Bingley has giardia :-(

Ian had to go to a conference out of town this week so I got up at 4 in the morning to drive him to the airport. After school (4:15) I came home to find a note from our friend who let Bingley out at lunch: Stool VERY loose. I brought Bing outside and he immediately strained to produce almost straight liquid stool. He also wasn't acting as jumpy as normal, even though he'd been alone most of the day. I brought him back inside and about 30 seconds later I caught him starting to go inside. We got him out in time and more liquid.

So I called the vet, brought him in, and they gave him an intestinal parasite check, which showed no parasites but the organism giardia - which is of course contagious to all mammals.

Last night he played at the neighbor's. She has a little kiddie pool she keeps full for her dog. I emptied it out as I didn't want him to drink the water and I think he must have gotten it on his paws and licked them or just played with the grass that got wet.

I feel bad for my little bugger. To be sick anytime isn't fun, but especially when his schedule is already messed up with 'dad' gone. This week will be interesting . . .

I'm so sorry, Emily. Hugs to you and Bing!
Poor Bingley and Emily!
I hope he's feeling better soon.
Awww.... hope he feels better fast!
Giardia is horrible! I am so sorry your Bingley has this. Luckily, it is treatable. But just FYI, it took my girls two courses of ten days of worth of antibiotics and then I had to follow up with a probiotic (Tylan Powder) to rebalance their system. It is something that looks like it goes away but then comes right back. Be prepared with lots of rags for washing butt. Also, mine did much better on a low residue intestinal diet than they did on rice and chicken. I think we used Eukanuba. The downside was it made them itchy so next time I would try a different brand. You might want to ask your vet about that too.
Hugs Emily and Bingley, it is an ordeal with giardia. Val is right too, make sure you get a 2nd course of tablets to help clear it up. I had to too and when I thought it was gone, squirt it came back again 8O

2 Courses to clear it up, special diet, probiotic supplement to help settle all down.

Make sure also where bingley has been, to throw bleach and water on that area to keep the bug at bay.

Hoping all will clear up soon, Kelsey had it as a youngster, caught it at a dog show up the country, wet muddy conditions. Then she gave it to peppa 3 days later. Took awhile to clear up the girls, so you have my sympathy HUGS. :(
Poor Bingley! Poor Emily! I hope he's feeling better soon!
hope bingley's feeling much better. I know it is horrible when they are feeling ill.
Poor Bingley and MOM,

Hope he gets better soon. Hugs from Hannah and Copper and me too.
Aww... poor sheepie baby.. hope he feels better soon.
Feel better Bingley!!

Remember boiled rice and pumpkin work well to firm the stools.
I am so sorry to hear that Bingley is ill. I hope he feels better soon.
I home Bingly feels better soon and that your carpet survives!
Poor Bingley...Barney says get better soon!
Thank you so much for all the well-wishes! I am staying home half of today and half of tomorrow to help him feel better. He seems more like himself today and actually had a solid poop! :excited: He's on metronidazole twice a day for one week for the giardia and carafate 3 times a day for three days to help with the diarrhea. He loves the pills. Today I put the carafate in a little piece of hot dog to give it to him. He ate the hot dog up, spit out the pill as I expected, but then chased the pill around the floor and ate that up, too. :phew:  I'm keeping the yard very picked up as hot sun kills the organism. And I'm attacking the inside of the house in a few minutes . . . 8O Thanks again - there is so much support here!
I'm so sorry. We know how much that sucks! It took Clyde almost a full month of meds to get clean, too, so we had many butt washings and "mishaps" around the house. Yuck! Feel better soon, Bingley!

Have you brought your puppy to the vet? What kind of bug does he have? How old is he again?
Emily, you have my deepest sympathy. It's hard enough to be potty training and if you add this in.... Hope he gets better soon.
:( I'm so sorry for Bingly, hope he will feel bether soon.
Hugs to you and Bing!

Ewwww - yucky. I'm so sorry. You're keeping them away from outside water and cleaning their bums, right? It's SOOOOOO hard - yucky little organism. I try to encourage Bingley to never poop in the same space since he's had this. I clean it up immediately and hope for the sun to come out and kill the remainder yuckies. Good luck. It would be VERY hard with three!
