glass in my son's foot

Can anyone help here? My son knocked down a ceramic
pumpkin while climbing for chocolate. When he jumped
down after the pumpkin smashed he must have landed
right on a sliver of it. I can't get him to be still and just
looking at it he is screaming at the top of his lungs. I tried
letting him soak in the tub thinking it may come out on
it's own, but no luck.

Any suggestions? I'm about ready to try anything.

He HAS to be still so you can have a look. In desparation I would give him some cough syrup to make him a bit groggy, and put ice on the foot (wrapped up in a tea towel or sock) to numb it. Then with a groggy child that can't feel it you might have a better chance of looking at it.

If it is not bleeding, can it wait until he is asleep? Do you have a magnifying glass so you can find it?
Lightly run your finger tip across his foot to find the sliver of glass. Then use a pair of tweezers to pull it out. If you can't feel it then definitely use a magnifying glass under a good light to see it.
Thanks for the replies. He did fall asleep and we got some of it out,
but there is a piece in even deeper. I think it actually broke inside
his foot. He starts waking up every time we go after that piece.
I guess this one is just going to have to work itself out..
I can't even put drawing salve on it because of where it is, no
bandaid will stay on.

So nice to have somewhere to go when I am in a jam. I didn't even
call one of my sisters - that's saying a lot!

My friend Mary (the same one with the foster cats) just did that a few weeks ago. She stepped on a broken ornamental light while getting out of her hot tub. She went to the podiatrist after soaking it the 1st day. He needed to dig in there and get more glass out. She had sutures, just got them out. There is still one small piece working it's way out. She was instructed NOT to soak it. We thought that was odd, we both are nurses and she used to do foot clinics for the elderly.
I hope your son is feeling better :D .
Now that I know there is a piece in there deep, I'm not gonna
soak it. I think when the skin gets puffy from the water it
actually can push it in deeper. Anyway... we'll see what
tomorrow brings.

Hey, How's your sons foot this morning? Wrere you able to get the last bit of glass out? Or are you going to take him to the Dr to have it extracted?
Glass in a cut can be very dangerous, you need to have him evaluated byt the Dr. ASAP!!!
I would say doctor too. Hershey is nice this time of year!!!
Hi Shelly,

Sorry to hear about the mishap with your son. Any luck with getting it out?

Marianne and the boys
Well, at about 4:30 this morning I finally got most of it out.
He was sound asleep, and I was able to get in there with
some sharp instruments and open it enough to see it. I
knew if I waited till he was awake he'd carry on and I'd
have ended up at the Dr. (which I avoid like the plague)
I rinsed and rinsed and washed and washed and put some
antbiotic cream on there and left it open till he woke up.
The first thing he said this morning was, "Mama, booboo
all better!" He's walking on it just fine and says it doesn't
hurt, but I'll keep and eye on it for a few days just in case.

Thanks for the replies everyone! It's really hard to reason
with a rutchy 3 yr old.

IF it's warm, pink, or develops pus or you see red lines radiating from it, that would mean a trip to the doctor.

Don't make me have to come over there!!!! :P

Mandy and I are Emt's and I am a nurse so by our very nature we are alarmists. BUT........ I can't even begin to tell you how many terrible nasty wounds I have seen in the ER becasue people "thought" they got it all. WATCH it carefully, it only takes a teeny tiny microscopic piece of glass to be left to cause a horrendous infection. The glass can also migrate to places it ain't suppose to be!!!!!!!!!
Shellie, why do you avoid the doctor "like the plague"??
I have had horrible experiences with doctors. It would be one
thing if it had been one or even two doctors, but it has
been many more than that. For so many reasons, not to
mention the outrageous cost, I just prefer not to go at all.
Aside from my pregnancies I can count on one hand the times
I have been to the doctor since high school - (and that was a long
time ago)

Lucky for me (knock wood) we hardly ever get sick. Of course
now I am going to get a scorching case of something just for
saying that.

Hope your son continues to feel better. That's too bad that happened.
