DOG ALLERGIES

:?: I'M NOT SURE IF THIS IS THE SECTION TO POST MY QUESTION.... BUT MY HUSBAND FOR OUR WEDDING IN MARCH BROUGHT ME THE MOST GORGEOUS OLD ENGLISH SHEEPDOG NAMED BING. HE WAS 1 YEAR OLD AND THE PREVIOUS OWNER DID NOT REALLY LOOK AFTER HIM... HE IS NOW BEING SPOILED LIKE A KING!!!!

MY ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT IN THE LAST 2-3 MONTHS MY HUSBAND HAS DEVELOPED AN ALLERGY TO BING (AND WE ARE 110% SURE IT IS OUR BABY). HE FINDS IT VERY HARD TO BREATH AND HE FEELS AS THOUGH HIS CHEST IS CONSTRICTED.

BEFORE MY HUSBAND BROUGHT THE DOG WE HAD BOTH DID A HEAP OF RESEARCH AND I DID READ SOMEWHERE THAT THEY ARE AN ALLERY FREE DOG BECAUSE THEIR HAIR IS NOT FUR IT'S WOOL AND THEY DON'T SHED AS MUCH HAIR AS A NORMAL DOG.

HAS ANYBODY ELSE ENCOUTERED THIS PROBLEM... ???? AND IF SO HAVE THEY FOUND A SOLUTION WITHOUT GIVING THEIR PUPPY AWAY AS I LOVE HIM TOO MUCH AND I COULDN'T BEAR TO SEE HIM GO!!!! :( :?:

PLEASE HELP!!!! [/b]

Hello and welcome to he forum! There's another member on our forum who has a "Bingley" puppy :D There are several discussions on here with reference to this topic but sometimes it's hard to find with the search as we all chat on here so frequently.

I really don't think that there is such a thing as an allergy free dog. Althoug OES shed very little, they do have some doggie dander, doggie saliva, bring the envionment into the home. This is often what people might be allergic to. We have major allergies in our house, but manage to have two sheepies. These are a few things that we do to minimize our allergic reactions:

1. Frequent baths and grooming
2. Keep their hair short (puppy cut)
3. Wipe feet and fur down before re-entering the house
4. Avoid doggie kisses. My husband turns away from kisses as the saliva is what bothers irritates his skin.

I'm the one with the major enironmental allergies so 1-3 is important for me. Once you determine what is the specific irritant that sets off your husband's allergies, he may also want to consider allergy injections. Anythingn to be able to keep your beloved baby. Keep us posted :D

Oh yea...please post pictures!!!
THANKS FOR THAT ..... IT MAKES MY HUSBAND FEEL ALOT BETTER, THAT HE'S NOT THE ONLY ONE!

I HAVE SUGGESTED THAT HE LOOK INTO THE INJECTIONS. WHEN HE DID THE DOCTOR HAS TOLD HIM THAT THEY DON'T REALLY WORK! AND BEING A MALE HE REFUSES TO GET A SECOND OPINION.

AT THE MOMENT BINGS HAIR IS SHORT EXCEPT FOR HIS HEAD AND HIS TAIL BUT I THING THEY WILL SOON HAVE TO BE CUT AS WELL.

I WILL POST A PHOTO LATER ON THIS WEEK!!!! :D
Welcome to the forum! Sorry your first post is under less than ideal circumstances.

Perhaps a trip to the allergist would help?!?

Believe it or not, "hair" and "fur" are the same thing.. I also had believe that was the difference with the OES, but it's not. OES just don't have a shedding season (after blowing out the puppy coat).

While OES don't shed, they DO have saliva, and it's my lay understanding that it's frequently the dog's saliva that causes the allergic reaction.

Some people have found wonderful relief through chemical (drug) intervention, they have found an allergy drug that allows them to continue to own their sheepie. I'd definitely make an appointment with an allergist.

I hope that the others on the forum who have had this problem and can hop in and offer their advice.
I see Stacy beat me to it! :D

I need to learn to type faster!
Find your husband another doctor also. While the injections don't work for everyone, they are wonderful for the people they do work on. They help my asthma (which is what your husband sounds like he has), but not my sinuses. There are also many non-sedating allergy medications out there that could help your husband.
I am allergic to trees, grasses, weeds, pollens and mold - so basically everything except dogs and cats. When the dogs are outside for a longtime collecting my allergans, I have a rough time. So they get a quick shower.
BTW, I've had asthma since birth and sheepies for 30 years.
HI.....

