Cough Drops

Hi everyone, Chum picked up Kennel cough when the new puppy came home. The vet gave him antibiotics but the cough is still bad a few days later. Never found out what kind of cough suppressant is used for dogs. I have read that human cough drops can be used, like Robitussin. Does anyone have more specific info about what kind of drops to use to suppress the cough a little.

Oooh, that's one that I don't know. Norman had a bad cough and the vet prescribed something strictly for animals but I can't remember what it is. Our vet also gives us human alternatives to whatever they can but I know that nothing OTC was reccommended in his case.

Sorry I can't be of more help but if you find out the answer before anyone else posts, please put it up.
I do know the answer to this one. My older lab got kennel cough from one of my fosters. I have the bottle right here, but it is a prescription(my vet called it in to our pharmacy) hydrocodone/homatropine. one tab every 12 hours. This really helped her sleep. Me too. Good luck! It is terrible the way they cough and hang their head .I thought she had something stuck in her throat!!!!
The only thing that I have run into to suppress the cough, is someone who'se vet advised she give 2 teaspoons of Robitussin DM at nightime.

My dog is also recovering from kennel cough. I was told that it can take up to two weeks to clear, and to go in again if it is getting worse (coughing up something). Because kennel cough can be confused with something else (forgot what).
We got a med for a cough suppressant for our min pin Tazz. Let me go get the bottle........

Ok, it's called torb_gesic - the missing letter looks like a vowel, either an o or an e. My directions are: 5mg. take 1/2 tab every 6 to 12 hrs. Use up to 4 days if needed. May sedate.

This dose was for a 7lb dog, so that part would definitely be off.
It worked real well for Tazz, just used it a couple times when the coughing was more frequent and strong.
Just a follow up. We did find a cough suppressant that can be safely used for dogs. It's called DELSYM and it is non drowsy and alcohol free. We spoke with the pharmacist who happened to be familiar with coughing in dogs and he suggested one tableshpoon twice a day. The active ingredient is Dextromethorphan. It seemed to help give Chum some relief, although he is still coughing much of the night.

Hey, that's the stuff that I use for me! For all the old timers, it's that kind of gritty, orangey tasting stuff. My doctor uses it too and loves it because he can work without getting that foggy feeling.

Good info, thanks!!!!
Awww... poor baby... I hope he feels better soon. Does the puppy have it also?
The puppy was coughing last night but seems to be free of it for the most part. Not sure about oldtimers.....not yet at least. The breeder recommended this suppressant and then the pharmacist just happened to be familiar and recommended a dosage. He suggested at least twice the adult dosage for a big dog. Although Chum is not happy about opening up his mouth to the stuff. Half of it winds up on his beard. He gets some relief from coughing for a few hours, at least.

When we have to give dogs liquid like that we pour it on a piece of bread. Bread absorbs the liquid and the dogs just gobble it down.
You have to be careful with cough suppresants too, if there is no coughing, any mucous that builds up in the lungs can turn into pneumonia.
Poor baby
I know it sounds awful and does wake you up at night, but realize if it is just one of the many different coughs, the pup will get better soon. Glacier went thru this a few months back........and suddenly one night I realized I didn't wake up to her cough! It was wonderful. I hope it happens soon for you.
I didn't get any sleep last night because of the nw dogs cough. Thank you guys so much for poting that thing about deslym.......she's feeling beter now.
