Long Hair - Which side of the comb to use, and how often?

For those who have/have had their dog in a long coat, how often should I be using the wide tooth part of the comb, and how often the narrower side?

The comb I have is like (A) on this link.

if you want to have a good long coat
on you dog, you NEVER use a comb :!:

When you use a comb you take all the undercoat out
and that is wrong. You can use a good pin btuch
So if you weren't going to show, but wanted a longer coat that was more managable, it would be OK? (as an alternative to clipping the dog down).
oh, I'm so confused now. I got the comb because of the board, and every groomer she has been to has said to use the comb I have. So I should get a pin brush instead (which I own as well)? I assume the one w/o the ball tip?
When I had Carl in long, not show, coat I used a comb on him. You need to be very careful about breaking the coat. That will cause it to look and lay funny and it'll cause you to get more matts.
Cause more mats?!!! Definitely don't want that.

Her coat right now is terrible since she scratched off most of her hair in various places. :( It had also been stripped because we were leaving her in a kennel for a week.
Straight pin brush is a definite. :D
Stay on top of all those spots where hair is growing out. All those little hairs that airs growing out next to the longer hairs will get caught up in each other and make knots. Just learned that last weekend!!! It's one of the reason the puppy coat blowout is so tough too. While they are getting rid of all that old dead coat, they are also pushing out new guard hairs and it's just a big mess, similar with growing out rough spots.
I have two non-show Sheepies in long coats. Well, one long coat and one medium coat. It is also hot in our area, so I remove the undercoat.
I have a rake and a pin brush, which are rarely used.
I used the the narrow side of the comb, working on small sections at a time. I do remove the undercoat.
My girls do not have a fluffy coat appropriate for show, but it is gorgeous IMO.
If you want a nice fluffy healthy coat just use the pin brush, I only use a comb for mat removal, and for the feet.
