass out flyers 'found' or "needs home". BUT NEVER CALL THE POUND! YOU ARE KILLING THEM!

Did you know the 'medical policies' of most pounds? Mine has a $50 limit. If an animal is injured, the dog catcher (non-trained medically) determines on the spot if the expense will be more than $50 - WHAT ISN'T MORE THAN THAT AT A VETS? If it is more than $50 they kill the animal on the spot. Calling the pound to 'help' an animal is not helpful.
This is NOT the case with ALL POUNDS or Humane Societies, Shelters! Please don't label them all as KILLERS!

If my dog were missing I would call the Pound looking for them - I would want anyone who found him to call the pound or bring him to the pound! I'd want him safe and sound until I could get him!

Please don't scare people into thinking that every pound will KILL an animal that is brought there! That's not true!!!!
Your right Kristen not every shelter is like that. Some animal shelter work with different groups that may even help with medical cost and fostering. The shelter here isn't great but we do what we can. There is a five day wait till they are available for adoptionso people will hopefully call and claim them. We even use petfinder. If they need medical treatment that the county won't pay for, a group here in town ,Saving Our Strays, sometimes are able to help and a couple of us even foster just so the dogs will have more time to find a home. Every time a dog is placed it makes it all worth it.

Our animal control officer HATES when he has to put a dog down!!! And he is always willing to help trap and find a home.

I would rather find my dog at the pound than on the street anyday. I even board Neville at the shelter when i have to.
This is horrible. We can help either with cash or a foster home. We live in Las Vegas. This is absolutely heartbreaking. Please email me directly with what to do. We have a 4 year old sheepie and she would be a great playmate for a dear one who hasn't received love. I actually saw your posting about 1/2 hour after you put it on but had never replied before and didn't know how.
I live in teh same area as you and I have had some wonderful luck with the Gentle Giants rescue in corona or norco, they have come and got dogs like as soon as I have called them, you might try them. wonder if the old english sheepdog rescue has a list of some people that might be willing to adopt the dog that have been waiting for an OESD.
I went through the same exact thing with a Samoyed. I feed her each night while my neighbors were eating their dinner, rain or sine, but set with my back to her so as not to appear aggressive. After she ate she would split. It took a lot of patience but she finally came into my yard to see where I lived. I quickly closed the gate and that was 2 years ago. Now she is my "Baby Love". Dogs have to learn to trust you as a leader. All dogs want to belong and the sheepdog will too. Please, let me know how it goes and if you want to know more how I won Baby over.
Don't count on the OES rescue for that area. It is true, they do not take OES mixes or tailed dogs. I would think that the animal control might be the only ones who could actually capture the dog though
5 Year old post....just FYI.
