Chummie Deja Vu

Well, after more tests this neurologist seemed surprised to admit that she has not yet determined what is causing Chummie's symptoms. She said her spine looks fine. She joked Chum's spine is probably in better shape than her own. That's great but that leaves me with two very serious neurological events without an explanation. The Vet seemed a bit baffled and caught offguard and she was charmingly candid about it. She has not yet been able to reach Chum's Philly doc to compare notes but I think she is going to suggest more prednisone to handle the symptoms while the cause remains a mystery.

I left her at the hospital another night because I think the rest is good for her. Hopefully she will improve enough to enjoy the rest of the journey ahead of us.

Oh goodness, Val. We are thinking of you.

On another note, how was the wedding?
Val, we are keeping all paws and fingers crossed for Chum.
I can feel your frustration. But at least if they start her on the prednisone again, she'll be okay for the trip home.

BTW, how long will the return trip take you?

Big hugs to that sweet girl, and Maggie too!! :hearts:
I hope Chum gets the rest that's needed for the trip. Sigh...

Hugs to you! This must be making you so stressed. :(
Thinking of you and hope all will be OK, at least the prednisone will hopefully give her a bit more mobility. Gawd how frustrating, at least she sounds like a wonderful vet, compared to the other #####(yes I did let fly with a swear word  ) you saw. You are both in our thoughts and we are keeping fingers and paws crossed for chum girl.
I'm sorry to hear you don't have any answers yet....
Did the neurologist actually do any tests to do with her brain?
Sending get well wishes to Chummie. Hang in there Val.
I am thinking about you guys and hoping that it's nothing serious and she just might need a rest.

Give her kisses from Murph and Dud and a big one for Maggie to.
I'm thinking of you girls!
Well, the tests didn't show any spinal cord lesions, herniated disks, etc. which is good but leaves the cause somewhat mysterious.

The two neurologists both seem to think Chum has some sort of auto-immune disease that causes her system to go haywire periodically. For those following this saga, you may recall that had been the diagnosis before Chum's front leg atrophy led them to think it was cancer.

It means that the fact that both of these episodes occured while being boarded is probably not a coincidence. They think she encounters some kind of bug (bacteria or virus) that coupled with the stress of an unfamiliar environment causes her immune system to overreact and the nerves along her spinal column to become inflamed. The inflammation impairs her movement because the messages can't get through the noise. They said wht they are describing is comparable to lupus in humans.
How is she doing today?
What can be done to treat that or prevent her from picking up another bug?
That's very interesting and makes perfect sense given all the known factors.

So...how's she doing now? Any improvement? What is the recommend course of treatment?

Please give sweet Chumley a kiss from me. I still smile everytime I picture her running around the corner of the cabin and up the steps to visit me while I was cooking dinner. :hearts:
Today, she is so happy to be back with us. She is smiling and much more mobile on carpet although still a little unstable and can't handle smooth surfaces at all. But she is in very good spirits and keeps getting up to greet the people (the kids, the kids friends, my friends, etc.) I wish she wouldn't but I take it as a good sign. She sees the signs that we are packing up to go and she's very eager to get back in the car. 8O

The docs think she just may need to be on low-dose steroids every other day forever -- and maybe I need to be prepared to increase the dose should she need to be boarded in the future. It didn't happen the second time I left her at one place so maybe she felt ok in a somewhat familiar environment.

I know steroids are risky but she is not a young dog so I would rather maximize her enjoyment than her lifespan. And they seem to think low doses will not be detrimental. I just hope it works. :plead:

Thanks to all of you for your support and caring. It is great to have someplace to share this stuff. :ghug:

The car thing made me chuckle.

Poor Chum. I've been thinking about her many times during every day and all of this makes sense. I'm so glad she's feeling a little better.

Oh, and I feel the same way about steriods and Floof's allergies. At 13, she's already got Boo to deal with, why should she have to deal with the itchiness, too.
I'm glad Chumley is doing better, I hope she can enjoy her trip home. It has made me so happy to see all the pictures with you and your girls, and no matter what happens with Chum in the future I think you should be so happy that you got to take her on such a wonderful trip... she is such a lucky girl!
Val: it is good to hear that Chummie is doing a little bit better. It sure is hard getting old, poor girl. I am sure she enjoyed every pat on the head she received from your visitors. I am sorry you and Chummie had to go through all of this. I hope the rest of your trip is more enjoyable. Thank you for keeping us updated on Chum.
I'm glad Chum is feeling a little better, Val. Please kiss her for us!
I'm glad to hear there is "some" improvement. It just kills me to hear Chum has trouble walking. I can't imagine what goes through their mind ...they must be so confused. I'm glad Chummie seems to be happy.
AWWWWW Val, poor Chummie, poor YOU!!!! What a frustrating time. I hope the remainder of your trip is uneventful!! :ghug:

Having just spent the evening with Elissa and her pack, uneventful is definitely not the word for it. Wild times between Maggie, Pepsi, Rags and Chili. It was all a bit overwhelming for Chum. I need to really limit her activity, but I think I got some pretty great pictures. . . I am really overdue for a roadtrip update.

Confused is exactly right. She definitely does not understand why things aren't working right. But she really is in good spirits. Her attitude is so inspiring.

Definitely she is getting lots of pets and kisses. :hearts:

Thanks for all the support. I know I ask for it alot but it is great that you are all here.

Don't even think that...please! There are times when we are all in need of support. That's what friends are for!

Love you!
