TROUBLE HEALING AFTER SURGURY

olive was spayed months ago and there is a scab on her belly from thei. i was worried so i took her to the vet and they said her body does not like the suture knots and she has not seen this often but it is not a huge problem, she gave me antibotics and off we went. the medicine seemed to work...but now the scab is back and bigger. The vet said the next step is to actually cut her back open and tie different sutures. i feel thats a bit envasive so i thought i would ask if any of you have had this experence or had any recomendation like an ointment or something. i just don't want her to be cut open again , but IF it could lead to infection. it is all just very strange. right above the scab there are 2 or 3 soft bubble like pockets and i just wounder now . The vet keeps saying its nothing serious, but if not then why the need to cut her open again. anyway just thought i would ask. :?

Maybe at this point you should check with another vet for a second opinion.
Could you post a picture of it? I know when London was fixed the underskin stitches started to come up through her skin and we had to have them pulled out, but once that was done it healed up ok.

How's Olive? :?
I took olive back to the vet and a different one, but they say the same thing. its an alergic reaction, and under the csab there is no broken skin just red and irritated. the doc even says the scab needs to stay off. :? yuck! i will be picking at it now so air can get to it and hopefully heal. othwerwise we will need to fix the sutures. i must explain this has been there for a while now and she is acting fine it does not hurt her at all i think it bothers me more. :( :| so for now i am giving her antibotics...again and puting a cleaner on her skin where it is irritated. Now if only i can make her sit still long enough to nurse her properly  anyway i guess she ids fine to answer questions. i will only let myself be concerned if this doesn't work and they start talking surgury. Are there such things as dog vitamins? mayby i should try the natural aproach :phew:
Our dog Zoe had the same exact experience. She was spayed and she would get sores from biting at the site. We took her to the vet who said she was allergic to the suture material and he gave her antibiotics. We waited a long time and still she didn't heal up. We took her again and got more antibiotics and were told to keep her from biting. We put a t-shirt on her and used Panolog ointment. She had lumps along the incision and we were concerned. Then finally it went away. It took about four months!! Have patience and keep Olive from irritating the incision.
THANKS Gacks,
once the scab fell off i was able to see just pink skin underneath. She is antibotics again and the doc made the dosage a bit stronger. They think that will do the trick. Thanks for responding it sounds like your situation was the same. i will just be patient.
I have heard of that before and it can be a real problem. The main issue is that the allergic response with the sutures can cause an inflammation that prevents the wound from healing. You can actually (in rare cases) wind up with a wound dehiss (split open). Can happen in people as well as animals.

Good luck with healing!!!
split oper..... 8O really. i will really watch it now. The medicine seems to help though, but it is not making the bubbles go away si i am still slightly worried, but i will just keep asking th evet. anyway she acts fine and it causes her no pain so i am glad for that.
Crashy (our jr kity girl) had the same issue when she was spayed (christina doesn't go there anymore). Remember to ask your vet for non dissolvable sutures if she ever needs to go in again. The newer dissolvable kind seem to have a much higher incidence of allergy issues in animals! My vet uses the old fashioned sutures, and we've never had an issue.
I had my 5 yr old spayed about 6 wks ago she also still has a scab and lumps under the skin. No redness or irritation! Don t know what to do Vet said its Ok as long as there is no redness or oozing????
It might be a lumpy suture job of the sutures that are in the abdominal layers under the skin.
But, if you do have questions, ask your vet. They did the job and should be able to address any concerns you may have. and that includes after care.
If the vet isn't concerned, then relax. Dogs react differently to the suture material. Several of mine could not tolerate it and developed lumps that never went away. As long as the wound is healed and no sign of infection, they are fluid filled tissue sacs that may or may not be reabsorbed. Paige was a real mess on her belly from initial licking. (always done when I wasn't around.......she was sneaky) Indeed there were bits of suture material that could not be removed, ever. Trust me I tried
How is Olive? I fortunately never had this problem. But I would follow what the Vet tells me and if the antibiotics are working, great. I would be leery about opening it up again - unless the infection is there and can't be helped with the meds. Get well soon Olive!
