Wedding attire-What to wear to an evening wedding in Miami?

What should I wear to an evening wedding in Miami in early November? I want to buy a new dress, but to make it worthwhile I kind of want it to last through the holiday season as my holiday dress, but since the wedding is in Miami, it seems like it should be brighter than a holiday dress should be...

And any ideas as to where I can look for this dress?

I love JCrew's dresses - fall/winter style but with summery colors.. You should check it out. (jcrew.com)
Remember the temps are still in the mid 80's at that time. Maybe look through the end of summer sales for the wedding and then get yourself a nice "warmer" dress for the holidays.
Steph -you can wear typical holiday dress colors to the wedding. Black, silver, navy, burgundy. But, it will be warm, so get the wrap for when you wear it in VA. :D
If your not part of the wedding party, color shouldn't matter, with the exception of white (bridal color).

Evening weddings are considered formal attire, so you'd be safe choosing something for holiday events.

I always found the evenings in Florida a little chilly, so if you're like me that would be a plus on buying the dress for both occassions.

I think its more important to get something we like, that's comfortable and we feel good wearing. We can spend the evening saying "thank you" when someone compliments us and look forward to wearing it again.

I wasn't concerned about the color for that purpose, just more of the idea of being in a tropical setting and feeling like I should wear something more suited to the geography (not saying I should wear a flower-print dress or anything) just something brighter than I might wear in November back home.

Hmmm, so many choices! :D
Red will work....Jcrew does have some beautiful stuff out...so does Ann Taylor!!! What about a black and white dress?
You can't go wrong with a black and white, especially some sort of print. Then you can accessorize and layer it up at home if it's cold, but go bare in Miami.

Actually, that dress that Darcy wore to the flip flop wedding would be great for a Miami wedding. Send that to her, Darcy. You guys are the same size!
Just please don't wear ALL BLACK. "Back in the day" it was considered bad luck to wear black to a wedding, then styles changed and black became "the" color to wear. Last summer when my son got married my DIL had printed ont the reception response card "Ladies, no black dresses please". I thought she was nuts and put up with alot of grief from friends and family.

But no one wore black and her wedding was lovely. Later looking at the photos of the wedding it made perfect sense. There was lots of color and they were lovely.

Recently I attended an evening wedding and noticed both in the church and at the reception how drab and dreary it all looked, from the people you really couldn't tell if it was a wedding or funeral, a great many of the women had on black. It isn't something I would have ever taken notice of until my son got married.

At the right occasion black is lovely and elegant but I think for a wedding you should try to wear color.
Ill send you my dress steph if you want.....its a size 3ish...dont ask...
hmmm, that might not be a bad idea. I love that dress. You looked hot--maybe it'll rub off on me!
Steph I also have a GEORGEOUS fucshia silk Ann Taylor dress...it has cap sleeves square neck and comes to right above the knee, it is a little conservative, but well fitted...I had it taken in....With a cool and I mean cool pair of sling back pumps and a chunky necklace, its a hot out fit...in fact I wore it to my brothers wedding.....Id lend you the shoes too, but I borrowed those from my mom....they were gold, hot pink and teal 3'' shantung silk slingbacks.....sigh, I want those shoes, but she wont give them up.....but the dress is yours if you want to borrow it!!
Sorry but the flip flop concept is way overrated. Miami is light hearted, but an evening wedding is nothing to sneeze at here, and the sequin and rhinestones come out afte 12 noon, just so you know!!! I wouldn't wear brown taffeta but I certainlu wouldn't underestimate November down here. Think layers in fall colors and silky fabrics... Keep the Summery atire for the resorts.

Just so everyone knows...

2 1/2 years ago, I chose a really pretty strapless cocktail-length raw silk chocolate dress with a little black beading on the top. It was a perfect choice for the wedding. 8)

I don't know where it was. It was really pretty, though. And right on the water, somewhere, lol. We stayed in South Beach but they chartered a bus for us from the hotels, so I had no idea where we went

It was 2+ years ago. 8)
