Sigh... Frustrations with Yuki Itching & bumps on skin?

I asked to get an allergy test last time and the doctor said they like to avoid that ...and wait as a last resort, so I accepted that answer. Partly because I can't imagine the cost since it's in a specialty clinic (being seen is $100 on top of the $300 test).

Well her eyes are SO swollen right now. She just formed some bumps under her skin. They are NOT visable. No redness around these bumps. I only know they are there when I feel her skin. They're in the same area. Each the size of ....a big pimple you're able to get but is still under the skin.

She is so restless. I have her back on benadryll because I know that's the only thing the doctor would do for her if I take her to the emergency clinic right now. I know because I have before for the same thing.

Last time she went to the clinic (this week), they said her skin looked great ...except for one tiny tiny tinnnnny scab (size of a tick) she had from scratching herself ...which was already in the process of coming off because it had healed.

Their next appt isn't until Monday at 8:30 a.m., but hopefully I can get in tomorrow. She looks miserable.

If anyone has any idea to what the bumps are... I'd appreciate the info.

So sorry to hear Yuki is going through all this, hard to say what is causing it without actually seeing it. Few things, have you flea/tick treated her recently and is she up to date with that?

What season is it where you are living, any new bloom or grasses growing that might cause an allergic reaction for her?

Also might even pay you to have a blood thyroid test done and see how the levels are, just to rule out any problems there that might be causing these skin/itching problems.

Hugs to Yuki, she must be feeling so uncomfortable at the moment.

It might even pay you to wash her all over in an oatmeal based shampoo, so if anything to do with pollens etc then that gets it out of her coat, the oatmeal is soothing as well to sore itchy skin.

Poor sweetie, hope the vet can find a solution to help ease her a bit. :hearts:
Poor Yuki!!

Is the Benadryl helping at all?
There are no ticks or fleas here ...thankfully! It's fall ...borderline winter here. Last night was in the 30s, and the hi's are in the 40s.

I feel SO bad for her because she looks so miserable. It DOES appear that the benadryl ...sort of works. She seems calmer after she takes it. She seems to drink a lot more which I mentioned before, but the vet doesn't think it is from the benadryl.

She won't pee like normal either. Well... normally when she goes out, she immediately ...goes. Now I have to shove her out of the door 20+ times before she goes, and when she does, it's almost forced because I made her go.

It's 5:32 a.m. my time... I got up early in hopes there are some cancellations, so the vet can squeeze me in. Her eyes look so bad. They calm down when she's sleeping but get irritated a few hours later.

So thyroid problems can cause this? I will ask the doctor to check. Just ask for a blood thyroid check?
Poor Yuki! I hope the Benadryl helps enough until you can get her to the vet on Monday.
Poor Yuki and Jo. I hope you can get into the vet.
Do you think she may be getting them from stress? - with dad leaving and a different feel to the family? The changes may be enough to trigger an outbreak, especially if Yuki is prone to allergy problems anyway. The oatmeal bath and benedryl are good things to be trying until you can get her in. Good luck.
I got in at 2:30 today, but I don't feel any better about Yuki. I can see it play out now...

me: (explains situation for the 100th time)

vet: hmm, what are you feeding her?

me: well, we've tried science diet, iams, nutro, natural balance, some holistic brand, and now we're on pro plan sensitive skin and allergies (or whatever it's called)

vet: you need to stay on each brand for at least 60 days (last visit, they said 3 months).

me: duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. you've told me that 100 times. any other suggestions?

vet: benadryl?

me: what else can I do or could be the cause of it?

vet: her skin looks great. i can tell she's itchy. her paws and ears look good. nope.. no other thoughts. pay me at the counter.

So hopefully this time I can get a dang referrel to see a dermatologist. I'm sick of this run around ..take my money crap.

excuse the frustration. i feel terrible i can't help my baby dog.

Do you think she may be getting them from stress?

possibly, but i doubt it. this has been ongoing for some time. although the last time i posted that she had a red eye was when my husband was also gone in the field.

she also did a first the past two nights. she ran away when i took her outside for her 4a.m. potty. she's a tagalong. has never gone far from eyesight, but it's like she went looking for her daddy.

even with the stress, i still think there's a deeper issue other than mommy isn't her favorite on the list of folks in the house. those honors go to daddy, the little dog, the cats, then me, and then lil J (although most accepting of him..still would probably prefer him not pulling on her hair all the time  )
I have always been #2 out of 2 on my dog's "favorite people in the house" list.

It's a sad thing but sometimes it can be a blessing

I think there's a thing that byi odgs gravitate to women and girl dogs gravitate towards men. I'm going to start another thread on that topic right now.
S hould I give Yuki a puppy cut? I don't want to cut her hair, but I'm asking ...in case it will make her feel any better?

I don't come her much because she's lost so much hair that it just isn't matting. She's not flaking or anything. She recently was groomed w/allergy sensitive shampoo (groomers), so I know she isn't dirty.

I just want to make sure I'm not making her skin problem worse ...somehow?
I feel your pain, and your "predicted" converstion at the vet's sounds very familiar. The allergy tests are often inconclusive, and my vet doesn't really put a lot of faith into them.

It is not the brand of food that would impact the allergies, but the ingredients. And I would think that 6 weeks to 2 months would be long enough to see a diference. But that also means NO other treats....no meat, no cheese, no bread, no milkbones...nothing...scale ehr food down to the bare bones of something...then you would gradually introduce something else.

It could also be grass. pollen, dust, mold, anything in the environemnt, some soap you use, a woolen carpet, the plastic water dish....it is very frustrating for vets to deal with because the answers are not right there for the picking...And many are seasonal.

