anyone know about RC airplanes?

Hey,

Is anyone familiar with remote control airplanes? Mike wants one for his borthday, but the one he has picked out is $100.00. That is a lot to spend on soemthing I'm not sure won't just sit in the closet for years if he doesn't like it.

Can anyone recommend a good beginner plane for a starting enthusiast? I have a feeling they can be hard to control if you don't know what you are doing.

What he really needs is a new cell phone... but he keeps pouting, and I'm a sucker for the pout!

well, i can look under our guest bed and see which one brian bought and hasnt used...yet... :?
My ex used to be into that, they were an expensive hobby... most people crash them everytime they fly them when they start out and since they're made of balsam wood they are fragile.
Hi Karen,

Why not get him a gift certificate and let him pick one out?
It s a complex hobby--he will need hours of instruction with
a certified trainer. Most of the model airplane club members
are happy to help a new member pick out a plane.
There are electric or gas engines.

He will also need a membership to AMA for insurance
etc......... http://www.modelaircraft.org/

Happy Flying!
My boys have them. I can tell you not to buy the gas operated one because the gasoline cost a fortune. They started out with a samll rechargable battery piper. They have now graduated to a helecopter but can't quite master it.

They have a gas powered RC car but the gas for it is around $20 and mom won't pay for it, Guess they have to master the helecopter
See this is what I was afraid, a new expensive hobby with expensive toys and supplies that have the ability to get wrecked the first time he uses it!!!! Oh heavens!!! Can't he just stick to the video games????
My Dad was into RC planes YEARS ago, I remember my Mom always complaining about the cost. But he LOVED it, he made his own planes and spent HOURS flying them. I agree with Joan, get him a gift cert to the appropriate store and let him play away!!!