I HAVE MADE PAUL BOOK IN FOR HIS ALLERGY INJECTIONS. HE WON'T GO SEE ANOTHER DOCTOR BUT AS LONG AS HE IS DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT, IT MAKES ME FEEL ALOT BETTER :D .

I CAN'T FIND MY USB CORD TO LOAD MY PHOTO OF BING ON THE COMPUTER, BUT I WILL DEFINATELY POST ONE LATER ON THIS WEEK!

THANKS FOR YOUR SUGGESTIONS.... VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!!!!! :D :hearts:
And if your husband DOES start the allergy injections, please be sure to give them time to work. I have horrible allergies, to just about everything, and I started allergy shots and I thought they didn't work either...took a good 8 or 9 months to see a difference, and then, WOW--it was like, how did I ever live before?!
Good luck!
 HI ALL,

UNFORTUNATELY THIS COULD BE MY LAST POST AS AN OLD ENGLISH SHEEPDOG MOTHER!

ON THE WEEKEND, MY HUSBAND GOT SO BAD WITH HIS ALLERGY... TO THE POINT WHERE HE COULD NOT BREATH!!! HE WENT TO SEE A DOCTOR FOR A REFERRAL TO AN ALLERGIST YESTERDAY. THE DOCTOR ADVISED THE COST AND TIME INVOLVED, NOT TO MENTION THAT OUR BABY WILL HAVE TO BE SENT AWAY FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS. THE ONLY PLACE THAT WE WOULD BE ABLE TO SEND HIM WOULD BE TO A KENNELL..... FINANCIALLY MY HUSBAND AND I JUST CAN'T AFFORD THE COSTS INVOLVED.

I WILL BE SO SAD TO SEE HIM GO.... I JUST HOPE THAT HIS NEW FAMILY WILL TREAT HIM WITH AS MUCH CARE AND LOVE AS WE HAVE.
I am so sorry for you all, if you have to surrender him, please make sure it is through an OES resuce Organisation where they can find a loving, appropriate home. There is plenty of people here that can help you if need to re-house your Sheepie.

So hard when the allergy is so bad :(
I am so sorry to hear you will need to re home your sheepie but in the interest of your husband's health we all understand.

Please contact the nearest OES Rescue to you and have them help with the rehoming of your sheepie. This will ensure that your baby goes to a very good home that is prepared to take care of him the way that you have.
HI...

I'VE SPOKEN TO DENISE AT THE VIC OES ORG. AND I'M SURE SHE WILL FIND AN APPROPRIATE HOME FOR HIM.

DEEP DOWN, I JUST WISH THERE WAS SOMETHING MORE I COULD DO.

MY EYES ARE SO SORE FROM CRYING ALL WEEKEND... HE'S MY BABY, I KNOW THAT I'LL NEVER FIND ANOTHER GEORGEOUSE SOUL LIKE BINGS. HE ALWAYS MADE ME LAUGH!!! AND I THINK BING KNOWS THERE IS SOMETHING HAPPENING, BECAUSE HE HAS BEEN REALLY MOPEY THE LAST COUPLE OF DAYS.
I am from Victoria too, Know Denise very well, am a club member.

My heart goes out to you. Denise will find a wonderful caring, loving home, she is a lovely caring lady :D I know it is a hard decision and I know your heart is breaking, I really am so sad for you.

(((Hugs)))
I'm so sorry this has turned out this way for your family and your oes :(
I am so sorry that you had to give your Bing up. Thank goodness rescue is there to help out. I adopted my basset Simon. He was a well loved dog, and well trained and socialized. They had kids, and the kids had severe allergies. They placed Simon with Basset rescue, knowing applicants would be screened and the best dog/human match made. I've had Simon for a little over a year, and he is great. I am grateful every day that his family placed him with rescue, so I could adopt him. I know I'm lucky to have him, and he is lucky to have 2 families that love him.
Hello, everyone,

I have just posted a message earlier and found this message.

Is there any place we can consult? After we have done the allergy test, we were advised not to take a dog. And we discussed something as follows. My son and I are allergic to cat while we have a cat at home. However, my son has never been allergic to our cat. What we were told was that we would raise resistance to our own pet while we took it from kitten and so could be the case for dog. Any suggestions?
Meet an oes first, rub your face in their coat and see if you react. If your doctor advised you not to get a dog, you probably shouldnt. No offense but your story may end up like this one.
