A fire by us last night!

I was getting ready to go to work last night, and was in the kitchen packing my lunch. I looked out the window and saw tons of black smoke, then flames leaping! The slough next to us was on fire. The grass, cat tails and peat were burning. I was supposed to leave at 6:30, to be at work by 7pm. Todd and son Travis were both at work, and I didn't want to leave with the dogs in the house and all the sheep and horses here. I went in later, after a neighbor came over to watch and make sure everything was safe. We made the Mankato news at 10 pm, lead story. This is the link to see the pictures and short video clip. - www.keyc.tv
They said it was either arson or someone careless w/ a cigarette.

Then as I was driving to work, I came across a car/semi accident. The car's driver was admitted on our unit (we are ortho/neuro/trauma) a bit after I got to work. Apparently the semi pulled out on the hwy in front of her, and there was another vehicle in the lane next to her and she plowed into the back of the semi going 70 mph. Incredibly, she only has a distal tib/fib fracture and a seatbelt bruise. Right foot of course- from slamming on the brake and then smashing her car. Her car is crunched, I don't know how she made it out. It looks like the front end is 1/3 the length it should be. The front tires were blown off the car.

What a night! 8O

That's a busy night/day!

Seat belts work! Maybe they ought to make brake pedals break away with the brakes fully engaged when that much force is applied to the pedal.

What a video! Your description made it sound small, the video makes it look downright scary! Was your home one of the two the firefighter was talking about being in danger?

(Did anyone else notice that the news anchor and the firefighter look like the same guy?)
They really don't look the same. Under the soot, Tom (fire fighter) is a freckled strawberry blonde - and the son of the local hardware store owners!

Yeah, the fire was REALLY scary. I have never been that close to a real fire, especially one where our farm was so close! There are 2 farm sites (us and the neighbors). The road runs past both and we are both on high ground. The slough and lakes arc in a "c" shape around behind our places and back out to the road on either side. We have joked when we get alot of rain in the spring that we may need to canoe out!
What a night! I'm glad you're safe. I couldn't see the video so I"ll try again later.
That is scarey, thank God everything is ok. We delt with the fires this past spring and summer near by and it is frightening. Now you have to deal with the smoke, yuk. Just take care of yourselves.
What a scary night!
I am glad your home is ok and the woman driving the car.
We lost a high schooler yesterday. On his way to lunch, in a hurry, possibly racing another car.

The car tapped two cars and hit a pole, knocking it to a 45 degree angle to the ground. The car formed a 90-degree angle - the front facing 12 o'clock and the back facing 9 o'clock.

The passenger may survive. It is possible that he is also one of our former students, we don't know his name yet.

So hug your kids in Mark's memory.
Boy you have had one heck of a night. 8O

Know how scary fires are, we last thursday had a day of 36c and 240 fires broke out across the state. The closest to us was up in the Mountains behind us. Hottest October day for over 100 years. It is spring here, so we still have the hottest weather to come, most of Australia is still suffering terrible drought, we are on stage 2 water restrictions and the worse is still to come.

Last thursday there was fires in South Australia, 6 lit by an arsonist, Tasmania had 1000 homes threatened there on the same day and a few weeks ago people up in Sydney lost there garage, the house was damaged and the fire took all her dog stuff. She got out OK with her 2 OES and family and at the moment is living with friends till the house is repaired & borrowing grooming equipment so she can keep her dogs up to date.

We are in for one hell of a summer, very frightening, my husband is this weekend up at the farm, attaching the fire hoses to the tanks, clearing guttering and slashing the paddocks, removing the wood pile for the open fires away from the house in readiness for a dreadful fire season. Everywhere is like a tinder box, so dry, even at home the grass is brown and dry, we are not allowed to water lawns.