We have pretty well resolved to keeping an eye on the bumps on Dixie. She must have about 20/30 on her at any one time, in various stages of under the skin, open, itchy, not itchy etc. It has been suggested that long grass could be a problem, but we go to dog parks, and she loves that, so we are NOT going to stop her from enjoying being a dog.

If we fed her whatever she wanted, and didn't give her benedryl, and she wasn't on thyroid meds I'm sure she would be a mess. We have her at a good stable level, not perfect, but she is comfortable and enjoying life.

Perhaps not the news you were hoping for, but Yuki may just be a dog with allergies that you will have to manage throughout her life. Many folks do it, and it is not the funnest thing, but it could be worse.

I hope it is not the case, though. Keep us up to date.
Allergies are VERY frustrating. I've been giving Tasker shots for over a year now. His worst allergy time is the fall, and supposedly r/t fleas (which I never see any and he is treated year round). I had hoped that after a year of shots he would show a drastic improvement this fall.

But like clockwork September rolled around and so did the scratching, now he's a mess.

We use benedryl without alot of relief. I also use an oatmeal shampoo and a hydrocortisone lotion that is left on. When it gets too bad we go in for a steroid shot.

I think there is ALOT they don't know about dogs and allergies.

POOR YUKI!!!!!
Any chance you could change vets?

Poor Yuki, can you maybe put a damp cold washcloth on her eyes. Maybe that will give her some relief.

Sorry, hope you get some help soon!
I have to admit that it does make me feel better hearing about everyone else's struggle. Because...it REALLY is frustrating.

AN ANSWER ...maybe.

So we're going through the dialog I posted above, but this vet (new one) actually knew something about OES'!!!! I started to think it wasn't possible!!!!!!!

We decided to put her on Amoxi (1000 mg) tw0 capsules twice a day.
Tavist (1.36 mg) every 12 hours.+

Combined with a medicated food (Purinea HA) ...which she thought was better than their Science Diet formula for allergies. Basically each ingredient is so tiny that the stomach/intestine? can't detect it ...and it passes through.

THEN RIGHT BEFORE WE LEFT....

I noticed a little thing on her that looked like a scab about to fall off. I had noticed it before, but shrugged it off.

LISAOES ...you were right!!! IT MAY BE A BUG!!

The vet got all crazy... jumping up and down like a school girl. This, by the way, made me like her even more. Made me feel so good that she loved dogs, medicine, and helping ME/Yuki so much. She immediately put it under a microscope and said it was Sucking Lice (Anoplura Linognathus Setosus) which she probably got from the groomers, kennel, or interacting with other dogs on the weekend.

She said we don't have ticks or fleas like the lower 48, but northern states have either sucking or chewing lice.

This is enough to make her entire body react/itch.

This doesn't mean she doesn't have a food allergy, but it could mean it's made the food allergy 100 times worse. So we're not switching foods yet... just the medicine.

I'm so glad to hear SOME SORT OF ANSWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YAY :)
I forgot to mention that I also got a full panel done. Hopefully that comes out okay. Although I keep thinking I want to find "something" (treatable) so we don't have to keep guessing...
Yup, I believe it!! My Vet told me that Tasker is so allergic to fleas that one flea, jumping on biting him, and jumping off is enough to set off a chain reaction that results in MONTHS of itching. Hard to believe that somethign sooooo small could be such a problem.

He told me way back in the begining that it was fleas and I kept insisting that it couldn't be because "my children didn't have fleas". He explained that even when treated, dogs that are outside can pick up a flea from the ground, it bites and leave and there you have it.

Let us know how Yukki does.
Zak really had horrible allergies, so bad that his entire body had become scabbed from scratching. There was not an inch of him not broken out. I tried everything to relieve his scratching and nothing worked.
That is when my vet recommended the atopica, I spoke of in my post.
One month later... no itching, no scratchng, skin cleared up. It's like a different dog. I would mention it to your vet. You can order it online.
Mark
Wow - I hope Yuki feels better fast! What can you do to kill this bug?
I should have mentioned it. She is on Frontline for two months. My maltese is allergic to it (her skin bleeds when it's applied), so she gets a flea bath once a week for 3 weeks ...even though we didn't see any on her.

cinemarco, I'm so glad you were able to find a solution too. I planned on mentioning your situation if the vet didn't tell me something hopeful.
Poor Yuki!!
I'm so glad that at least now you have a direction to go with her treatment and a probable cause. That's helpful. How's she doing today?
Wow! Sounds like you found yourself a terrific vet and hopefully an answer to Yuki's allergy issues. Stupid bugs
New vet sounds great! Hopefully the panel comes back fine and maybe the bug was the only problem?

Keep us posted :)
Vet called this morning to check up on Yuki and tell me the results of her bloodwork.

Cholesterol and ALT was normal which she said if there is a problem with the thyroid, sometimes these levels are elevated.

CDC was normal. Said there was some "word I don't know" in there, which basically meant her body was trying to fight off something. She suspects the lice.

Thyroid was good too.

That's great news. I just hope this solves everything because I don't want to deal with food allergies now!!!
Oh, her eyes are still very red, but I'm a bad mommy and haven't picked up one of her medications (over the counter). Well, I tried at two places and they do not carry the stuff.

I will go today despite the wind gusts of 75 mph we're having. :grunts:

However, her itching seems to have calmed a little down. She's not ticklish all over anymore which is what was driving me ...and her the most crazy. She's still has some sensitive areas, but it's gradually going away ...it seems.
Well that's nice. I just made another trip to the store and the pharmacist said they haven't had tavist for several months, so she's not sure if they're carrying it anymore. Guess Yuki will have to go w/o it until the vet has a substitution for me.

joah
Great news all her bloodwork came back with a positive results, keeping finger and paws crossed for you that it is those blasted lice that have been causing the problems and all will settle down now.
